2025 Masters live updates: All eyes on Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy as 89th tournament continues Friday

The azaleas are in full bloom, and while conditions may have been wet Monday, the 2025 Masters is off and running with practice rounds complete and Round 1 in the books. There are 95 golfers competing in this 89th playing of the tournament, including the best players in the world and a handful of top amateurs. They have all convened at Augusta National Golf Club seeking to don a green jacket and achieve a career milestone at the most pristine course in the world.

Eyes have been firmly focused on Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, the clear favorites entering this Masters. The reigning green jacket holder and winner of two of the last three Masters, Scheffler has not gotten off to the hottest start this season, but he is nevertheless capable of making history by conquering Augusta National yet again. The opposite is true for McIlroy, who remains a Masters victory away from completing a long-sought-after career grand slam. In the midst of an 11-year major drought, Rory makes news one way or another every time he steps foot on this hollowed ground.

Best of all for fans tuning in from across the nation and around the globe? You will be able to consume more Masters golf than ever before with expanded coverage from CBS Sports. Whether watching at home, on the go or at the office (don't worry, we won't tell anyone) -- there will be no shortage of action for you to view from around Augusta National.

Tee times, pairings for Round 3 at the Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Moving Day at the Masters has arrived, and it has come with plenty of strong pairings set to make their mark at Augusta National Golf Club. The day will end with 18- and 36-hole leader Justin Rose bringing up the rear alongside a man who was in this position a season ago in Bryson DeChambeau.

Holding three U.S. Open titles between them, the two will vie for the rights of a green jacket, but they are far from the only major winners with eyes on green. Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy finds himself in weekend contention at the Masters for the first time in a long time. Finally playing his way into the year's first major championship, the man who needs only a green jacket to fill out his major collection finds a spot in the penultimate pairing with Canadian Corey Conners.

Round 2 takeaways: Rory McIlroy roars, Scottie Scheffler sputters late

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Hype. So few times does the billing live up to it. Expectations are so high that they can only fall short -- even more so when it comes to something which has been circled for so long. The longer the build up, the higher the hopes. Not often does the appointment viewing reach the level originally thought.

While that can be the case for most events, it is clear through the first two rounds of the 2025 Masters that this one may well be the one when the year is over. The first major championship of the season has delivered every aspect of what makes a great golf tournament great across its first 36 holes.

Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson among stars who missed cut

The top of the leaderboard at the 2025 Masters is a who's who of the best golfers on the planet this season. Almost all of the biggest stars in the game are playing like it through two days at Augusta National. The top 20 includes all four current major winners, 18 total major championships won, four current or former world No. 1s golfers and 14 of the top 25 players in those Official World Golf Rankings. However, despite the star power at the top, there are some big names that will not be making their way to the weekend at this year's Masters after falling short of the cut line at +2.

Langer, 67, ends run after 41st Masters tournament

Bernhard Langer's first Masters start came in 1982. On Friday afternoon of the 2025 Masters, he walked off the 18th green for the final time in his 41st appearance. It was nearly a storybook week for the 67-year-old in his sendoff from Augusta National as a competitor as he remained in the mix for the weekend all the way until his final hole.

McIlroy rewrites 2025 Masters story with sensational 66

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- As the wind began to calm down ever so slightly, Rory McIlroy started running downhill in lockstep with the curvatures of Augusta National. The Northern Irishman who limped his way to the finish line just under 24 hours prior was bouncing about as if nothing had occurred. The patrons adopted him as one of their own, and despite having gone a decade without a major championship while coming excruciatingly close at various venues -- none more pristine than this one -- McIlroy made them believe he would be enshrined on these grounds soon enough.

DeChambeau balances patience, aggression to soar up leaderboard

After some light rain fell overnight, the greens at Augusta National softened up for the morning wave of second-round tee times at the 2025 Masters, presenting low-scoring opportunities. There is no one in the golf world happier to get a green light to be more aggressive than Bryson DeChambeau, and after a strong start to his Masters with a 3-under 69 on Thursday, DeChambeau came out firing on Friday to make another move up the leaderboard.

Rory McIlroy disappointment leads Masters takeaways after Round 1

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- There was a moment in the second round of the 2024 Masters where Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy stood mere feet apart in a literal sense. They were worlds apart in the figurative sense. Up on the hill on No. 11 peering down on the surface below, the two stood as wind whipped around Amen Corner amid a crispy, crusty day of difficult scoring.

