2025 John Deere Classic leaderboard: Davis Thompson making repeat bid, Max Homa in front of chasing pack

Moving Day at the 2025 John Deere Classic featured some chaos as there were eight players tied for the lead at one point as gusty winds made it difficult to score. However, as the final groups made their way around TPC Deere Run, five players created some separation from the pack with the reigning champion back atop the field.

Davis Thompson looks to become the first man to go back-to-back at TPC Deere Run since Steve Stricker won the event three consecutive years from 2009-11. Thompson made a couple of scratchy bogeys on the front nine as he hit the turn even on his day, but he found an extra gear on the back side. The 2024 winner went 4 under on his back nine, including consecutive birdies to close out his round to post 67 and take the solo lead at 15 under in his bid.

Behind him is a group of four players who will aim to spoil Thompson's repeat bid. Max Homa is the headliner of that group at 14 under, the six-time PGA Tour winner looking for his first win in more than two years. Homa spent much of the last two seasons searching for the form that made him a rising star, changing just about everything about his game, including his swing, equipment, caddie and clothing. The results have been spotty, but this week we've finally seen Homa enjoying himself on the golf course.

After his first-round 63, Homa pointed to his great play off the tee, and he's carried over that excellent performance with the driver through the third round. Homa is top five in strokes gained off the tee, and when coupled with his always-solid iron play, he's given himself a fantastic chance to get his first win since early 2023. he will hope to get the putter warmed up Sunday, though, as he couldn't make much of anything from distance in windy conditions on Saturday. Either way, Homa finding himself among the final tee times in Round 4 of a golf tournament has got to be a positive feeling.

Joining Homa chasing Thompson are David Lipsky, Emiliano Grillo and Brian Campbell. Both Grillo and Campbell birdied the 18th on Saturday to get into that tie for second, while Lipsky held a share of the lead for most of the day before getting passed by Thompson at the end of the third round. With that flurry to the finish from the final groups, there's a two-shot cushion for the group tied for fifth over the next four on the leaderboard at 12 under.

Last week was a battle of nerves at the Rocket Classic, and we'll see if this group at the top can handle their to keep that distance between themselves and the rest of the field. Thompson should have plenty of confidence having won last year on this same course, and that comfort could prove to be incredibly important. Campbell has a win already this year, Homa is a six-time winner, and Grillo is a two-time winner, leaving Lipsky as the only truly unproven player in that top five.

The leader

1. Davis Thompson (-15): Last year, Thompson shot a final-round 64 as the 54-hole leader to win by four shots. Those chasing him will have to believe he's not going to melt under the pressure of being the leader this year if he handled himself that well a year ago. That said, Thompson may need to replicate that performance if he's going to hoist the big deer trophy again Sunday afternoon. The winds are not supposed to be as big a factor as they were Saturday, and the rain the course will receive this evening should create some incredible scoring conditions for the final round.

Contenders

T2. Max Homa, David Lipsky, Brian Campbell, Emiliano Grillo (-14)
T6. Kurt Kitayama, Austin Eckroat, Seamus Power, Camilo Villegas (-12)
T10. Matt Kuchar, Chris Gotterup, Jackson Koivun, Cameron Champ and Kevin Roy (-11)

Given the scoring conditions that should be out there, it's hard to imagine someone will be able to come from much more than four off the pace to win. Someone in this group ought to go low to apply some pressure to Thompson. Homa showed Thursday that he can be that guy with his opening 63. He's been one of the longest and most accurate players off the tee this week, and if he can cash in a few from 10-15 feet on the greens, he could absolutely chase Thompson down for his seventh career victory.

Kitayama's 66 was the round of the day to vault himself into the mix, but he'll likely need to best that by a shot or two to have a chance Sunday. Champ and Roy were in the lead at various points Saturday but could not close out the round positively and find themselves with lots of work to do if they're going to get in the winner's circle.

2025 John Deere Classic updated odds, picks

Odds via BetMGM

  • Davis Thompson (9/4)
  • Max Homa (9/2)
  • Emiliano Grillo (5-1)
  • Brian Campbell (9-1)
  • David Lipsky (10-1)

Homa will, unquestionably, be the most popular pick going into Sunday, but this feels like Thompson's week to go back-to-back. While Campbell lacks the length off the tee of Thompson and Homa, he's been so steady all week with his iron play and putting that he has some value at 9-1.

Max Homa, David Lipsky tied for the lead at -14

A pair of birdies on the par-5 17th kept Homa and Lipsky in lock step for the day at 3 under on their rounds and 14 under for the tournament. Those two are now one shot clear of Camilo Villegas, Emiliano Grillo and Davis Thompson, with the clubhouse lead still back at 12 under. Homa is looking for his first win of the season and seventh of his career, while Lipsky is looking for his first career win and is trying to secure a Tour card for next season.

