Player Outlook
Jake Mangum has been toiling in the minor leagues since 2019, but he's yet to experience The Show. He's spent the last three seasons at Triple-A, playing for three different organizations. The Rays acquired him from the Marlins, and after he produced a .317/.357/.442 line with 20 steals for the Durham Bulls, the club game him a spot on their 40-man roster, shielding him from the Rule 5 draft. Mangum can play all three outfield positions, which could help him make his debut this season as a 29-year-old. His asset is putting the bat on the ball, but since he's been older than most at his level for several seasons, it's unclear how well his contact skills may translate. The fact Tampa Bay thinks enough of Mangum to protect him is sufficient enough to put him on your radar, but not enough to draft him, save for the deepest of leagues.

  • Rays' Jake Mangum: Racking up steals

Mangum went 1-for-4 with a stolen base Sunday against the Rangers. Mangum has started six of eight games since being recalled to the majors March 29. He's earned the playing time by maintaining a five-game hitting streak, also chipping in four RBI, three runs scored and four stolen bases in that span. Mangum isn't likely to be much of a power contributor, but he's shown the ability to chip in everywhere else in the box score.

  • Rays' Jake Mangum: Adds three more hits Tuesday

Mangum went 3-for-4 with a double, a steal, two RBI and two runs in Tuesday's win over the Pirates. Mangum is on a torrid stretch at the plate in his last two games, going 7-for-8 with four RBI and three runs while adding three steals. The 29-year-old hit .305/.351/.431 at Triple-A Durham the last two seasons and is making an early statement that he belongs in the show.

  • Rays' Jake Mangum: Perfect at plate with two steals

Mangum went 4-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases in Monday's 6-1 win over Pittsburgh. Mangum tallied his first major-league RBI with a two-run single in the fourth inning, also adding two steals in the victory. The switch-hitting outfielder has made his way onto Tampa Bay's roster due to Josh Lowe (oblique) being sidelined, and Monday's effort could earn him additional reps in the outfield while Lowe is on the shelf.

  • Rays' Jake Mangum: Recalled to big club

The Rays recalled Mangum from Triple-A Durham on Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. At 29 years old, Mangum will finally get a chance to make his MLB debut following Josh Lowe's (oblique) move to the injured list. Mangum spent all of last season in Triple-A, slashing .317/.357/.442 with 56 RBI and 20 stolen bases across 428 plate appearances. He'll provide the Rays with some additional outfield depth until Lowe returns.

  • Rays' Jake Mangum: Beginning season at Triple-A

The Rays optioned Mangum to Triple-A Durham on Wednesday. Along with Kameron Misner and Chandler Simpson, Mangum was one of three players vying for a backup outfield role that was sent to the minors Wednesday. The 29-year-old Mangum is still waiting to make his MLB debut, but the Rays thought highly enough of him to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft and add him to the 40-man roster this winter after he slashed .317/.357/.442 with six home runs and 20 stolen bases over 428 plate appearances for Durham last season.

  • Rays' Jake Mangum: Gains spot on 40-man roster

The Rays selected Mangum's contract from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Mangum hit .317/.358/.442 with six homers and 20 steals with Durham this season. He'll turn 29 in March and has yet to see any action at the big-league level, but the Rays felt it necessary to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft.

  • Marlins' Jake Mangum: Acquired as PTBNL

The Marlins have acquired Mangum from the Mets as the player to be named later in the Jeff Brigham-Elieser Hernandez trade, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Mangum, 26, posted a .804 OPS in the minors last season while splitting most of his time between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse. The switch-hitting infielder/outfielder could compete for a reserve role with the Marlins next season.