Scheffler flighted his approach to the fat of the green and walked away with par. McIlroy's attempt ballooned into the high heavens; he could only watch as it sunk to a watery grave, his green jacket chances along with it. McIlroy went on to sign for a 77. Scheffler went on to claim his second green jacket in three years only a couple days later.

McIlroy stood atop that same hill Thursday amid a leaderboard that was then topped by the same man. Only a year removed from his latest disappointing start to his Masters quest, McIlroy looked worlds apart from that version of himself ... until he did not.

Masters tee times, groupings for Round 2 on Friday

The opening 18 holes of the 2025 Masters produced an incredible leaderboard heading into Friday at Augusta National. Scottie Scheffler delivered a bogey-free 68 to continue asserting his dominance at the Masters with Ludvig Åberg matching him at 4 under as he got off to a fast start in Augusta, Georgia for the second straight year. Bryson DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton and Jason Day are among the others in the top 10, and a huge group that includes some heavy hitters is at 1 under in T11, still feeling like they're in the mix. The biggest name missing from that list is Rory McIlroy, who had it to 4 under before a disastrous close with two double bogeys dropped him back to even par with a ton of work to do.

Masters leaderboard breakdown: Justin Rose on top after Round 1

Entering this week of the 2025 Masters, so much of the conversation surrounded the potential for an all-time duel at Augusta National between the top two players in the world, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. For much of Thursday, those two titans of the game looked like they were going to deliver on that promise -- and then some. Scheffler posted a bogey-free 68 to match Corey Conners for the early clubhouse lead at 4 under, and McIlroy was tied with them well into his second nine before disaster struck at the par-5 15th. More on that in a bit. The only man that could top that trio was Justin Rose. The Englishman will take a three-shot lead into Friday's second round in his 20th appearance at the Masters. Rose was sensational Thursday, moving it as deep as 8 under through 16 holes before giving one back at the 18th, his only bogey on the round. Check out the full Round 1 leaderboard breakdown.

Scheffler on pace for historic Masters triumph after calm, effective 68

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The two-time Masters champion was sensational in the first round of his second title defense at Augusta National Golf Club. Navigating a breezy, stress-inducing day without a square on his scorecard, Scottie Scheffler added four circles along the way to sign for an opening 4-under 68. The score was good enough to match Corey Conners' early first-round lead in the clubhouse. While it may only be 18 holes, it was an important 18 holes for Scheffler, who also sat inside the top three after Thursday's action in both 2022 and 2024 -- the years of his two green jacket victories.

Dunlap makes wrong kind of Masters history not seen in 69 years

Augusta National showed its teeth Thursday despite ideal weather conditions as the course played extremely firm and fast for the first round of the 2025 Masters. While there were a few low scores posted, big numbers lurked around every corner. Unfortunately for Nick Dunlap, he seemed to find each and every one of those spots in his first competitive round at this pristine course.

Ken Griffey Jr. working as photographer at Augusta National

Patrons walking the Augusta National grounds during the 2025 Masters might see a familiar face behind the camera of one on-course photographer. That's because Baseball Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. is working as a credentialed photojournalist throughout the tournament. Griffey has found a second passion in photography after hitting the cover off the baseball for 22 MLB seasons. Since retirement, he has been spotted working at several different sporting events over the years.

Fred Couples, 65, dazzles with hole-out eagle

One of the best parts of the Masters is seeing the legendary champions of the past still play and compete, even if only for a couple rounds. In 2023, Fred Couples made the cut at 63 years old, an incredible feat, and he is threatening to do the same in the 2025 Masters at age 65 with some spectacular shots, including an immense hole-out eagle from 191 yards.

Rory McIlroy gets advice from Jack Nicklaus on Augusta National

AUGUSTA, Ga. — No one has slipped on the green jacket more than Jack Nicklaus. A full 50 years removed from winning his fifth Masters before ultimately finding his way into the winner's circle a total of six times, the Golden Bear maneuvered his way around Augusta National Golf Club like no other. While he was able to add six to his closet, Rory McIlroy still searches for his first. Leaving no stone unturned, McIlroy sought the advice of Nicklaus recently as the two sat down for lunch last week to discuss the strategy involved in executing around Augusta National.

Honorary Starters: Nicklaus, Player, Watson get 89th Masters underway

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The 2025 Masters has begun, and it did so just as others preceding it have -- with the annual tradition of three luminary figures and former Masters champions hitting tee shots as the Honorary Starters. Six-time Masters champion Jack Nicklaus, three-time champion Gary Player and two-time champion Tom Watson opened play early Thursday morning at a brisk Augusta National Golf Club just after the sun has risen. Nicklaus has been an Honorary Starter since 2010, while Player joined him in 2012. Watson was the most recent addition to the group in 2022, and he struck an opening tee shot for the fourth time Thursday morning. This year's Masters marks the 50-year anniversary of Nicklaus' fifth green jacket and 13th major title.

