Royce Freeman: Inks to Cleveland's practice squad
The Browns signed Freeman to the practice squad Tuesday.
Freeman spent time with the Cowboys this offseason, but he wasn't able to stick to the team's final roster. Now, he gets an opportunity in Cleveland, where, with Pierre Strong (hamstring) considered week-to-week, a chance to contribute could come as early as Sunday versus the Giants.

Royce Freeman: Doesn't make 'Boys' 53-man roster
Freeman was released by the Cowboys on Tuesday.
Freeman's chances of making the Cowboys' 53-man roster appeared slim due to the fact that he was the third running back behind Malik Davis and Deuce Vaughn entering Saturday's preseason finale against the Chargers. Freeman finished the preseason with 67 rushing yards on 15 carries while adding one catch for seven yards. The 2018 third-round pick should garner some interest from teams looking to add a veteran running back to their roster or practice squad.

Cowboys' Royce Freeman: Third back on field Saturday
Freeman carried the ball eight times for 35 yards and caught his only target for seven yards in Saturday's 26-19 preseason loss to the Chargers.
With Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle sitting out Dallas' preseason finale, Malik Davis and Deuce Vaughn both saw carries before Freeman did and posted better yards per carry averages on the day, which bodes poorly for the veteran's chances of being on the roster for Week 1. Freeman has been barely hanging on in the NFL for a few years now, and his 77 carries for the Rams in 2023 was his highest total since 2019. While he still appears capable of handling a depth role in a backfield, the Cowboys may elect to go with their younger homegrown options instead.

Cowboys' Royce Freeman: Solid showing in win
Freeman (groin) rushed seven times for 32 yards in the Cowboys' 27-12 preseason win over the Raiders on Saturday night.
Freeman was able to suit up after having suffered a groin injury earlier in the month, and he finished second in rushing yardage after coming into the game behind starter Malik Davis. Freeman should have a solid chance of securing the No. 3 running back job given his experience, as well as the fact Davis didn't exactly impress with his starting opportunity Saturday (five carries, 14 yards).

Cowboys' Royce Freeman: Leaves practice with injury
Freeman left Monday's practice with what appeared to be a groin injury, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
The veteran running back was having a good camp, but any lengthy absence for Freeman could cost him standing in Dallas' backfield. Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott remain the favorites to handle the biggest roles in a potential committee. Freeman's availability for Sunday's preseason game against the Rams should become clear over the next few days.

Cowboys' Royce Freeman: Well positioned for backup role
Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones suggested Monday that Freeman is in good position for a roster spot and backup role, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
Jones said Freeman is "a great 2-3 combination in terms of what he can do as a backup" and "a great complement to [Ezekiel Elliott]". Jones then mentioned Rico Dowdle and Malik Davis having to "battle it out," which could be taken as a sign that Freeman's roster spot is more secure than Dowdle's even though the latter was the No. 2 RB in Dallas last season. It's only the first week of training camp and a lot could change before Week 1, but it seems Freeman is at least making an impression with his combination of size, special teams experience and passing-down competence. Explosive running isn't something he really offers, but that's also probably true of most of the other Dallas running backs.
