Player Outlook
Los Angeles' defense gave them just enough of a boost to help them advance one round in the playoffs, but they're not close to being one of the NFL's most dominant units. Case in point, the DST finished 23rd in Fantasy points in 2024 even though they scored 11-plus points in each of their final three meaningful regular-season games. Fantasy managers shouldn't feel obligated to roll with the Rams in Week 1 versus Houston, but they might do so just to have them on the roster for what appears to be a favorable matchup Week 2 at Tennessee. By Week 3, they'll be off of everyone's teams, though.

  • Rams' Derion Kendrick: Brought back by Rams

Los Angeles signed Kendrick to a contract Tuesday. The Rams recently waived Kendrick on Friday, but it appears the team always intended to reunite with the 2022 sixth-round pick. Kendrick missed the entire 2024 campaign due to a torn ACL but had been participating in OTAs and was waived without an injury designation, indicating that he's fully healthy. He started 12 of 17 regular-season appearances in 2023 and will now compete with Darious Williams and Ahkello Witherspoon to regain a key role at cornerback.

  • Derion Kendrick: Let go by Los Angeles

The Rams waived Kendrick on Friday, Stu Jackson of the team's official site reports. Kendrick suffered a torn ACL last July and missed the entire season. However, he had been participating in OTAs prior to being waived and wasn't given an injury designation, so Kendrick is presumably healthy again. The Georgia product had been a prominent part of the Rams' defense prior to getting hurt, as he started 12 of the team's 17 games in 2023. For the time being, Darious Williams and Ahkello Witherspoon appear to be Los Angeles' top outside cornerbacks.

  • Rams' Larrell Murchison: Spotted at OTAs

Murchison (foot) has been a participant in the Rams' offseason training activities. Murchison broke his foot during practice last October and wasn't able to return from IR, though he was designated to return ahead of the Rams' divisional-round loss to Philadelphia. The veteran defensive tackle now appears to be back to health and is slated to serve as depth along the defensive line after re-signing with Los Angeles in mid-March.

  • Rams' Derion Kendrick: Participating in OTAs

Kendrick (knee) has been taking part in the Rams' offseason training activities. Kendrick tore his ACL last July and missed the entire campaign. He had been slated for a prominent role after totaling 49 tackles and 10 defensed passes, including one interception, while playing in all 17 regular-season games in 2023. If Kendrick is able to fully return from the injury, he could again be in line for a significant role, though Darious Williams and Ahkello Witherspoon may be ahead of him on the cornerback depth chart.

  • Rams' Braden Fiske: Deemed fully healthy

Fiske (knee) has been a full participant at Rams' OTAs this week, Stu Jackson of the Rams' official site reports. The defensive lineman injured his knee three snaps into Los Angeles' divisional-round loss to the Eagles back in January and required minor offseason surgery. Fiske was one of the Rams' numerous draft hits in 2024 at No. 39 overall, finishing his rookie campaign with 44 tackles (20 solo) including 8.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

  • Rams' Braden Fiske: Looking explosive

Fiske has resumed participating in on-field workouts and said Tuesday he feels in a "really good spot" in his recovery from offseason knee surgery, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports. Fiske required a minor offseason procedure to address the knee injury he sustained during the Rams' NFC divisional-round loss to the Eagles, but a video posted by the team Tuesday shows the 2024 second-round pick already demonstrating mobility and burst during his workouts. Fresh off an impressive debut campaign in which he led all rookies with 8.5 sacks during the regular season, Fiske appears on track to enter his second NFL campaign at full strength and remain a difference maker for Los Angeles' defense.

  • Rams' Chris Paul: Rams add fifth-round linebacker

The Rams selected Paul in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 172nd overall. Paul (6-foot-1, 222 pounds) is perilously light for a linebacker and will need the other parts of his prospect profile to offset that deficiency. The good news is that the former Mississippi and Arkansas standout might have enough other traits to overrule the challenges that come with his safety-like frame. More specifically, Paul's 4.63 speed pairs with quick processing to keep Paul locked onto the ball carrier, making Paul a candidate to blow up a gap before the blocker can get to it. At worst, Paul should prove to be a useful rotational linebacker and special teams player in the NFL.

