Zac Gallen had a fantastic season and received some deserved votes for the Cy Young Award as he helped carry the Diamondbacks to their improbable World Series run. Most of his performance indicators were right in line with 2022 but better run support helped raise his wins while a near full-run jump in his ERA can be excused by the BABIP regression which we expected would come after his rather fortunate .237 BABIP in 2022. Simply put, there is not a performance issue to be concerned with as much as a workload concern. Gallen ended up throwing 243.2 innings in 2023, which was almost exactly double what he threw just two seasons ago. He managed a 52% increase in workload just fine from 2021 to 2022, but now we add another 32% increase in workload along with the stress of working in the postseason for the first time and we cannot help but wonder about the impact of that for 2024. 2023 was an excellent season, but it would not surprise us to see Gallen take a step back this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Throws sim game

Gallen (hamstring) threw 67 pitches in a simulated game Monday and will next have a bullpen session Thursday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. The Diamondbacks were preparing for Gallen to throw Monday, whether in a sim game or live batting practice, and decided on the sim game. He next heads to Chase Field on Thursday for a bullpen session, which will be caught by Gabriel Moreno, who is nursing a sprained left thumb. If all goes well Thursday, then Gallen could return during Arizona's series against Oakland that begins Friday.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Another sim game coming next week

Gallen (hamstring) is scheduled to throw another simulated game early next week and could be reinstated from the 15-day injured list shortly thereafter, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. After tossing 31- and 37-pitch bullpen sessions last week, Gallen advanced to facing hitters in a simulated game Tuesday. Gallen's strained right hamstring apparently responded well to the workout, but the Diamondbacks will still have him toss another sim game during the upcoming week before signing off on his return to the rotation. If all goes well during his second sim game, Gallen could return at some point during the Diamondbacks' series in Oakland next weekend.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Works off mound

Gallen (hamstring) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. Gallen began throwing off flat ground Saturday, and Tuesday marks the first time he's thrown off a mound since landing on the IL with a strained right hamstring. Manager Torey Lovullo said the 28-year-old righty is slated for another bullpen session Friday, after which he will likely progress to pitching sim games before returning to Arizona's rotation.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Throws on flat ground, bullpen next

Gallen (hamstring) threw a flat-ground session Saturday and is expected to throw a bullpen session soon, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports. Gallen was cleared for throwing June 3 and was able to complete a flat-ground session Saturday. The next box for Gallen to check in his recovery from a right hamstring strain would be a bullpen session, which should occur in the coming days. Gallen will be eligible to return from the 15-day injured list June 15, though it's unclear if he'll be ready to join the big club by then.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Cleared for throwing

Gallen (hamstring) will begin a throwing progression Tuesday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. Gallen appears to have his sights set on returning from the injured list when first eligible after being diagnosed with a right hamstring strain Friday. This will be a strong first step toward meeting that goal, and he should be cleared to resume mound work quickly considering he last threw off a mound Thursday.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Lands on IL with hamstring strain

The Diamondbacks placed Gallen on the 15-day injured list Friday due to a right hamstring strain. Gallen was pulled from Thursday's start against the Mets after throwing just six pitches without recording an out. He has been dealing with a right hamstring issue since April 26, and the 28-year-old right-hander will now be on the shelf for an extended period of time after aggravating the injury. It's unclear how long Gallen will be sidelined, but if he misses only the minimum, that would put him in line to return June 15 against the White Sox. In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks recalled right-hander Slade Cecconi from Triple-A Reno.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Produces quality start

Gallen (5-2) picked up the win Sunday against Baltimore, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks across six innings. He struck out four. Gallen notched a second straight quality start, following up a one-hit gem against the Reds with Sunday's two-run showing against the O's. Three of the four hits against Gallen went for extra bases, as he allowed doubles to Anthony Santander and Jordan Westburg while Adley Rutschman slugged a solo homer in the sixth. Gallen owns a 2.86 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP across 44.0 innings in 2024. He's lined up for a home start against the Tigers next weekend.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Excellent against Cincinnati

Gallen (4-2) earned the win Tuesday over the Reds, allowing one hit and three walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out six. Gallen had gone 11 days between starts after suffering a hamstring injury on April 26 against Seattle. He certainly looked healthy Tuesday, holding Cincinnati to one hit en route to his third scoreless outing this season. It's an encouraging effort from Gallen, who'd dropped his previous two starts, allowing eight runs over 10 innings in that span. He lowered his ERA to 2.84 with a 1.13 WHIP and 41:12 K:BB across seven starts (38 innings) this year. Gallen's currently in line for a road start Sunday against the Orioles in his next outing.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Slated for next start Tuesday

Manager Torey Lovullo said after Wednesday's 8-0 loss to the Dodgers that Gallen (hamstring) will make his next start Tuesday against the Reds, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports. Gallen was removed from his most recent start last Friday with a hamstring injury. The Diamondbacks had tentatively planned for Gallen to start the series finale with the Dodgers, but he ultimately needed more time to heal up from the injury. Arizona will skip his turn in the rotation entirely this week, but he'll tentatively line up for two starts the following week. After his matchup with the Reds, Gallen would then be slated for a start May 12 in Baltimore.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Stumbles in San Francisco

Gallen (3-1) was saddled with a loss Saturday in San Francisco, yielding five runs on nine hits and one walk over five frames. He struck out six. Jung Hoo Lee hit Gallen's second pitch in the bottom of the first inning for a home run, and the Giants wound up plating a couple runs on four hits in the opening frame. Patrick Bailey also took Gallen deep in the fifth, representing the first two long balls the righty has surrendered this season. While he walked just one batter, Gallen threw three wild pitches in this one, so he just seemed a tad off in general. He had been rolling prior to Saturday's dud, so Gallen should be able to flush this performance and fare better his next time out.

Gallen (3-0) threw six shutout innings in a win over the Cardinals on Sunday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out seven. Five of his seven strikeouts came from his knuckle curve, as he registered 11 whiffs on the afternoon. He's allowed one run or fewer in three-of-four starts so far and boasts an excellent 1.64 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 26:7 K:BB in 22 innings.
