Player Outlook
The manner in which Kyle Bradish finished 2022 teased an impending breakout, but no one expected the fourth-lowest ERA among qualifiers. Granted, he benefited from a .270 BABIP and 79.1% left-on-base mark, but Bradish's 18.5 K-BB% was 18th among qualified starters. The major difference from the previous season was Bradish threw fewer four-seamers while upping sinker usage as well as adding velocity and spin to his curveball. The cumulative effects generated more grounders and swinging strikes. However, his ascent to the top of the Baltimore rotation suffered a setback in February when it was reported that Bradish had been diagnosed with a sprained UCL in his right elbow. While the plan is to go the rest-and-rehab route, the threat of Tommy John surgery will hang in the air like a dark cloud. The Orioles are already saying that he will miss the start of the season, though Bradish is expected to start a throwing program relatively early on in camp.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Undergoes Tommy John surgery

Orioles general manager Mike Elias announced that Bradish (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery with an internal brace Wednesday, Danielle Allentuck of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. Bradish was first diagnosed with a partial UCL tear in his elbow in mid-February, and while his initial rehab was successful -- he posted a 2.75 ERA and 53:15 K:BB over 39.1 innings covering eight starts -- he suffered a setback coming out of his most recent outing last Friday. After having his elbow re-examined, Bradish made the decision to have the surgery. Elias said Wednesday that he expects Bradish to miss 12-to-18 months, leaving the right-hander's availability for the entire 2025 season in doubt.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Sidelined again with UCL sprain

The Orioles placed Bradish (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a right UCL sprain. Bradish pitched five frames in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Phillies before leaving the contest with right elbow discomfort. Upon further examination, the 27-year-old was diagnosed with a UCL sprain, the same injury that kept him out for the first month of the season. Bradish avoided surgery the first time around, but a procedure could become a more distinct possibility if the rest and rehab isn't deemed a viable treatment plan after his latest setback. Even if Bradish receives a more favorable prognosis in the coming days, fantasy managers should still prepare for Bradish to miss more than the minimum 15 days. Left-hander Nick Vespi was called up from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday to replace Bradish on Baltimore's major-league roster in a corresponding move.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Dealing with elbow problems

Bradish reported having issues with his right elbow after the fifth inning of Friday's game against the Phillies, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. Manager Brandon Hyde said after the game that Bradish will undergo tests on his elbow to determine the cause of the issue. The 27-year-old missed the first month of the season after suffering a UCL sprain during spring training, so it makes sense that the Orioles would be cautious with him. He's lined up to pitch again next Friday against the Astros, but his chances of making his next start will likely depend on the results of the testing.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Limits Rays to one hit

Bradish (2-0) earned the win over Tampa Bay on Saturday, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out nine batters over six scoreless innings. Bradish was given two extra days of rest after struggling against the Rays in his previous start, and the extra time off proved to be a remedy to getting him back on the track. The right-hander allowed an infield single to the first batter he faced in the outing, then retired the final 18 hitters to step up to the plate against him. Bradish is still easing his way back after missing the first month of the campaign due to an elbow injury, which explains why he was pulled after just 88 pitches, but that was enough for him to pick up both his second win and second quality start. If he returns to pitching on a regular five-day schedule, Bradish is next lined up for a tough road matchup against Atlanta.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Confirmed for Saturday's start

Bradish will start Saturday's game against Tampa Bay, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. The Orioles' original schedule would have placed Bradish on the mound Thursday against Toronto, but he'll get two extra days of rest before taking on the Rays at Tropicana Field. Manager Brandon Hyde said Thursday that Bradish's start wasn't pushed back due to health concerns, so he should be a full go Saturday. Bradish faced the Rays in his last start, yielding five runs over 2.2 innings in a no-decision.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Escapes with no-decision Saturday

Bradish came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 9-5 win over the Rays, giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out six. The right-hander wasn't at his sharpest, but he mostly got pecked to death as only one of the hits off him -- a triple by Yandy Diaz in the second inning -- went for extra bases. Bradish got more than enough run support to avoid his first loss of the season, however. He'll take a 3.18 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 40:14 K:BB through 28.1 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Toronto.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Tosses seven no-hit innings

Bradish (1-0) earned the win over the White Sox on Sunday, pitching seven no-hit and scoreless innings. He walked four and struck out 11. The start of the game was delayed due to rain, but that didn't throw Bradish out of his rhythm. He threw 63 of 103 pitches for strikes while generating 13 whiffs. While the four walks were a season high for the right-hander, it's nothing to be concerned about given his overall dominance in the contest. He's now at a 1.75 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 34:11 K:BB through 25.2 innings across five starts this season. Bradish is projected to make his next start at home versus the Rays.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Completes five innings Tuesday

Bradish allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out six over five innings Tuesday versus the Cardinals before the game was suspended due to inclement weather in the sixth inning. Bradish likely had more in the tank after throwing 74 pitches (52 strikes), but there's virtually no chance he pitches when play resumes Wednesday. Bradish has looked dialed in through four starts so far, but he's yet to pitch past the fifth inning after having his workload managed following a UCL strain that shelved him for the first month of the season. The right-hander is at a 2.41 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 23:7 K:BB over 18.2 innings so far. Bradish is lined up to make his next start on the road against the White Sox, a favorable spot for him to potentially earn his first quality start of 2024.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Goes four innings vs. Toronto

