Player Outlook
Patrick Sandoval came into last season as a breakout candidate after posting a career best 2.91 ERA the year prior, but instead he regressed with a 4.11 ERA and career-worst 1.51 WHIP. His fastball velocity remained the same and he continued to land well above league average at limiting hard contact and inducing groundballs, so the primary culprit for his drop-off can largely be linked to a decline in his ability to get hitters to miss pitches and to chase balls outside the strike zone. Whereas Sandoval ranked in the 76th and 73rd percentile, respectively, in whiff percentage and chase rate in 2022, he fell back closer to league average last season, finishing in the 63rd and 53rd percentile. Not coincidentally, the left-hander's strikeout rate dipped from 23.7% to 19.6%, and the impact of that drop was exacerbated by a career-worst 11.3% walk rate. Sandoval has good enough stuff to be able to bounce back, and working with a new pitching coach may help, but the inconsistency and modest punchout potential will likely keep him off the draft board in many fantasy leagues heading into the new campaign.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Moved to 60-day IL

The Angels transferred Sandoval (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. Sandoval was diagnosed with a torn UCL in his left elbow Monday and is expected to miss at least a full calendar year. He'll trade places on the 60-day IL with Chase Silseth (elbow), who was activated and optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Diagnosed with torn UCL

Sandoval told reporters Monday that he has a high-grade flexor tear and a torn UCL in his left elbow, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Sandoval was removed in the third inning of Friday's start against the Dodgers, and he was placed on the injured list Saturday. The injury is more severe than what was originally labelled a left elbow strain, and the 27-year-old southpaw will have to undergo surgery. Whether Sandoval undergoes an internal brace procedure or Tommy John has yet to be determined, but he will be out of action for at least a year. Prior to the injury, Sandoval was 2-8 over 16 starts with a 5.08 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 81:35 K:BB over 79.2 innings.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Put on IL

Sandoval was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a left elbow strain. Sandoval's move to the IL comes after he was lifted in the third inning of his start Friday against the Dodgers with what was initially labeled left forearm tightness. While he's eligible to return from the IL on July 7, the Angels could opt to play it safe with the 27-year-old and hold him out until the All-Star break. Guillermo Zuniga was called up from Triple-A Salt in a corresponding move, though he'll head to the bullpen and won't be a replacement in the rotation for Sandoval.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Early exit Friday

Sandoval left Friday's start against the Dodgers with an apparent injury, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Sandoval walked Shohei Ohtani in the third inning and motioned to the dugout immediately afterward. He exited the game with trainers, though the exact nature of the issue remains unclear.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Allows three runs in no-decision

Sandoval did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Giants, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts over five innings. Sandoval surrendered a two-run home run to Heliot Ramos in a 31-pitch first inning then allowed a run on a double by Ramos in the fifth. Sandoval left the game after five frames with a 3-1 deficit before Logan O'Hoppe tied the game on a homer in the sixth. Sandoval has alternated good starts with bad starts throughout most of the season and now owns a 5.24 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 80:33 K:BB in 15 outings. He tentatively lines up to face the Dodgers next week.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Holds Padres to one run

Sandoval did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's win over the Padres, allowing one run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven over six innings. Sandoval put together his second straight quality start but once again was left with nothing to show for it in the win column, as the Angels didn't take a lead until the bottom of the seventh. The lefty struck out the side in the second and retired nine straight at one point before Jurickson Profar banged out a base hit off him with two outs in the sixth. Sandoval has now recorded seven strikeouts in consecutive outings, something he only did three times over his first 11 starts of the year. He'll carry a 5.00 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 71:28 K:BB (66.2 innings) into his next start, which projects to come against the Astros this weekend.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Quality start in loss

Sandoval (2-8) was tagged with the loss against the Yankees on Thursday, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks over six innings while striking out seven. Sandoval pitched well on the night and didn't surrender a hit until the top of the fourth when Aaron Judge took him deep for a two-run shot. The lefty would allow just one hit and one walk from that point on before being relieved by Adam Cimber to open the seventh. It was a nice bounceback effort for Sandoval after allowing a season-high eight runs in his previous start. However, he's lost his last three decisions (spanning four starts) and has walked at least three batters in three consecutive outings.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Shelled in loss

Sandoval (2-7) took the loss Friday against Cleveland, allowing eight runs on six hits and four walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out four. Sandoval took a beating as he yielded a career-high three homers in the outing. The 27-year-old lefty also struggled with his command, issuing four walks for the first time since a seven-run, four-inning disaster in Cincinnati on April 20. Overall, the Angels starter sports a 5.60 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 57:24 K:BB in 54.2 innings. Sandoval gets no reprieve in his next start, which is currently scheduled to come at home against the scorching hot Yankees.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Steady versus Rangers

Sandoval allowed one run on three hits and three walks while striking out five over six innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Saturday. Sandoval walked multiple batters for just the second time in his last five outings. He was able to limit the damage to an Adolis Garcia solo home run in the sixth inning Saturday, earning his second quality start of 2024. Sandoval has had plenty of ups and downs this year, pitching to a 4.59 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 53:20 K:BB across 51 innings over 10 starts. The southpaw's next start is projected to be at home versus the Guardians.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Fans seven in win

