• Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Tapped for Opening Day

  Manager Aaron Boone announced Friday that Rodon will start Opening Day against the Brewers on March 27, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. The left-hander will step in as the Yankees' Opening Day starter with Gerrit Cole (elbow) lost for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Rodon struggled during his first year in the Bronx during 2023 with a 6.85 ERA in 14 regular-season starts, but he rebounded last season and finished with a 3.96 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 195:57 K:BB across 175 regular-season innings.

• Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Candidate to start Opening Day

  Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Max Fried "might not line up" to be the team's Opening Day starter, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports, making Rodon a possibility for the assignment. Gerrit Cole was the logical choice to start Opening Day for New York until he hurt his elbow and was diagnosed as needing Tommy John surgery. Fried would make sense to step in for the Opening Day honor, but the team may elect to not tinker with his schedule. If Fried isn't assigned the role, Rodon would be next in line given his standing as the Yankees No. 2 starter sans Cole and Luis Gil (lat). Rodon hasn't pitched in a spring game since Feb. 27, and it isn't clear when he'll make his next Grapefruit League appearance, but the Yankees haven't indicated that he's dealing with an injury or illness. Boone indicated Tuesday that the team is expected to announce an Opening Day starter in the next few days.

  Rodon allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 2.2 innings in a Grapefruit League game against Philadelphia on Thursday. Rodon struck out three batters in a scoreless first inning, but he then allowed a two-run homer to Johan Rojas in the second. The veteran lefty pitched into the third, departing with two outs after giving up a run-scoring double. Rodon has yielded six runs over 5.1 frames through two spring starts, but he's building up his pitch count nicely, throwing 57 pitches Thursday.

  Rodon tossed 2.2 innings against Toronto in Grapefruit League play Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out one batter. It wasn't a great exhibition debut for Rodon, though he wasn't hit particularly hard -- all five knocks against him were singles. The veteran lefty did log a promising workload with 48 pitches, and his changeup usage was up from his norm last season, which could be an indication of his plans to adjust for the coming campaign after opponents belted 21 homers off his four-seamer last year. Rodon is expected to slot third in the Yankees' rotation behind Gerrit Cole and Max Fried.

Rodon's most recent start was in Game 2 of the ALDS on Oct. 7, when he took the loss against Kansas City. In that contest, the left-hander gave up four runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out seven batters over 3.2 innings. Rodon posted a 3.96 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 195:57 K:BB over 175 frames during the regular season and led New York with 16 victories. The Guardians haven't yet announced their starter for the first game of the ALCS.

Rodon served up a third-inning homer to Tyler O'Neill, the fifth long ball he's allowed over the past four starts, but otherwise held the Red Sox in check to collect his 15th win. Rodon recorded one out following a leadoff double in the sixth but was subsequently pulled after 88 pitches, rendering him two outs shy of a quality start. It was the seventh time in his last 10 starts that Rodon has allowed two runs or fewer over five or more innings, and he has posted a 3.18 ERA across 56.2 innings with 74 strikeouts over that stretch. The lone hit run on Rodon's line was a solo home run by Josh Jung in the fourth inning. The Yankees pulled ahead 2-1 in the seventh, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead, denying Rodon his 15th victory of the year. It was still an excellent performance for the southpaw, who has alternated between good and poor outings since the start of August. He's allowed 13 runs over 32 innings in that span and now has a 4.19 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 172:49 K:BB through 152.1 innings overall. Rodon's next start is projected to be at home versus the Royals.

Rodon fell behind on his second pitch of the game when he served up Dylan Crews' first major-league homer. Things didn't get much better for the southpaw from there, as he gave up another run in the first frame, two more in the second and a fifth and final run in the fourth. Rodon managed to induce 16 whiffs and notch a healthy eight punchouts, but he also had five bases stolen on his watch and was bit by a wild pitch and a balk. The veteran hurler has been frustratingly inconsistent of late -- he's hurled two scoreless outings among his past five starts, but in the other three appearances during that stretch he's given up a combined 12 runs over 14.1 innings.

Rodon has given up three runs or less in five straight outings, posting a 2.54 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 38:13 K:BB through 28.1 innings over that stretch. Rodon put together another excellent start to help the Yankees take the series in Boston. His only blunder of an inning came in the fourth when he allowed back-to-back home runs to Rob Refsnyder and Connor Wong but was backed by plenty of offense from his guys. Rodon has now exceeded six innings in consecutive starts for the first time since early June and has now allowed three runs or less in 17 of his 22 starts this year. The 31-year-old owns a 4.34 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 129:36 K:BB in 120.1 innings and will aim for his third straight win when he takes the ball at home versus the Blue Jays over the weekend.
