Maple Leafs' Marshall Rifai: Shifts to waivers
Rifai was put on waivers Sunday, according to Chris Johnston of The Athletic.
Rifai supplied two goals and 19 points in 57 contests for AHL Toronto during the 2023-24 regular season. He could see playing time with the Maple Leafs in 2024-25, assuming he doesn't get claimed by another team.

Maple Leafs' Matt Murray: Goes on waivers
Murray was moved to the waiver wire Sunday, per Chris Johnston of The Athletic.
Murray agreed to a one-year, $875,000 contract with the Maple Leafs in July after being limited to three regular-season appearances with AHL Toronto in 2023-24 due to bilateral hip surgery. If he doesn't get claimed by another team, he will continue to work his way back in the minors.

Maple Leafs' Mitch Marner: Focused and highly motivated
Marner set up two power-play goals in Saturday's 3-2 exhibition win over the Red Wings.
Marner came into camp focused and highly motivated, resulting in a great showing in the preseason. He is in the last year of his contract and is prepared to negotiate during the season. Maner is in a position of strength in negotiations based on his Selke-caliber play and elite scoring. Marner has 639 points, including 194 goals, in 576 games since coming into the league in 2016-17.

Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Plays whole game for first time
Woll made 18 saves in a 3-2 win over the Red Wings on Saturday in preseason action.
He played the whole game, and his best came during a five-on-three power play for the Red Wings in the first period. Woll had played only 31:45 in the previous five preseason games, with no explanation from new head coach Craig Berube on the reason. Woll is set to share the crease with newcomer Anthony Stolarz in 2024-25. Still, Woll's talent level should shine through and force more starts as long as he stays healthy.

Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews: Back in action Saturday
Matthews potted a power-play goal and added an assist on the man advantage in Saturday's 3-2 preseason win over Detroit.
Matthews had been nursing an upper-body injury since playing in Toronto's exhibition opener against Ottawa on Sept. 22, but he didn't skip a beat in Saturday's matchup. His slap shot tied the game in the second, and he found John Tavares in the slot for the winner early in the third. Matthews has put up at least 106 points in two of his last three campaigns, and he came within a goal of the 70-goal threshold in the 2023-24 regular season.

Maple Leafs' Jake McCabe: Likely to practice Monday
McCabe (upper body) is likely to practice Monday, Joshua Kloke of The Athletic reports.
McCabe didn't play in Saturday's preseason finale versus the Red Wings, but the Maple Leafs likely took a precautionary approach with his injury. Assuming he can practice without further issues, the 30-year-old defenseman will probably suit up for Opening Night on Wednesday versus the Canadiens.

Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Starting Saturday
Woll will defend the home crease versus Detroit on Saturday, Mark Masters of TSN reports.
Woll will play the entirety of Toronto's preseason finale. The 26-year-old goaltender will battle for the No. 1 job with Anthony Stolarz, leading to the duo potentially splitting the net this season. Woll was 12-11-1 with a 2.94 GAA and a .907 save percentage in 25 regular-season games in 2023-24.

Maple Leafs' Jake McCabe: Not playing Saturday
McCabe (upper body) won't be in Saturday's lineup versus Detroit.
McCabe could be questionable for Opening Night on Wednesday in Montreal. The solid defenseman had a career-best eight goals and 28 points in 73 regular-season games in 2023-24. McCabe also registered 219 hits and 129 blocked shots.

Maple Leafs' Nicholas Robertson: Out of action Saturday
Robertson (upper body) will not play Saturday versus Detroit.
The good news is that Robertson partook in morning practice and could be ready to go Opening Night in Montreal on Wednesday. Robertson had 14 goals and 27 points in 56 regular-season games in 2023-24 and is expected to improve upon those numbers this season.

Maple Leafs' John Tavares: Back in lineup Saturday
Tavares (lower body) will return to the lineup Saturday against Detroit,
Tavares has missed the last week of action but will be ready for the start of the season. The 34-year-old center had 29 goals and 36 assists in 80 regular-season games with the Maple Leafs in 2023-24. Tavares will occupy a top-six role and see time on the first power-play unit during the 2024-25 campaign.

Maple Leafs' Alex Steeves: AHL bound
Steeves was placed on waivers Friday.
The Maple Leafs will demote Steeves to AHL Toronto if he passes through waivers. Steeves played one game in the NHL last season, going pointless in 10:14 of action Feb. 13. Steeves was an offensive star at the AHL level in 2023-24, scoring 27 times while adding 30 assists in 65 regular-season games with the Marlies.

