Ivan Herrera's reputation as an offensive-minded catcher held true in 2024. Among Cardinals hitters to accrue at least 250 plate appearances, Herrera led the club with his .369 xwOBA. However, while he graded out fine as a framer and blocker of balls in the dirt, Herrera was so inept at throwing out opposing base stealers (he caught just four of them in 59 tries) that he was leap-frogged on the depth chart by the defensively-superior Pedro Pages during the stretches Willson Contreras was hurt. Contreras will move off catcher full-time in 2025, leaving Herrera and Pages to split starts behind the dish. Herrera's offensive upside makes him a fine fantasy sleeper, but he'll need to show some level of improvement with his throwing if he wants to outpace Pages in playing time.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Set to miss at least four weeks

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Monday that Herrera will miss at least four weeks after being diagnosed with a bone bruise in his left knee, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Testing on Herrera's knee came back negative for structural damage, but the bone bruise is going to cost the young catcher a month of action, at minimum. Pedro Pages will take on the primary catcher duties for the Cardinals while Herrera is out, and Yohel Pozo has been called up from Triple-A Memphis to serve as Pages' backup.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Goes on IL with knee inflammation

The Cardinals placed Herrera (knee) on the 10-day injured list Monday. Herrera tweaked his left knee while running the bases in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader versus the Red Sox. He was diagnosed with inflammation after tests on his knee came back negative, but Herrera has since headed back to St. Louis to be evaluated further before the Cardinals determine how long he might be out. While Herrera is sidelined, Pedro Pages will serve as the Cardinals' primary catcher.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Headed for IL

Herrera (knee) is expected to be placed on the 10-day injured list ahead of Monday's game against the Pirates, John Denton of MLB.com reports. After exiting the first game of Sunday's doubleheader versus the Red Sox due to left knee inflammation, Herrera was sent in for further testing. According to manager Oliver Marmol, those tests returned clean, but Herrera will still need time to heal from the knee injury and will go on the IL. Pedro Pages drew the start behind the plate in the nightcap of Sunday's twin bill and will likely get the lion's share of starts at catcher in Herrera's absence. Herrera had gotten off to a hot start to the season, slashing a blistering .381/.458/1.048 with four home runs, 11 RBI and six runs through 24 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Leaves early with knee inflammation

Herrera was diagnosed with left knee inflammation after exiting in the third inning of the first game of Sunday's doubleheader versus the Red Sox, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Herrera went 0-for-1 with a walk before leaving the contest after he appeared to injure his knee while running the bases. Pedro Pages came off the bench to replace Herrera in the bottom of the third inning and will finish out the game behind the plate while also drawing the start at catcher in the nightcap. The Cardinals seem to be viewing Herrera as day-to-day, though he could be at risk of landing on the IL if he's not able to return to the lineup within the next few games.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Departs with apparent injury

Herrera was removed from Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Red Sox due to an apparent leg injury, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Herrera worked a walk during the bottom of the third inning but suffered an injury while running the bases and required assistance to leave the field. The 24-year-old was already likely to sit for Game 2 after starting the matinee, but his availability beyond Sunday is now in question. Pedro Pages stepped in behind the plate and would operate as St. Louis' primary catcher should Herrera be forced to miss time.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Idle Saturday

Herrera isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game versus Boston, John Denton of MLB.com reports. After slugging four home runs and tallying nine RBI over his last two games, Herrera will take a seat Saturday to give Pedro Pages a chance to start behind the plate.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Will try throwing from knees

Herrera will start throwing from his knees in hopes that it will help him better control the running game, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Baserunners are 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts against Herrera this season and 60-for-64 since the beginning of last year. The throwing problems have led to Herrera sometimes being removed from games he starts in the later innings when the Cardinals need to prioritize defense. Herrera clubbed three home runs in Wednesday's game versus the Angels, and the Cardinals want to keep his bat in the lineup as often as possible. Improving his throwing will help ensure that.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Sitting out Tuesday

Herrera is not in the lineup for Tuesday's contest against the Angels. Herrera -- who sports a 1.055 OPS in the early going -- has now drawn three starts to Pedro Pages' two in the first five games. Pages will do the catching for Matthew Liberatore on Tuesday.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Expected to catch on Opening Day

