There was a time when Dylan Carlson was one of the top prospects in baseball. There likely wasn't a scenario where managers envisioned Carlson signing a one-year deal at age 26 after being dumped by his second organization, but Baltimore swooped in and gave him a six-figure guarantee after he was non-tendered by Tampa Bay at the deadline. The Rays acquired Carlson at the last second of the deadline and hoped there was some more magic dust in the cupboard that had been applied to Randy Arozarena and Tommy Pham when those two outfielders were acquired from St. Louis, but the canister must have had an expiration date, as Carlson did very little for the Rays. He hit all three of his homers for them and hit 20 points better after the trade, but his actual and expected batting average on non-off-speed pitches was below .200 and his swing-and-miss rate was at least 30 percent on all pitch types. The old adage that says, once you display a skill, you own it, applies here, because Carlson has nearly 1,750 plate appearances in his major league career, and outside of a hot second half of 2021 in which he hit 11 homers with a .277/.343/.505 slash line, he has done very little over the remaining 1,500 plate appearances on his resume.

  • Orioles' Dylan Carlson: Looks to be on roster bubble

    Carlson is batting 8-for-29 (.320) with two home runs, eight RBI and two stolen bases this spring, but Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun doesn't project the outfielder as part of Baltimore's Opening Day Roster. Meyer instead lists Ramon Laureano, who has gone just 6-for-30 (.200) with one homer and three RBI in spring training, as his expected Orioles' fifth outfielder. Both players were signed to one-year contracts this past offseason, and it would be more surprising to see Laureano make the cut over Carlson based on their Grapefruit League showings. With that said, neither Carlson nor Laureano would enter the season with much fantasy relevance while functioning on a weak-side platoon in a lefty-heavy outfield.

  • Orioles' Dylan Carlson: Gets one-year deal from Baltimore

    The Orioles signed Carlson to a one-year, $975,000 contract Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. He'll earn an additional $25,000 if he gets to 200 plate appearances. Carlson was non-tendered by the Rays earlier this offseason after finishing the 2024 season with an ugly .209/.287/.277 batting line over 96 contests between St. Louis and Tampa Bay. The switch hitter has had just one healthy and productive season in the majors and that was his rookie year back in 2021. However, Carlson is still just 26 and has hit .285/.361/.431versus left-handed pitching, so he could be a useful short-side platoon bat for the Orioles.

    Carlson was non-tendered by the Rays on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Carlson was dealt to the Rays at the trade deadline and posted a .615 OPS, which was an improvement from his first half of the season with the Cardinals. Given his pedigree, and because he's still only 26 years old, Carlson may get a big-league deal from someone. However, his career 94 wRC+ and .304 wOBA likely mean he'll struggle to find regular playing time.
