Clarke Schmidt took a step forward in 2023 as he joined the Yankee rotation, but was really beginning to shine in 2024 until a right lat strained derailed his season for three months. Schmidt, prior to that late May injury, was 5-3 with a 2.52 ERA and a 19.0 percent K-BB percentage and had reduced the home run rate that plagued him in 2023. Schmidt returned in September to make five starts, but the rust showed and he was not as crisp nor was he able to even garner a win in any of the five outings. Schmidt did make a repertoire adjustment from 2023, as he further leaned into the success of his new cutter to make it his primary weapon of choice. Schmidt threw cutters, sweepers, sinkers and knuckle-curves to both righties and lefties at near equal levels. That mixture helps keep hitters off-balance enough to put Schmidt in the top 20th percentile for avoiding barrels and better than average in avoiding hard contact. The lat strain could have been his body's reaction to his workload nearly tripling from 2022 to 2023, so the rest that the injury offered him in 2024 should help Schmidt get another strong start out of the gate. As long as he continues to utilize his quartet of offerings, as he has to both righties and lefties, the pieces are in place for him to combine the ingredients of success in previous seasons into one delicious 2025 season.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Likely to start season on IL

    Schmidt (shoulder) is likely to begin the season on the 15-day injured list, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. Schmidt felt good during a 32-pitch live batting practice session Thursday and recovered well Friday. However, he admitted that taking his first turn in the regular-season rotation would "handcuff" the club since he's not fully stretched out, putting extra pressure on the bullpen. As long as he continues to trend in a positive direction, Schmidt's stint on the IL should be brief. With the right-hander out, both Carlos Carrasco and Will Warren would be part of the Yankees' Opening Day rotation.

    Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Schmidt (shoulder) will not be built up to 75-to-80 pitches for the start of the season, Jack Curry of YES Network reports. Curry adds that the Yankees are likely to be cautious with Schmidt, so it's possible, if not probable, that he won't be ready for his first turn in the rotation April 3 versus the Diamondbacks. If Schmidt is indeed not ready, both Carlos Carrasco and Will Warren could open the season in the Yankees' rotation. Schmidt will throw a live batting practice session Thursday as he works his way back from a shoulder issue and a potential absence for the righty could be brief if he avoids setbacks.

The Yankees had left open the possibility that Schmidt would start Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta, but the team has opted to have him throw in a more controlled setting instead. Schmidt should be able to get in a start after that, whether it's in Grapefruit League play or in a minor-league game. The 28-year-old has now struck out seven batters in back-to-back outings that have both resulted in losses. Schmidt was faring well against a tough Baltimore lineup until Anthony Santander knocked a solo homer off the right-field foul pole in the sixth, ending the New York starter's night at an even 100 pitches.