Maple Leafs' Anthony Stolarz: Blanks Wings on Thursday
Stolarz stopped all 30 shots he faced in Thursday's 2-0 preseason win over the Red Wings.
It was an impressive effort from Stolarz against a Detroit squad that featured all its top stars. The 30-year-old netminder is expected to begin the 2024-25 campaign as the backup to Joseph Woll in the Toronto crease, but Woll has never played more than 25 games in an NHL season due to various injuries. If he has trouble staying healthy again, Stolarz could get a chance to prove his outstanding numbers last season for the Stanley Cup champion Panthers (2.03 GAA, .925 save percentage in 27 appearances) can hold up with a bigger workload.

Maple Leafs' Nicholas Robertson: Dealing with upper-body injury
Robertson is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, David Alter of The Hockey News reports Friday.
Robertson was absent from practice Friday after potting both of Toronto's goals the night before in a 2-0 preseason win over Detroit, and he's dealing with an upper-body issue ahead of Saturday's preseason finale rematch against the Red Wings. It's not yet clear whether his injury will impact his availability for Opening Night against Montreal on Wednesday. When he's healthy, the 23-year-old will likely take on a bottom-six role for the Maple Leafs.

Maple Leafs' Jake McCabe: Considered day-to-day
McCabe won't skate during Friday's practice session due to an upper-body injury, and he's considered day-to-day.
While the exact nature of McCabe's injury isn't clear, it's discouraging to see him held out of practice ahead of Saturday's preseason finale against the Red Wings. It's not yet clear whether he'll suit up against Detroit, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him held out to avoid risking his health ahead of Opening Night against Montreal on Wednesday.

Maple Leafs' Calle Jarnkrok: Still hampered by injury
Jarnkrok was held out of practice Friday due to a lower-body injury.
Jarnkrok has been in and out of the lineup during preseason due to a lingering upper-body injury. The 33-year-old center should probably be considered questionable ahead of Saturday's preseason finale versus the Red Wings, and more likely will be given the time to get healthy ahead of Opening Night versus the Canadiens on Wednesday.

Maple Leafs' Anthony Stolarz: Tending twine Thursday
Stolarz will protect the road goal versus the Red Wings in Thursday's preseason game, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
Stolarz is set for his third game of the preseason. The 30-year-old has given up just two goals on 26 shots over his first two appearances. Stolarz is set to begin 2024-25 as backup to Joseph Woll, but it's possible the Maple Leafs ultimately give their goalies roughly equal workloads.

Maple Leafs' Dennis Hildeby: Heading to AHL
Hildeby was reassigned to AHL Toronto on Thursday.
Hildeby started Saturday's preseason game against the Canadiens and saved 26 of 27 shots, but he'll still begin the 2024-25 regular season in the minors. He was called up several times last year but didn't see any playing time in the NHL, and he'll likely spend most of this season with the AHL club.

Maple Leafs' Nick Abruzzese: Waived by Toronto
Abruzzese was placed on waivers by the Maple Leafs on Thursday with the intent to reassign him to AHL Toronto.
Abruzzese hasn't appeared in an NHL game since he made two appearances for the Maple Leafs during the 2022-23 season. Assuming he clears waivers, he'll head back to the AHL, where he'll likely spend most of the 2024-25 campaign.

Maple Leafs' Alex Steeves: Back in lineup Thursday
Steeves (lower body) will return to the lineup Thursday in Detroit.
Steeves has been out a week with the injury. Steeves scored the lone goal in a 2-1 preseason loss versus Ottawa on Sept. 24 and has not played since then. The 24-year-old inked a one-year, two-way contract during the offseason and he is expected to start the season at the AHL level with the Marlies, barring a flurry of injuries to the Maple Leafs up front. He was without a point in his one regular-season game with Toronto in 2023-24, but managed 27 goals and 57 points in 65 regular-season appearances with the Marlies.

Maple Leafs' Calle Jarnkrok: Playing Thursday
Jarnkrok (lower body) will be in the lineup versus Detroit on Thursday.
Jarnkrok played in 52 regular-season contests for the Leafs last season in which he registered 10 goals, 11 assists and 92 shots while averaging 15:16 of ice time. Barring any setbacks, the 33-year-old Swede appears set to fill a top-six role for Toronto, which could see him challenge for the 40-point threshold for the first time in his career.