Bradish did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out three. Both runs against Bradish came on a Bo Bichette double in the third inning. The right-hander was pulled after throwing 85 pitches, as the Orioles continue to limit Bradish's pitch count after he missed the first month of the season with a strained UCL. The 27-year-old Bradish sports a 2.63 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB across his first three starts (13.2 innings) this season. He's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Cardinals early next week.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Tuesday's game postponed

Bradish and the Orioles won't play against the Blue Jays on Tuesday since the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The contest will be made up via a traditional doubleheader July 29. Bradish will simply have his start pushed back a day and will pitch in Wednesday's series finale versus Toronto, per Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Fans nine Wednesday

Bradish tossed five innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out nine batters in a no-decision against Washington on Wednesday. In his second start of the campaign, Bradish nudged his pitch count up a bit from 84 to 90 while completing five frames. The right-hander gave up just one run -- as he did in his first start of the season -- and racked up nine strikeouts but settled for a no-decision as both teams' offenses were quiet until the latter portion of the contest. In terms of health, Bradish is still working his way back from the UCL sprain he was diagnosed with in mid-February, though he already appears to be in good form; through two starts, he's posted a 14:4 K:BB while giving up just two runs and eights hits across 9.2 innings.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Solid in season debut

Bradish did not factor into the decision Thursday against the Yankees, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five. Bradish had to contend with some traffic Thursday, though he'd ultimately hold the Yankees to one run on Anthony Rizzo's two-out RBI single in the third inning. Overall, it was an encouraging debut from Bradish after he'd missed the first month of the season with a partially torn UCL -- he averaged 95 mph with his sinker while inducing six whiffs on his slider, both in line with his numbers from last year. It remains to be seen how much deeper the Orioles will allow Bradish to work in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for a road matchup with the Nationals.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Set to rejoin rotation

Manager Brandon Hyde said Saturday that Bradish (elbow) is poised to return from the 15-day injured list during the upcoming week and will reclaim a spot in the Baltimore rotation, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports. Bradish's return can't come soon enough for an Orioles rotation that remains without John Means (forearm) and Tyler Wells (elbow). The right-hander made three rehab starts while recovering from a right UCL sprain that cropped up early in the spring and forced him to the IL to begin the season. His his most recent rehab outing Friday with Triple-A Norfolk was Bradish's sharpest yet, as he struck out six while allowing one run on five hits and one walk over five innings on 77 pitches (49 strikes). Since Bradish had been pitching every fifth day during his rehab assignment, he could slot into the Baltimore rotation as soon as Wednesday, but the Orioles are more likely to give him an extra day to recover and have him take the hill for Thursday's series finale with the Yankees at Camden Yards.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Continuing rehab in Triple-A

Bradish (elbow) will make his next rehab start with Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports. Bradish made his first rehab appearance Tuesday with Double-A Bowie. He threw 44 pitches and allowed just one hit over three scoreless innings while striking out four. Bradish will now move up to Triple-A Norfolk, as the right-hander continues his rehab from a partial UCL tear that kept him from pitching in spring training.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Sharp in first rehab start

Bradish (elbow) yielded just one hit and struck out four over three scoreless innings in his first rehab start with Double-A Bowie on Tuesday. Bradish needed just 44 pitches to cruise through his three frames and was hitting 95-to-96 mph on the radar gun, per Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com. It's a terrific first step for the right-hander as he works his way back from a partial UCL tear in his right elbow. Bradish will need a handful of rehab outings before rejoining the Orioles' rotation.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Continuing rehab program

Bradish (elbow) is headed to Sarasota on Saturday to continue his throwing rehab program, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Bradish threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Friday after being placed on the team's 15-day injured list Thursday. There's no exact timeline for his return, but Bradish was able to utilize all of his pitches during his throwing session, and GM Mike Elias said previously that he expected Bradish back early in the first half. With the Orioles in 2023, Bradish went 12-7 over 30 starts while recording a 2.83 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 168:44 K:BB over 168.2 innings.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Goes on 15-day IL

The Orioles placed Bradish (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. The fact that Bradish is opening the season on the 15-day IL rather than the 60-day IL supports the notion that the Orioles are hopeful the 27-year-old will avoid a longer-term absence to begin the season while he recovers from a right UCL sprain. Bradish remains likely to miss all of April, but since he resumed throwing bullpen sessions more than two weeks ago, the right-hander is seemingly on pace to pitch at some point in May, barring any setbacks in the ramp-up process.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Elbow responding well

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Tuesday that Bradish's right elbow is responding "well right now" to the pitcher's throwing program, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. Bradish resumed mound work last Wednesday after weeks of flat-ground throwing. While the right-hander has thrown almost all fastballs, Hyde admitted that Bradish "might have spun a couple breaking balls," as well. It remains relatively early on in Bradish's rehab from a partially torn UCL, but so far things have progressed as well as can be expected.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Throws bullpen session

Bradish (elbow) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. It's the first time he's thrown from a mound since being diagnosed with a partial UCL tear in mid-February. Bradish felt good during the all-fastballs session, manager Brandon Hyde said afterward. The right-hander will begin the season on the injured list, but he continues to take positive steps in his recovery and remains optimistic surgery can be avoided.

  • Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Extends out to 140 feet

Bradish (elbow) played catch from 140 feet Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Bradish noted afterward that his right elbow still feels good and also added that 140 feet is about the maximum distance from which he usually plays catch. That could indicate he'll be cleared to throw from a mound soon, although it has not yet been revealed when that will happen. Bradish is working his way back from a partial UCL tear in his pitching elbow and will begin the season on the injured list, but he remains hopeful of avoiding surgery.
