Player Outlook
The good news for Jack Flaherty is that he was healthy enough to make 29 appearances (27 starts) and throw 144.1 innings in 2023. That's no small feat for a guy who totaled 26 appearances (23 starts) and 114.1 frames over the previous two seasons combined. The bad news is he never resembled the guy who once looked like a budding ace. To give you an idea of how much Flaherty's stuff has backed up, note that he gave up 27 more hits in 2023 than he did during his stellar 2019 season, and he did so in 52 fewer innings. Flaherty's control has also become a problem, with his 10.2 percent walk rate representing the ninth-highest mark among 76 pitchers with at least 140 innings. The Orioles were intrigued enough by the righty to trade for him at the deadline, but he held a 6.75 ERA for them and was demoted to the bullpen. Detroit gave Flaherty a one-year, $14 million contract over the winter, and the righty will get to pitch in a favorable home park and work with up-and-coming pitching coach Chris Fetter. Flaherty is still young enough (28) to rediscover something, but he'll need to prove it before fantasy managers can trust him again.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Strikes out eight in win

Flaherty (5-4) earned the win against the White Sox on Friday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Flaherty threw four scoreless innings before surrendering a solo home run to Tommy Pham in the fifth. He then allowed a hit and a walk with two outs in the sixth before being pulled just shy of a quality start at 98 pitches. The home run was the first earned run Flaherty has allowed since May 23, and the pitch count was encouraging considering he was limited to 73 pitches in his last outing following a back injury. On the season, he owns a 2.92 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 108:13 K:BB over 83.1 innings and tentatively lines up to face the Phillies next week.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Goes five scoreless innings

Flaherty (4-4) earned the win Saturday over the Astros, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out six over five scoreless innings. Flaherty was skipped once through the rotation while he dealt with a back injury, which he received an injection for Monday. He was good in his return, though he was limited to 73 pitches (46 strikes), as the Tigers likely didn't want to risk pushing him too hard after they built up a 10-0 lead. Flaherty is at a 3.01 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 100:11 K:BB through 77.2 innings over 13 starts this season. Assuming he doesn't aggravate the back injury, he is tentatively scheduled to make his next start at home in a favorable matchup versus the White Sox.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Cleared to start Saturday

Flaherty (back) said he's feeling better after receiving a pain-killing injection Tuesday and has been cleared to start Saturday's game against the Astros in Houston, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Flaherty was scheduled to play catch Wednesday and will throw a bullpen session Thursday, but unless the Tigers indicate that his back is still aching coming out of either of those activities, he shouldn't face any restrictions while he slots back into the rotation this weekend. The right-hander has delivered excellent returns on the Tigers' one-year, $14 million investment on him this offseason, as he'll head into Saturday's outing with a 3-4 record, 3.22 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 94:10 K:BB across 72.2 innings through his first 12 starts with Detroit.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Receives injection

Flaherty (back), who received an injection Monday and is scheduled to play catch Wednesday, is expected to start this weekend against the Astros if he remains free of setbacks, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. The 28-year-old exited his start last Tuesday due to back tightness and originally lined up to make his next turn through the rotation Tuesday versus Washington, but his spot has been pushed back a few days. Flaherty's throwing session Wednesday should provide some clarity for his availability this weekend.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Poised for weekend return

Flaherty (back) is expected to make his next start during the Tigers' three-game series in Houston that begins Friday, MLB.com reports. Flaherty was forced out of his most recent start against the Rangers this past Tuesday, when he tossed five scoreless innings before being lifted on account of back tightness. The right-hander downplayed his injury when he addressed the media after the game and said that he expected to make his next start in Tuesday's series opener versus the Nationals, but the Tigers have since elected to err on the side of caution and give Flaherty a few extra days to recover. Detroit will take advantage of Monday's off day to reshuffle the rotation, with Kenta Maeda, Reese Olson and Casey Mize picking up starts Tuesday through Thursday before Flaherty and ace Tarik Skubal start the first two games of the series in Houston in some order. Though Flaherty looks like he won't be operating under any restrictions against the Astros after playing catch Friday and throwing a bullpen session Sunday without issue, the change in the pitching order means that he'll miss out on a two-start week.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Shouldn't miss next start

