Hockey Club's John Marino: Earns first helper of season
Marino logged an assist, two blocked shots and a plus-2 rating in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Blues.
Marino has been eased back into action after missing the first 42 contests of the season due to a back injury. That ended Saturday, as he was called on for 24:14 of ice time in the absence of Mikhail Sergachev (upper body). Marino is likely to stick in a top-four going forward, though he's more of a shutdown defenseman than a big point producer -- his career high is 26 points in 56 outings in 2019-20, his rookie year. His helper Saturday was his first point of the season to go with two shots on net, three blocked shots and a plus-2 rating over three appearances.

Hockey Club's John Marino: Closing in on return
Marino (back) will be a game-time decision Tuesday against Montreal, Cole Bagley of KSL Sports reports.
Marino has yet to suit up in 2024-25 after undergoing lower-back surgery in October. The right-shot blueliner was traded from the Devils to Utah in June of 2024. Marino will take the ice in warm-ups Tuesday, and if he is able to play, he'll slot in on the third pairing. The 27-year-old would be a welcomed addition for a club that has dealt with major injuries to its blue line, including Sean Durzi (shoulder), who has only played in four games this season.

Hockey Club's John Marino: Removed from IR
Marino (back) was activated from injured reserve Tuesday, per the NHL media site.
Utah moved Dylan Guenther (lower body) to injured reserve in a corresponding move. Marino appears ready for his season debut versus Montreal on Tuesday despite being considered a game-time decision. He had four goals, 25 points, 57 shots on net, 89 blocked shots and 39 hits in 75 regular-season appearances with New Jersey in 2023-24.

Hockey Club's John Marino: Upgraded to day-to-day
Head coach Andre Tourigny said Monday that Marino (back) is now considered day-to-day, Cole Bagley of KSL Sports reports.
Marino hasn't yet played during the 2024-25 season due to a lower-back injury, and while he remains on injured reserve, he appears to be closing in on a return. He's been practicing in a regular jersey over the past week, and Tourigny said that Marino will return during Utah's upcoming four-game homestand, which begins Tuesday against Montreal and runs through next Monday, when Utah will take on the Jets. Given Marino's lengthy absence to begin the year, he'll likely be eased into action once he's cleared to return, but he'll likely be able to make his season debut within the next week.

Hockey Club's John Marino: Sheds non-contact jersey
Marino (back) participated in Monday's practice session in a regular jersey, Cole Bagley of KSL Sports reports.
Marino has been sidelined since the start of the regular season due to a lower-back injury that required surgery in late October. However, his participation in Monday's practice in a regular jersey is certainly an encouraging sign. The 27-year-old will likely need some time to ramp up given his lengthy absence, but he seems to be trending in the right direction.

Hockey Club's John Marino: Undergoes surgery
Marino has undergone successful lower-back surgery and is projected to miss the next 3-4 months, Utah announced Wednesday.
Marino hasn't played in 2024-25 because of the injury. He had four goals and 25 points across 75 appearances with New Jersey in 2023-24. Marino is expected to serve in a top-four capacity once he's healthy, though it's possible he'll be eased into the lineup after missing so much time.

Hockey Club's John Marino: Months away from season debut
Marino (upper body) is months away from playing, Cole Bagley of KSL Sports reports Friday.
Marino had four goals, 25 points and 41 PIM in 75 appearances with New Jersey in 2023-24, but he hasn't been able to play yet this season due to the injury. He's on injured reserve, though Marino probably won't get moved to long-term injured reserve only because Utah already has plenty of cap flexibility, so putting him on LTIR might not provide the franchise with a benefit at this time. When Marino is healthy enough to play, he will probably serve in a top-four role.

Marino (upper body) remains in Utah on Thursday to be examined while his teammates begin a four-game road trip with a contest against the Islanders on Thursday. He's expected to miss "weeks," Cole Bagley of KSL Sports reports.
Marino was put on injured reserve Monday and missed Utah's season-opening 5-2 victory over Chicago on Tuesday. He had four goals and 25 points in 75 contests with the Devils in 2023-24. Marino will probably serve in a top-four capacity once he's healthy.

Hockey Club's John Marino: Will miss Opening Night
Marino (upper body) will not be in the lineup against the Blackhawks on Oct. 8, Craig Morgan of ALLCITY Network reports.
Marino managed 25 points in 75 games last season despite not having a power-play role with the club. Utah has yet to provide a more concrete timeline for the 27-year-old blueliner to return to action, so fantasy players will likely have to wait for more information to become available. In the meantime, Michael Kesselring could be a candidate for the Opening Night roster.

Hockey Club's John Marino: Unavailable Friday
Marino (upper body) will miss Friday's preseason contest against Vegas, according to Belle Fraser of The Salt Lake Tribune.
Marino had four goals and 25 points in 75 regular-season games with New Jersey in 2023-24. Provided he's healthy, the 27-year-old defenseman will likely open the campaign in a top-four capacity, but he probably won't see use on the power play.

Hockey Club's John Marino: Upgraded to day-to-day
Marino (upper body) is now considered day-to-day ahead of Friday's matchup with Vegas, Craig Morgan of ALLCITY Network reports.
Marino is far from a lock to suit up in Friday's tilt. In fact, the team could hold him out of another preseason game or two just to ensure he is back to 100 percent. Regardless of when he suits up, the blueliner should be back in time for Opening Night against Chicago on Oct. 8. Considering Marino has never topped the 30-point threshold, there is little reason for fantasy players to expect anything more than that out of him this season.

Marino (upper body) will be back in action Tuesday against Toronto, per Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site.
Marino has played 71 games for the Devils this season, recording four goals and 21 assists to go along with 55 shots. He will likely slot into the first or second defensive pairing versus the Maple Leafs.
