Ross Hodge led the North Texas Mean Green to the NIT semifinals, but now he'll be tasked with leading the West Virginia basketball team back to prominence. Hodge will have to fill out his coaching staff while building a West Virginia basketball roster capable of competing in the Big 12 and on the national stage. Hodge's staff is expected to feature many of the individuals who worked with him the past two seasons at North Texas. Hodge was 19-15 overall and 10-8 in the AAC in his first season with the Mean Green, and 27-9 overall and 14-4 in the conference this past season.
Regardless of who joins Hodge, the coaching staff's priority will be constructing a new West Virginia basketball basketball lineup via the college basketball transfer portal. Top West Virginia basketball lineup updates
Hodge will have to hit the ground running after all three recruits who signed in November asked to be released from their letters of intent. The only WVU players with eligibility who aren't in the portal are Abraham Oyeadier, Haris Elezovic, Ofri Naveh and Dylan Jay. Just three scholarship players on the Mountaineers' roster right now, and only one of them scored a single point last season.
An avenue Hodge could explore is recruiting talent from North Texas to follow him to WVU. One player that could make that transition is junior forward Brenen Lorient. The 6'9" forward averaged 11.9 points per game last season, which ranked second on the team. He made 56.9% of his field goals, which could give the Mountaineers' a much-needed scoring threat. He's familiar with Hodge's scheme and staff, so if he wants to take a step up in competition, WVU could be the perfect landing spot for him.
