Injuries were a problem again for Lars Nootbaar in 2024, as he was limited to just 109 games because of a fractured rib and strained oblique. He's now made five trips to the injured list since the beginning of the 2023 campaign. Nootbaar also saw his ground ball rate rise again in 2024 to a career-high 51.7 percent. Those are the main two factors as to why he's never hit more than 14 home runs in a season even as his quality of contact (49.5 percent hard-hit rate, 9.9 percent barrel rate in 2024) point to a guy who should be a 20-plus homer guy. That said, between the batted-ball data and elite walk rate, Nootbaar still brings interesting skills to the table if he can ever put together a full, healthy season.

Nootbaar singled twice and drew a walk and is now sporting a .480 on-base percentage this spring. He hit leadoff Wednesday and is a candidate to bat there during the regular season, but Masyn Winn (wrist) -- who didn't play Wednesday -- is still the likely favorite to hit at the top of the batting order for St. Louis.

    Nootbaar will earn $2.95 million in 2025 after winning his arbitration case with the Cardinals, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. The Cardinals had filed at $2.45 million. It's a substantial raise for Nootbaar, who is in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The 27-year-old has had trouble with injuries but has been productive when on the field, slashing .246/.348/.425 over parts of four seasons in St. Louis. Nootbaar is currently slated to be the Cardinals' everyday left fielder, although he could move to center field if the club winds up hanging on to Nolan Arenado.

The Cardinals will presumably ease Nootbaar into swinging by having him hit off a tee or hit soft-toss throws before he eventually gains clearance to hit against higher-velocity pitching. In addition to being able to hit without discomfort, Nootbaar, who has been on the injured list since May 31 with a left oblique strain, will also need to prove that the injury doesn't compromise him when he runs the bases or plays the outfield. He still appears to be at least a couple weeks away from being a realistic option to rejoin the Cardinals, and Nootbaar will presumably need to go out on a minor-league rehab assignment prior to being activated.