One of these nine golfers will win the Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The 89th playing of the Masters is upon us, and 95 players still have a chance to be the lucky soul to slip on the green jacket come Sunday. While the last few Masters have gone the way of tournament favorites like Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler (not once, but twice), the 2025 edition of this tradition unlike any other feels a bit more wide open. Much like the wind in Amen Corner, questions swirl around the top players in the world and make this year's Masters all the more difficult to figure out. From a field of 95, which we ranked top to bottom earlier this week, we have whittled the contender list down to the nine most likely to join golf's most exclusive company this weekend.

The 2025 Masters will begin, as others preceding it have, with the annual tradition of three luminary figures and former Masters champions hitting tee shots as the Honorary Starters. Six-time Masters champion Jack Nicklaus, three-time champion Gary Player and two-time champion Tom Watson will once again open play at Augusta National Golf Club with their shots off the first tee. Nicklaus has been an Honorary Starter since 2010, while Player joined him in 2012. Rory McIlroy's 4-year-old daughter drains incredible long putt

Less than 24 hours before the pressure ratchets up significantly at Augusta National Golf Club, the annual Masters Par 3 Contest offers players an opportunity for a bit of a reprieve. The competition often comes second to golfers having fun with family and friends. In fact, many players intentionally disqualify themselves as scoring competitors by having their kids or significant others -- wearing the iconic white Masters caddie onesies -- hit a tee shot or putt on their behalf. One of the highlights of the 2025 Masters Par 3 Contest came courtesy of Rory McIlroy's 4-year-old daughter, Poppy, who poured in a long downhill put on the 9th hole by just nudging the ball to get it on the right line with gravity doing the rest.

Debutant golfer Nico Echavarria wins Masters Par 3 Contest

While the true value of the Par 3 Contest is that it allows players to relax and enjoy the day before the tournament pressure ratchets up, there is a competition at play. This year's event ended in a playoff between Nico Echavarria and J.J. Spaun after both shot a 5-under 22. Ultimately, it was Echavarria who won with a birdie on the second playoff hole (both coming at No. 9) as Spaun made a bogey. Check out the moments and highlights.

2025 Masters weather forecast

2025 Masters week got off to a bit of a tough start, atmospherically, as Monday's practice round was called just before noon ET due to inclement weather in the area. That gave way to sunny skies and cool conditions Tuesday and Wednesday, and as the week progresses, the weather forecast projects to be much better than the extremely difficult conditions players battled through in 2024.

Scottie Scheffler eyes legend status while seeking form that made him dominant

The 2025 Masters is headlined by the two top-ranked golfers in the world chasing history. Rory McIlroy will make his 11th attempt at capturing the career grand slam, but this year's try brings renewed optimism amid the best start to a season of his career with two wins already in his bag ahead of his annual visit to Augusta National Golf Club. Scottie Scheffler, meanwhile, has an opportunity to declare himself one as of the all-time greats at the Masters by collecting back-to-back green jackets and a third in four years.

Only Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods have gone back-to-back at Augusta National, while only Nicklaus has won three green jackets in a four-year span.

Tree removals have Augusta National looking, sounding different

It is hardly rare to see the course at Augusta National Golf Club undergo changes ahead of the Masters. The club is constantly evaluating ways to adjust its playing surfaces to present new challenges for players. Exiting last year's tournament, there were not many significant changes planned; however, when Hurricane Helene swept through the area in September and devastated much of the Southeast, there were repairs and alterations that needed to be made. ANGC chairman Fred Riley on Wednesday discussed the larger hurricane recovery effort, which focused primarily on helping the community of Augusta, Georgia.

Ranking the entire Masters field from 1-95

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- When the task to rank the entire 2025 Masters field came across the desk, the initial thought was that there was no way anyone would parse the difference between who checked in No. 43, and let's say, No. 67. Then perspective prevailed with the realization that, in this day and age, anything that can be debated will be debated.

That is to say this endeavor has been undertaken with the utmost seriousness, not only for that one person who cares deeply about where each individual in this 95-man field stacks up against one another but because the Masters is the preeminent major championship on the golf calendar, one that we have all had circled since last August.