  • Rams' Ty Hamilton: Rams add Round 5 defensive lineman

The Rams selected Hamilton in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 148th overall. Hamilton (6-foot-3, 299 pounds) looks like a nice value for the Rams this late, because he stood out while starting the last two years for Ohio State and demonstrated plus athleticism at the Ohio State Pro Day. Hamilton logged a 4.95-second pro day 40 while jumping 32 inches in the vertical, so Hamilton should have legitimate pass-rushing potential in the NFL. The downside to Hamilton is that he might not have the anchor and reach to hold gaps in run defense, but as a one-gap attacker Hamilton should fit in fine.

  • Rams' Troy Reeder: Reunites with Los Angeles

The Rams re-signed Reeder (hamstring) to a one-year contract Thursday. Reeder earned a starting role at inside linebacker to kick off the 2024 campaign, but a hamstring injury sustained Week 7 limited him to just six appearances (all starts) on the season. Now heading into his age-31 season, the decision to re-sign with Los Angeles provides Reeder another chance at earning a starting role on defense. Nate Landman, Omar Speights and Jaylen McCollough all represent competition at the linebacker position.

  • Rams' Ahkello Witherspoon: Staying in L.A.

The Rams re-signed Witherspoon to a one-year deal Wednesday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. Witherspoon will remain in Los Angeles after spending the last two seasons of his career with the Rams. He's coming off a 2024 campaign in which he recorded 36 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble while playing in 15 total games between the regular season and playoffs. He's expected to remain one of the Rams' top cornerbacks in 2025.

  • Rams' Larrell Murchison: Returns to Rams

The Rams re-signed Murchison (foot) to a one-year contract Friday. Murchison missed the entire 2024 season after suffering an arm injury prior to the season and then a foot issue the day he returned to practice in October. He's presumably going to be healthy enough for a normal offseason and will serve as interior defensive-line depth for Los Angeles. Murchison has 44 career games of experience under his belt and has been with the Rams since being claimed off waivers from the Titans in December 2022.

  • Bills' Michael Hoecht: Suspended six games

Bills general manager Brandon Beane said Friday that Hoecht has received a six-game suspension for violation of the NFL's policy regarding performance-enhancing substances, Matt Parrino of The Syracuse Post-Standard reports. Hoecht and fellow free-agent signing Larry Ogunjobi will both miss the first six regular-season games of the 2025 campaign due to suspension, a development that hurts Buffalo's defensive-line rotation. With Hoecht unavailable to kick off the coming season, the Bills may be motivated to pursue additional depth behind Greg Rousseau and A.J. Epenesa.

He's the fourth defender the Panthers have added in free agency, joining safety Tre'von Moehrig, defensive end Patrick Jones, and defensive tackles Bobby Brown and Tershawn Wharton. Expect Rozeboom to serve as one of Carolina's top inside linebackers in 2025, potentially serving as the signal-caller for the team's revamped defense.

He made 31 starts off the edge for Los Angeles and totaled 13.5 sacks, including 3.0 as a reserve last season. In Buffalo, Hoecht will provide depth off the edge behind Greg Rousseau and A.J. Epenesa.

Brown signed with the Panthers on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Brown had a career year in 2024, recording 44 total tackles and one pass defended across 17 regular-season appearances (16 starts). He's the third free-agent defender the Panthers have added Monday, joining safety Tre'von Moehrig and defensive end Pat Jones. Brown will look to fortify a Carolina defensive line that allowed the most yards per carry (5.2) in the NFL in 2024.

  • 49ers' Tre Tomlinson: Claimed by San Francisco

The 49ers claimed Tomlinson off waivers Friday. Tomlinson was waived by the Rams on Wednesday, quickly finding a new home just a couple of days later. The cornerback hasn't appeared in a game since 2023 after spending this past season on injured reserve with Los Angeles while nursing an undisclosed injury. If he sticks around San Francisco in 2025, Tomlinson will provide the 49ers with a depth option in their secondary and another body on special teams.