Sandoval (2-5) picked up the win Tuesday against Pittsburgh after throwing seven scoreless innings and striking out seven batters while giving up three hits and a walk. Coming off a 10-strikeout performance in a tough-luck loss during his last start, Sandoval completely silenced the Pirates' bats Tuesday while continuing to strike out batters at a notable clip. Following his dominant outing, he still sits at a 4.85 ERA and 1.49 WHIP through eight starts, but he has enough positive momentum to warrant consideration from fantasy managers during his next start Sunday versus Kansas City.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Fans 10 in defeat

Sandoval (1-5) took the loss Wednesday against Philadelphia, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks over five innings. He struck out 10. Despite tying for the second most strikeouts of his career and tying his season-best hits allowed total, Sandoval was stuck with his third consecutive loss as the Angels could only muster one run via a solo homer by Ehire Adrianza. He's now in a four-way tie for the most losses in baseball and has yet to complete six innings in a start this year. The southpaw is tentatively scheduled for a start against the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Saddled with fourth loss

Sandoval (1-4) allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits over 5.2 innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against Minnesota. Sandoval coughed up a solo homer to Carlos Santana in the second inning, and the Twins continued to tack on runs throughout the night. Over his last four starts, Sandoval has gone 0-3 while yielding 14 earned runs over 19.2 innings. He did generate 13 swinging strikes Friday though, his second-highest total of the season. Sandoval will carry a 6.33 ERA into his next matchup, which is projected to come at home against the Phillies next week.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Effective in no-decision

Sandoval didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks across five innings against Tampa Bay. He struck out three. Sandoval fared much better in his second go-around with the Rays on Monday, allowing one run after surrendering four (three earned) against them on April 9. However, his efforts didn't translate into the win column as the Halos didn't get on the board until the eighth frame. The southpaw owns a 4.67 ERA through four starts and has yet to allow a home run in 17.1 innings of action. He's scheduled for a Saturday start against the Reds at Great American Ball Park.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Struggles in loss

Sandoval (1-2) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over five innings against Tampa Bay. He struck out six. Sandoval was all over the place Tuesday, walking multiple batters for a third straight start while logging a pair of wild pitches and a balk. Two of the four runs against Sandoval were put on base via free passes and the Rays hit a trio of doubles off him. The southpaw has yet to make it through six innings in a start this season, but considering he's been good at limiting power and owns a .421 BABIP, better days are likely ahead for Sandoval. He's in line for a rematch against the Rays on Monday.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Rebounds in second start

Sandoval (1-1) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 5.2 innings in a 10-2 victory over Miami. He struck out seven. It was an encouraging outing from Sandoval after the left-hander was tagged for five runs (three earned) in just 1.2 innings in an Opening Day loss. Sandoval held the Marlins to just a pair of third-inning runs while the Angels' offense provided plenty of support in a comfortable win. Sandoval's ERA now sits at 6.14 through two starts after he went 7-13 with a 4.11 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 128:74 K:BB across 28 outings last season.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Short outing in loss

Sandoval (0-1) allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out two across 1.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Angels. Sandoval was handed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but he allowed multiple runs in each frame that he appeared to take the loss. There was some poor batted ball luck involved, as he allowed only one extra-base hit, though there was still nothing redeemable from his first start of the new campaign. Sandoval has also had a WHIP over 1.30 in all but one season in the majors, and his struggles in limiting baserunners have carried over into 2024.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Receives nod for Opening Day

The Angels announced Tuesday that Sandoval will start Opening Day against the Orioles on March 28, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports. The left-hander made a career-high 28 starts last season but took a step back with a 4.11 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 128:74 K:BB across 144.2 innings, so it's a bit of a surprise he'll get the nod Opening Day. Sandoval also wasn't particularly sharp during spring training with a 7.15 ERA and 10:6 K:BB over 11.1 innings, and he'll have a tough matchup in Baltimore to begin the campaign.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Settles with Angels

The Angels and Sandoval avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.025 million contract Thursday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. It's a sizable raise for Sandoval, who was in his second year of arbitration eligibility. The left-hander experienced a breakout in 2022 but regressed to a 4.11 ERA and 128:74 K:BB over 144.2 frames in 2023. He'll be seeking more consistency in 2024.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Placed on injured list

The Angels placed Sandoval on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right oblique strain. With a week left in the regular season, Sandoval's trip to the IL will cause him to miss the rest of the year. He finishes 2023 with a 4.11 ERA and 1.51 WHIP through 144.2 innings across 28 starts, and he'll be replaced on the roster by Kolton Ingram, who was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move. Sandoval was on track to start the final game of the season Sunday, and the Angels have yet to announce a replacement.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Dealing with oblique injury

Sandoval left Monday's start against Texas with right oblique tightness, Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times reports. With the Angels already eliminated from postseason contention, it would be surprising to see Sandoval pitch again this year with just a handful of games left, especially considering the location of his injury. The team should have an official update on his availability down the stretch after evaluating him further over the next day or so.