Flaherty (back) said he expects to make his next start, which is scheduled for Tuesday against Washington, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Flaherty was pulled after 60 pitches in his last start due to back tightness, but it seems as though he's avoided any significant injury and is all but confirmed to face the Nationals. Considering back injuries can be touch and go, there remains a small risk that the issue will flare up again. Flaherty will look to extend his scoreless innings streak Tuesday, which stands at 11.2 innings.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Exits early Tuesday

Flaherty was removed from Tuesday's game against the Rangers due to back tightness, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Flaherty had cruised through five shutout innings and thrown just 60 pitches before being suddenly pulled from the game. Manager A.J. Hinch said after the contest that the team still does not know the severity of the right-hander's injury, but the Tigers will presumably continue to run tests on his back and have an update on his status within the next couple of days.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Allows just one hit in victory

Flaherty (2-4) earned the win over Boston on Thursday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out nine batters over 6.2 scoreless innings. Flaherty was at his best Thursday, racking up 15 swinging strikes and tying his season high with 6.2 frames. The right-hander struck out exactly nine batters for the third straight contest and recorded his sixth consecutive quality start. Though the win was just his second this season, Flaherty has been very good in his first year with Detroit, posting a 3.46 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 90:10 K:BB over 67.2 innings.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Pitches well but takes loss

Flaherty (1-4) allowed three runs on seven hits across 6.1 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Blue Jays. He walked one and struck out nine. Home runs by Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Daulton Varsho accounted for all of the runs against Flaherty, but the righty otherwise was sharp once again. He's got a solid 3.84 ERA and has struck out 81 batters across 61 innings this year. The problem has been run support, as he's allowed three earned runs or fewer in three of his four losses so far. Despite the lack of wins, Flaherty looks like a promising fantasy asset, and he'll aim to keep rolling in his next scheduled start, which is tentatively set for next Thursday against Boston.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Looks sharp in first win

Flaherty (1-3) allowed two runs on five hits across six innings to earn the win Saturday against the Diamondbacks. He walked two and struck out nine. Flaherty was sharp as he lowered his ERA to 3.79 and picked up his first win of the season. Despite having only the one win so far, the righty has had a nice bounceback campaign to this point after posting a 4.99 ERA with the Orioles and Cardinals last year. Flaherty has been buoyed by a rise in strikeouts, as he now has an 11.9 K/9 this season, up from 9.2 in 2023. He'll look to keep rolling in his next scheduled outing, which is is penciled in for Thursday against the Blue Jays.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Another quality start Sunday

Flaherty (0-3) was tagged with a loss Sunday after he pitched 6.2 innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits while striking out seven batters in a 9-3 defeat to Houston. Flaherty opened Sunday's contest by firing five scoreless innings before Kyle Tucker launched a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning. The Astros scratched across another run on him in the seventh frame before the right-hander's day came to an end with two outs in the inning. The performance marked his third straight quality start and sixth of the season over eight outings. Flaherty now owns a 3.88 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 63 strikeouts over 48.2 innings in eight starts in 2024 and will look to earn his first win of the year in his next projected start Saturday on the road in Arizona.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Takes loss despite quality start

Flaherty (0-2) took the loss Monday against Cleveland, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out six. Flaherty struggled with the Guardians' power, yielding three extra-base hits, including a solo homer in the sixth frame to Jose Ramirez. While the veteran righty has been an excellent source of strikeouts with 56 K's through 42 innings, he hasn't been as dominant in the run department but still owns a 3.86 ERA and has walked merely six batters. Flaherty will likely take the mound Sunday against the Astros for his next start.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Fans 10 in no-decision

