  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Begins rehab assignment

Weathers (finger) tossed three scoreless innings with three strikeouts in his first rehab start with Single-A Jupiter on Tuesday.

Weathers threw 43 pitches in his first game action since he went down with a left index finger strain back in early June. The left-hander figures to require at least one more rehab start, likely at a higher affiliate, before being re-inserted into the Marlins' rotation. Weathers was showing signs of a breakout before getting injured, compiling a 3.55 ERA and 67:20 K:BB over 71 frames covering 13 starts.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Set for second live BP session

Weathers (finger) is expected to throw three innings and around 50 pitches in a live batting practice session Tuesday, MLB.com reports.

Weathers looks set to increase the volume of his throwing after he tossed two innings and 35 pitches in his first live BP session Friday. The southpaw has been on the shelf since June 8 with a left index finger strain but looks poised to return from the 60-day injured list at some point in the second half of September.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Completes bullpen

Weathers threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Friday and is scheduled to throw another Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Weathers has been on the shelf since June 8 due to a left index finger strain but has been making significant progress in August. Friday's bullpen was Weathers' first mound work since sustaining the injury though, and he shouldn't be expected back with the Marlins until September. How the team handles his rehab should indicate whether he's ticketed for a return to the rotation or will pitch out of the bullpen upon his activation from the IL.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Nearing mound work

Weathers (finger) completed a flat-ground throwing session Monday and is hopeful to resume throwing bullpen sessions in two weeks, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Weathers was placed on the injured list June 8 with a left index finger strain and has had a slow recovery thus far. Though his workout Monday is a step in the right direction, Weathers isn't on pace to face hitters until late August in a best-case scenario, and he'll require multiple rehab starts after that before a return from the 60-day IL becomes a possibility. The southpaw might not have enough time to get fully stretched out for a starting role during his rehab assignment, so if he comes off the IL in September, he might have to work out of the bullpen.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Begins playing catch

Weathers (finger) has been cleared to play catch, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

It's the first time he's done any throwing since going down with a left index finger strain back in early June. Given that he was shut down for more than six weeks, it's going to take a long time for Weathers to get ramped back up, but this was the first step. He's pitched well this season for the Marlins when healthy, posting a 3.55 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67:20 K:BB through 71 innings.
