  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Ceding first base to Hiura

Farmer is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins. After Michael Toglia was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday, Farmer initially looked to be the next man up at first base, but the Rockies instead appear content to keep the 34-year-old in a utility role. Farmer will be on the bench for a second straight matchup with a right-hander while recent call-up Keston Hiura garners another start at first base.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Idle for series finale

Farmer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets. Farmer had started the last three games, all at different positions (second base, designated hitter and first base), but he went 0-for-8 at the dish during that stretch. First base appears to be Farmer's clearest path to consistent playing time after the Rockies demoted Michael Toglia to Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday. Keston Hiura was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move, and he'll get the nod at first base Sunday in his Rockies debut.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Looks to be primary first baseman

Farmer went 0-for-3 with a strikeout Saturday against the Mets. Farmer's performance didn't stand out, but he started at first base on the same day that Michael Toglia was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque. Farmer also occupied the position when Toglia got a breather from May 21 to May 23, signs that combine to suggest that Farmer will serve as Colorado's primary first baseman for the time being. He has only a .236/.274/.365 line across 157 plate appearances for the season.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: On bench for second straight

Farmer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees. After a stretch of four straight starts, Farmer now finds himself on the bench for a second day in a row. The Rockies seem content to let Michael Toglia work through his struggles at the plate and aren't yet to ready to demote him to Triple-A Albuquerque, so despite a recent uptick in playing time, Farmer doesn't look like he'll take over as the team's everyday first baseman just yet.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Playing time picking up

Farmer will start at first base and bat seventh in Thursday's game against the Phillies. Farmer will make his fifth start in six games and his second in a row at first base. Though Farmer has gone 5-for-19 with two home runs and two doubles over his previous five games, his uptick in playing time seems to be mostly a result of first baseman Michael Toglia beginning to lose his grip on an everyday role rather than Farmer earning it. The 8-41 Rockies are already well removed from playoff contention and have more of a long-term investment in the 26-year-old Toglia, but his 41.7 percent strikeout rate in May has made it increasingly more difficult for interim manager Warren Schaeffer to let him work through his struggles.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Drives in four runs Saturday

Farmer went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double and four total RBI in Saturday's 14-12 victory versus Arizona. Farmer had two big hits in the victory -- a two-run homer in the third inning that tied the score 6-6 and a two-run double in the sixth that pulled the Rockies within a run. The veteran infielder's long ball was his second in as many games after he began the campaign with no homers through his first 35 contests. Farmer doesn't have an everyday role with the Rockies, as he started Saturday for just the second time across the team's past five games.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Tallies first homer

Farmer went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk Wednesday against the Rangers. Farmer has started four of Colorado's last seven games, splitting time between second base and shortstop. He started at the former position Wednesday and hit second in the order. While he managed to tally his first home run of the season, Farmer has only two hits across 17 at-bats in his last seven games.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Batting second Wednesday

Farmer will start at shortstop and bat second in Wednesday's game against the Rangers. Back in the lineup Wednesday for just the second time in five games, Farmer will occupy a prominent spot in the batting order while typical No. 2 hitter Jordan Beck slides down to the three hole. Farmer has produced a meager .601 OPS over 117 plate appearances on the season, so barring a big performance Wednesday, he's unlikely to see regular opportunities in a premium spot in the lineup.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: On bench Wednesday

Farmer is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers. Adael Amador will get the nod at second base Wednesday, but Farmer still may rank as the Rockies' preferred option at the keystone. Farmer had been included in the lineup in three of the team's previous four games, while Amador started just once during that stretch.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Losing playing time

Farmer is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta. Though the Rockies remain without Ezequiel Tovar (hip), Thairo Estrada (wrist), Aaron Schunk (groin) and Tyler Freeman (oblique) in the middle infield, Farmer no longer looks to be in the mix for regular playing time at second base or shortstop. He'll be on the bench for the fourth time in seven games, with the Rockies prioritizing Adael Amador ahead of him at the keystone and Alan Trejo at shortstop.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Out of Colorado lineup

Farmer is not in the lineup for Monday's game versus Atlanta. Farmer's playing time has been slipping lately, as he's now been in the lineup for just half of the Rockies' last eight games and just one of their last four tilts versus right-handers. Alan Trejo is at shortstop and Adael Amador is at second base in Monday's series opener.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Not in Friday's lineup

Farmer is absent from the lineup for Friday's game versus the Reds. The Rockies will go with Adael Amador at second base and Aaron Schunk at shortstop. Farmer is 0-for-16 at the plate over his last five contests.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Resting during Game 2

Farmer isn't in the lineup for the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Royals. Farmer went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in the first game of Thursday's twin bill, and he'll now watch the beginning of Game 2 from the bench. His absence will open up shortstop for Aaron Schunk to pick up a start and bat ninth against Michael Lorenzen.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Not in Colorado lineup

Farmer is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest in Kansas City. Farmer has essentially been an everyday player for the Rockies this season, but he's now been out of the lineup for two of the last three games, including two straight versus righties. Aaron Schunk will be at shortstop and Adael Amador will be at second base for Colorado.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: On bench for nightcap

Farmer is not in the starting lineup for Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader with the Nationals. Farmer will take a seat after he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in the team's 3-2 loss in Game 1 on Sunday. Aaron Schunk will take over at shortstop and bat ninth in Game 2 versus Washington.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Knocks in two

Farmer went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored Wednesday against the Dodgers. Farmer has gained most of his playing time at second base in the absence of Thairo Estrada (wrist), but he's recently seen work at first base and shortstop while also serving as the designated hitter. He's quietly been one of the few bright spots for the Colorado offense to begin the season, tallying multiple base hits in six of his last 11 starts. Farmer has nine doubles with four RBI and two runs scored in that span.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Exiting starting nine Sunday

Farmer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics. Farmer will take a seat for the series finale after manning second base in the previous two contests while going 4-for-8 with three doubles, one run and one RBI. Tyler Freeman will get the nod at the keystone Sunday, but Farmer still appears to be the Rockies' preferred option.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Not in starting nine

Farmer is not in the lineup for Thursday's game in Philadelphia. Farmer has been the Rockies' primary second baseman while Thairo Estrada (wrist) is recuperating, but he'll begin Thursday's matinee on the bench. Tyler Freeman is at the keystone and batting ninth for Colorado.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: Taking seat Sunday

Farmer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays. Tyler Freeman will get the nod at second base in the series finale after Farmer occupied the keystone in the first two games at Tampa Bay, going 1-for-6 with two RBI. Farmer and Freeman could form a timeshare at second base until Thairo Estrada (wrist) is ready to make his season debut.

  • Rockies' Kyle Farmer: In line for second base job

Farmer is expected to handle the bulk of the second-base reps for the Rockies to begin the season while Thairo Estrada (wrist) is sidelined, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Estrada will miss 4-to-8 weeks after being diagnosed with a fractured right wrist, so Farmer will be given a lengthy look. The 34-year-old slashed only .214/.293/.353 last season with the Twins, but he could be relevant in deeper leagues while playing half his games at Coors Field. If Farmer struggles out of the gate, it could open the door for prospect Adael Amador to get another look.
