Hurricanes' Spencer Martin: Sent down to minors
Martin was reassigned to AHL Chicago on Wednesday.
Martin effectively cost himself the backup job in Carolina after going 2-3-1 with a 4.38 GAA and .825 save percentage in his last six outings. Even with Pyotr Kochetkov now healthy after suffering a concussion, the Hurricanes were concerned enough about Martin's play that they signed journeyman backstop Dustin Tokarski to an NHL deal Monday and brought him up to the NHL in favor of Martin on Wednesday.

Martin allowed five goals on 28 shots in two periods of action Saturday in a 6-0 loss to Florida. Yaniv Perets surrendered one goal on seven shots in relief.
Carolina didn't show up Saturday, and Martin has been struggling. He has surrendered 10 goals in his last two outings, both of which were losses against the Panthers. The Canes played a full 60-minute game and staged a third-period comeback to earn the win. Martin earned his second consecutive win after taking over the starter's reins due to injuries to both Frederik Andersen (knee) and Pyotr Kochetkov (concussion). There have been rumors that the Canes might go out and trade for a veteran netminder to help Kochetkov this season, but Martin's recent winning efforts could quash that notion fast. Getting his first start since Pyotr Kochetkov (concussion) was injured, Martin didn't exactly do much to inspire confidence that he can handle the workload of a No. 1 goalie. Carolina was facing a 3-1 deficit heading into the third period before the offense erupted, and the 29-year-old netminder still gave up a tying tally to make it 4-4 with just over five minutes left before the Hurricanes put the game away. Martin stopped one shot in overtime and two of three shootout attempts, taking the loss in a 5-4 shootout defeat to the Blue Jackets after entering the game for Pyotr Kochetkov (upper body).
Martin's outing was a short one, and Sean Monahan had the lone shootout tally to decide the game. The Hurricanes were able to score in each period, and Martin did his part to quiet a tough offense. This was Martin's first career shutout as well as his first win over three appearances in 2024-25. Martin hadn't played at any level in over two weeks, and the Hurricanes traveled to Colorado earlier Saturday due to bad weather in Denver, so there were some extenuating circumstances in this performance. Still, the 29-year-old netminder didn't make a great first impression in his season debut. Martin will likely continue to serve as backup to Pyotr Kochetkov moving forward, at least until Frederik Andersen (lower body) can get back in action. If Martin is still with the big club next weekend, he may be called on for a start in a back-to-back at home -- the Hurricanes face the Senators next Saturday and the Blues next Sunday after wrapping up their road trip this week.