Max Homa joins the lead at 13 under

A birdie on the short par-4 14th has Max Homa as part of the 4-way tie for the lead at 13 under. Homa joins Camilo Villegas, Sam Stevens and David Lipsky at that number, one ahead of a 6-way tie for second at 12 under and another five players tied at 11 under. All four leaders are on the 15th hole currently, meaning they'll have four more holes to try and pick up another shot or two on the field to try and get in ahead of the current clubhouse leaders, Kurt Kitayama and Austin Eckroat, who are in at 12 under.

Kevin Roy and David Lipsky break out of the pack to reach 13 under

The co-lead is back to 13 under as Kevin Roy and David Lipsky made birdies at the 14th and 13th holes, respectively, to get out of the logjam at 12 under. The group at 12 under now features nine players, including Max Homa and Kurt Kitayama, the latter being the first to get into the clubhouse at that -12 number. With winds continuing to gust at 20-25 mph and storms set to arrive in the next 90 minutes, we'll see what the rest of the leaderboard can do on their way into the clubhouse -- and if they can get the third round finished before storms get there.

Eight players are now tied for the lead at 12 under

The leaderboard is now chaos a the John Deere Classic, as there are eight players tied for the lead at 12 under after Kevin Roy, Cameron Champ and David Lipsky all stumbled to start their back nine. Roy made back-to-back bogeys from bunkers on the 11th and 12th holes, while Champ also bogeyed No. 12 and Lipsky bogeyed No. 11 after short-siding himself in the bunker. As a result, the lead has dropped back to where it was to start the day at 12 under.

Lipsky, Champ and Roy are all part of the new co-leading pack, along with 2024 champ Davis Thompson, Camilo Villegas, Austin Eckroat, Emiliano Grillo and Brian Campbell. Max Homa was part of that group but he dropped a shot on No. 11 himself and fell back to 11 under, which is just one shot off the lead but only good for T9. In total, there are 15 players within one shot of the lead, including Homa and Matt Kuchar, and we could be in for a wild finish to this third round at TPC Deere Run.

Joel Dahmen holes out for eagle on No. 13

Joel Dahmen got off to a tough start to his Saturday, making three bogeys in his first seven holes, but found a little something from there with birdies on Nos. 8 and 11 before providing the highlight of the round so far with an eagle from the fairway on the 13th.

That moved Dahmen to 2 under on his round and 9 under for the tournament, five shots off Kevin Roy's lead. Dahmen is grinding to keep himself inside the top 100 in the FedEx Cup standings to maintain his status for next season, currently sitting 95th in the points this season. A strong finish this week could improve his standing and help move him closer to securing his status for another year on the PGA Tour, meaning a hole out like this one to climb the leaderboard could prove to be incredibly important.

Another week, another bunched leaderboard on a Saturday

Similar to what we saw in Detroit, no one has been able to separate so far at the John Deere and the result is another congested leaderboard. Kevin Roy remains the leader by one at -14 after starting his round with four consecutive birdies, but since that early flurry most of the leaders have stalled out. As it stands, eight players are within two shots of the lead and 22 players are within four shots of Roy, and with the winds expected to continue picking up, anyone that can get into the clubhouse with a round of 66 or 67 is going to give themselves a great chance to climb the leaderboard.

Kevin Roy, Cameron Champ open -3 thru 3 to take the lead at -13

While the winds are up at TPC Deere Run, there are still plenty of birdies and eagles out there to be had and we've already seen a change at the top of the leaderboard with the leaders just getting their round underway. Doug Ghim opened with a par and is now tied for third with his playing partners Davis Thompson and Brian Campbell, who both opened their third rounds with a birdie at the first.

That trio is chasing Kevin Roy and Cameron Champ, who have gotten out to a red-hot start playing together, with Roy birdieing his first three holes of the day while Champ went eagle-birdie on Nos. 2 and 3 to get to 13 under where they now share the lead by one. Things are already bunching up at the top and there will undoubtedly be more lead changes as the day progresses.

An early start due to storms in the forecast this afternoon

The leaders will be on the course in half an hour as tee times got moved up to threesomes off split tees this morning due to storms that are expected to arrive by 4 p.m. Players have been on course for a little over an hour and the winds are up a bit and will keep getting stronger as the day wears on, making TPC Deere Run play a bit tougher. We'll see how Doug Ghim and the rest of the chasers handle a blustery day that will make it difficult to post the kinds of low scores we are accustomed to seeing at the John Deere. Early on the best round on the course is Zac Blair at -3 thru 6 after starting on the back nine, moving himself 23 spots up the leaderboard to T13.
