Draft Scouting Report
Kyle Monangai is a compact, thickly-built running back with an urgent running style and impressive lower body flexibility. He can quickly change direction with short, explosive bursts, particularly when hitting cutbacks. While he runs with the ball high and tight, he could benefit from lowering his pad level more consistently to reduce vulnerability to big hits. He often stops his momentum to make defenders miss or cut back, but this approach may not be as effective in the NFL with faster defenders.
Monangai shows solid vision, quickly processing new running lanes, and has a natural feel for elusiveness. His agility and wiggle in tight spaces are clear strengths, allowing him to slip past tacklers and pick up extra yards. When he sees a clear path, he transitions to a north-south running style with authority, often powering through contact to gain additional yardage.
Though effective at making defenders miss behind the line, Monangai lacks explosive speed through the second level and in the open field. With minimal receiving experience in college, he’ll need development as a pass-catcher.
Monangai’s skill set combines toughness, agility and the ability to make defenders miss in tight spaces. While he has areas to refine, particularly with pad level and speed, he brings potential as a physical, versatile back who runs hard on every touch.
- 2023-24: Two-time All-Big Ten (first team in 2024 and second team in 2023)
- 2023-24: Ran for 2,541 yards (on more than 5.0 yards per carry) and 21 touchdowns over the past two seasons
- Thickly built with impressive lower-body flexibility, allowing for quick cuts and tight-space elusiveness
- Runs with authority, powering through contact and consistently fighting for extra yards
- Plus vision and makes decisive cutbacks to maximize yardage
- Has average top-end speed, not going to outrun defenders for long gains
- Runs high at times, making him more susceptible to big hits and sapping his contact balance
- Has minimal pass-catching reps in college, will need development as a receiving threat
- 40-yard dash: 4.60 seconds
- Vertical jump: 34-5 inches
- Broad jump: 9 feet, 9 inches

Bears' Kyle Monangai: Part of backfield mix in Chicago
The Bears selected Monangai in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 233rd overall.
Monangai may be a seventh-rounder, but he should still be on the fantasy radar thanks to landing in Chicago. Beyond that, Monangai is a talented, physical runner who took on heavy workloads at Rutgers. He ran for over 1,200 yards each of the last two seasons with at least 240 carries in those campaigns. Monangai offers next to nothing in the passing game with 38 career receptions in four seasons, but his rushing ability could still pave the way to a role in Chicago. Remember, the Bears were a popular projection for Ashton Jeanty in the first round and did not touch that position until they nabbed Monangai. D'Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson sit atop the depth chart for this new coaching staff, but managers should file away Monangai's name as one to watch come training camp.
