Royals' John Schreiber: Serves up walk-off homer Tuesday
Schreiber (1-2) took the loss Tuesday against the Astros after giving up a walk-off home run before recording an out in the ninth inning.
It wasn't a blown save due to the game being tied at 1-1 before he served up the homer to Isaac Paredes, but Schreiber still allowed his first run since April 16. The 31-year-old right-hander has worked in a setup role along with Lucas Erceg ahead of closer Carlos Estevez this year, which has prevented Schreiber from seeing a single save opportunity so far in 2025. Through his first 17 innings, Schreiber sports a 2.12 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB.

Royals' John Schreiber: Begins season in setup role
Schreiber allowed one run on two hits while striking out two over 1.1 innings Sunday against the Guardians.
Schreiber saw his strikeout rate dip to 20.5 percent in 2024 in his first year in Kansas City but remained useful with a 3.66 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 51.2 regular-season innings. He could be a nice source of holds (24 last year) ahead of Lucas Erceg and Carlos Estevez in the bullpen.

Royals' John Schreiber: Avoids arbitration
The Royals and Schreiber avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.3 million contract Thursday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Schreiber had been arbitration-eligible for a second time. The right-handed reliever saw his strikeout rate dip to 20.5 percent in 2024 in his first year in Kansas City but remained useful with a 3.66 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. He'll be used in middle relief in 2025.

Royals' John Schreiber: Earns win in matinee
Schreiber (4-3) struck out one and didn't allow a baserunner over 1.2 scoreless innings, earning the win in the first game of Monday's doubleheader versus the Guardians.
Schreiber has pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, earning a win, a save and a hold over three appearances since he returned from a knee injury. He's now at a 3.76 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 32:14 K:BB with two saves and 21 holds over 40.2 innings this year. Schreiber has allowed a lot of baserunners, but he's still been able to maintain a setup role in the Royals' struggling bullpen.

Royals' John Schreiber: Picks up save in return
Schreiber earned the save in Monday's 5-3 victory over the Angels, working around a hit to pitch a shutout inning with no strikeouts.
The 30-year-old reliever saw immediate action in his first game back from a knee injury, collecting a save for the first time since May 10, which oddly, also came against the Angels. However, Schreiber likely will only serve as a backup closer going forward, as he spelled Lucas Erceg, who collected the two previous Kansas City saves, after Erceg fired 28 pitches in Sunday's contest. Overall, Schreiber now sports a 4.03 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 30:13 K:BB across 38 innings this season.

The Royals activated Schreiber (knee) from the 15-day injured list Monday.
Schreiber will rejoin the Royals bullpen after a three-week stay on the injured list due to right knee soreness. The 30-year-old has a 4.14 ERA and a 30:13 K:BB across 37 innings for the Royals this season. Carlos Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move.

Schreiber landed on the 15-day IL on July 29 due to a right knee patella tendon injury. He threw his second bullpen session Sunday, and the 30-year-old right-hander is ready to embark on a rehab assignment to prepare himself for a return to the big club. Schreiber has been progressing well from a right knee patella tendon injury he sustained in late July. The Royals haven't provided an updated diagnosis for Schreiber after he was forced out of his relief appearance in Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Cubs with right knee patella tendon discomfort, but the team has apparently already deduced that the right-handed reliever is dealing with more than a day-to-day concern. Schreiber (3-3) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out one over one-third of an inning, taking the loss Friday versus the Rockies.
Schreiber loaded the bases in the eighth inning and gave up a two-run double to Brenton Doyle that gave the Rockies a 4-2 lead. The Royals couldn't bounce back, leaving Schreiber with his second loss in six appearances. The right-hander has given up 11 runs (nine earned) over his last 6.1 innings spanning nine outings. For the season, he's at a 4.46 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 27:13 K:BB with a save and 19 holds through 34.1 innings. While he remains in a high-leverage role, his performance has been too volatile to trust in recent weeks.

Schreiber was on the hook for three of the five runs the Rangers scored in the sixth inning. After opening June with four scoreless innings, Schreiber's struggles have returned -- he's given up eight runs (six earned) over his last four appearances, taking two blown saves in that span. Friday's outing pushed his ERA up to 4.15 with a 1.48 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB over 30.1 innings. While he has a save and 16 holds to his name this year, he could see a move to a low-leverage role if he continues to falter.

Schreiber got the final out of the seventh inning but put three straight batters on base to begin the eighth. James McArthur relieved him and couldn't stop the Padres' rally in what ended up being a nine-run frame. After looking like one of the Royals' most dominant relievers in April, Schreiber posted a much worse 6.52 ERA and 2.17 WHIP over 9.2 innings in May. He's at a decent 3.00 ERA on the year, but his 1.33 WHIP and 17:7 K:BB over 24 innings are concerning, as he's giving up too many hits and striking out too few batters. Schreiber has a save and 14 holds on the year while operating in a setup role.

Royals' John Schreiber: Tallies first save
Schreiber picked up the save Friday against the Angels. He pitched a shutout inning, allowing one hit with no strikeouts.
Schreiber collected his first save of the season and the 10th of his career. Royals closer James McArthur had worked back-to-back nights on Tuesday and Wednesday, so manager Matt Quatraro could have been giving him extra rest Friday night. However, McArthur also blew saves Sunday and Tuesday and has seen his ERA jump from 2.87 to 4.15 in the last week, so his hold on the ninth-inning role could be slipping.

Royals' John Schreiber: Collects third win
Schreiber (3-0) earned the win Friday versus the Rangers, allowing two hits and two walks with one strikeout in a scoreless inning.
Schreiber erased a walk with a double play, then loaded the bases again before striking out Marcus Semien to end the top of the seventh inning. The Royals rallied for six runs in their half of the frame, and Schreiber ended up with the win. He's pitched 5.1 consecutive scoreless innings, and he's been scored on just once this season, pitching to 0.59 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB over 15.1 innings. He's getting some good luck, as indicated by a .227 BABIP and 3.06 FIP, but the right-hander looks poised to play an important high-leverage role for the Royals throughout the year.