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Monday that he's planning to start Herrera at catcher and bat him sixth Opening Day versus the Twins, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The lineup the Cardinals are using in Monday's exhibition tilt against Triple-A Memphis -- one that features Herrera behind the plate -- is the same one Marmol is eyeing for the opener. Herrera has been in a competition with Pedro Pages for the St. Louis catcher job, and it appears Herrera will get the first crack at it. What the ultimate breakdown in playing time between the two catchers will be over the duration of the season isn't clear.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Set to split time at catcher

Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said Wednesday that Herrera and Pedro Pages will share playing time at catcher next season, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Willson Contreras is moving into a first base/designated hitter role, clearing the way for Herrera and Pages to handle catching duties. Herrera is much more intriguing of the two from an offensive standpoint, having slashed .301/.377/.417 in 85 games over the last two seasons with the Cardinals. However, his defense -- and particularly his throwing -- have drawn scrutiny, to the point that Pages leapt him on the depth chart down the stretch.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Homers in Thursday's loss

Herrera went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Thursday's 10-8 loss to the Rockies. This was Herrera's second homer in his last four games, though he hasn't seen steady playing time in that span. He got a start at designated hitter Thursday with Pedro Pages behind the dish. Herrera has hit well but not for much power this year with a .298/.368/.427 slash line, five home runs, 27 RBI, 37 runs scored, 12 doubles and five stolen bases over 71 contests.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Racks up three hits

Herrera went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored in Wednesday's 10-5 win over the Pirates. Herrera is batting .320 (8-for-25) over eight games in September, though he's been in the backup role for much of the last week. Pedro Pages continues to see a slight edge for playing time behind the dish. Herrera has done enough to avoid being completely ignored with a .288/.354/.387 slash line, three home runs, five stolen bases, 23 RBI and 32 runs scored over 66 contests this season.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: On bench again Wednesday

Herrera is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds. Herrera had a slight edge over Pedro Pages in playing time in the first week after Willson Contreras (finger) got hurt and landed on the injured list. However, the playing time has recently been tilting in favor of Pages, who has now started six of the last eight contests. With Thursday's series finale being an afternoon game, Herrera will likely be back in the lineup that day.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Resting Saturday

Herrera isn't in the Cardinals' lineup for Saturday's game against the Mariners, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Herrera has gone 5-for-15 with three RBI across his last five games, but he'll sit down for a second consecutive contest Saturday while Pedro Pages catches for Kyle Gibson and bats seventh.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Not in Monday's lineup

Herrera is not in the lineup for Monday's game in Milwaukee. In nine games since Willson Contreras (finger) went on the 10-day injured list, Herrera has started five games at catcher for the Cardinals, while Pedro Pages has garnered four starts. Pages will handle the catching duties for the series opener versus the Brewers.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Sitting Friday

Herrera is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Yankees. Herrera had started three of the Cardinals previous four games, but he'll give way to Pedro Pages behind the plate Friday. Since being called up Sunday, Herrera is 3-for-12 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Added to big-league roster

The Cardinals recalled Herrera from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. The 24-year-old will join the Cardinals as Willson Contreras heads to the injured list due to a fractured finger. Herrera should split playing time behind the plate with Pedro Pages while Contreras is sidelined.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Dealing with left shoulder sprain

Herrera has been out of the lineup for Triple-A Memphis due to a left shoulder sprain, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Herrera has not played for Memphis since Aug. 4 against Durham. Since being activated from the 10-day injured list July 12, he's slashing .275/.431/.425 with 11 walks, one home run and four RBI across 51 minor-league plate appearances. It's not clear if the 24-year-old catcher will need another stint on the IL.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Activated, sent to Triple-A

The Cardinals activated Herrera (back) from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Memphis. Herrera has been shelved since June 22 due to soreness in his lower back, and although he's now healthy, the 24-year-old won't rejoin the big-league roster. Pedro Pages will handle backup catching duties behind Willson Contreras in St. Louis.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Progressing through rehab program

Cardinals manager Oli Marmol said Saturday that Herrera (back) experienced no pain after Friday's rehab outing with Triple-A Memphis, John Denton of MLB.com reports. As the designated hitter Friday, Herrera went 1-for-3 with one home run, three RBI and one walk. Marmol noted that Herrera will start behind home plate soon, and a return to the majors will hinge on the 24-year-old's ability to start at catcher on back-to-back days. Before landing on the injured list June 22 with lower-back tightness, Herrera was slashing .279/.340/.378 with three home runs and 19 RBI over 191 major-league plate appearances.