Flaherty allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk over six innings in a no-decision Friday. He struck out 10 during the win over Minnesota. Flaherty was tagged with a two-run shot in the first inning but turned in four shutout frames after that. The Twins later pushed across two unearned runs in the sixth. Flaherty's produced a terrific 30:3 K:BB through 24.1 innings this season. That 11.1 K/9 is currently a career high and his first time producing a double-digit number in that category since the 2020 campaign. He also set a new season high with 19 whiffs. Flaherty is currently in line to take the mound in Tampa Bay next week.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Pitches into seventh versus Twins

Flaherty pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Twins. He did not factor into the decision. Flaherty was tagged for two runs in the second inning before giving up solo homer to Christian Vazquez in the fourth frame, accounting for the final tally on his ledger Sunday. The right-hander was able to pitch into the seventh inning for the first time in 2024, notching a season-high seven punchouts. The performance was his second quality start in three outings this year, and Flaherty will look to keep it up in his next projected start Friday on the road in Minnesota.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Allows six runs in loss

Flaherty (0-1) allowed six runs on nine hits and one walk over six innings to take the loss Sunday against the A's. He struck out five. Flaherty's five runs allowed over the first two innings, capped by a three-run homer by Zack Gelof, put the Tigers behind the eight ball from the start, but to his credit, Flaherty allowed only one more run the rest of the way and was able to grind his way through six innings to help save the Tigers from taxing too many arms. Flaherty's start Sunday was in stark contrast to his first start of the season, when he allowed one run and fanned seven over a six-inning quality start against the White Sox. He's tentatively slated to take the hill next week during a four-game home series against the Twins.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Has best spring outing

Flaherty tossed four scoreless innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He allowed one hit and struck out five. Flaherty came into the contest having allowed five runs across 3.2 innings this spring, so this was a step in the right direction. The righty struggled last season, posting a 4.99 across 144.1 innings with St. Louis and Baltimore, but he should be locked into a rotation spot in Detroit after agreeing to a one-year, $14 million deal. Fantasy managers may want to wait and see if Flaherty can string together a few good outings to start the regular season before investing too much, however.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Sharp in short team debut

Flaherty logged a scoreless inning without allowing a hit or a walk in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He struck out two. Flaherty, who joined the Tigers in December on a one-year, $14 million deal, looked good despite not lasting very long. The righty only tossed 10 pitches, with nine of them going for strikes. Flaherty figures to stretch out some in his next start as he ramps up for the regular season. He should have a rotation spot securely locked up, likely slotting in somewhere behind Tarik Skubal and fellow Detroit newcomer Kenta Maeda. Flaherty will be hoping to improve upon an uneven 2023 during which he posted a 4.99 ERA across 144.1 innings for the Cardinals and Orioles.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Joins Tigers on one-year deal

Flaherty signed a one-year, $14 million deal with the Tigers on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Flaherty will look to rebuild his value in the market after a couple down seasons, during which he struggled with injury and his control. Over the last two years, he's posted a 4.84 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 180.1 innings. However, if he can return to his early-career form, Flaherty would be a key peice of a promising Tigers rotation that also includes Tarik Skubal and fellow offseason addition Kenta Maeda.

  • Orioles' Jack Flaherty: Earns spot on ALDS roster

Flaherty secured a spot on the Orioles' roster for their ALDS matchup against Texas, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. Flaherty hasn't been used often since being moved to the bullpen in mid-September, but he's been effective in the games he has pitched, allowing one run in three innings while striking out four batters. With John Means (elbow) left off the Orioles' playoff roster, Flaherty may have an opportunity to return to a starting role in the postseason.

  • Orioles' Jack Flaherty: Punches out six in short start

Flaherty (8-9) allowed three earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six across four innings to take the loss Friday against the Rays. Flaherty had an uneven performance, with the positive being that he racked up 15 swinging strikes on only 79 pitchers. On the other hand, he allowed a lot of hard contact, including two doubles and a solo home run. Overall, Flaherty has now failed to work at least five innings in four of his last five turns through the rotation, during which he has a 9.15 ERA and 1.89 WHIP to go along with a 22:8 K:BB across 20.2 frames.
