Crews made 17 starts at leadoff hitter and six starts in the No. 2 spot last year, in addition to some starts further down the lineup. However, with CJ Abrams expected to lead off, Crews projects to hit second. While Crews is a good hitting prospect, it's his stolen-base potential that is so alluring for 2025, as he stole 12 bases in 31 games last year and his 5.6 percent attempt rate ranked seventh in the majors, per Statcast.

Crews picked up a pair of hits, an RBI and a steal before the second inning was done Thursday against the Nationals. After a streak of three straight games without a hit, Crews now has multi-hit games in back-to-back days. While his slash line of .241/.308/.448 leaves room for improvement, Crews has racked up three homers, eight RBI, six steals and seven runs in his first 15 games since being promoted in late August. It's a small sample size, but Crews has started in every game since his promotion and should continue to see regular playing time down the stretch.

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft, Crews has slashed .272/.343/.456 with 13 home runs and 25 stolen bases between Double-A Harrisburg and Rochester, but he's improved to a .908 OPS so far in August. Crews has split his time between center field and right field of late and could be used in both spots with the Nationals.

• Nationals' Dylan Crews: Moving on to Triple-A

  The Nationals promoted Crews from Double-A Harrisburg to Triple-A Rochester on Monday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Crews missed a week and a half of action with a hamstring injury and was sitting on a .664 OPS at the end of April, but he picked up the pace thereafter to earn his way to Rochester. From May 1 onward, the 22-year-old outfielder slashed .292/.359/.474 while contributing three home runs and 13 stolen bases and striking out at an acceptable 19.2 percent rate. In Rochester, he'll be part of an outfield that will soon include another elite prospect in James Wood (hamstring), who is expected to begin a rehab assignment with one of the Nationals' lower-level affiliates this week before returning from the 7-day injured list.

  Crews is slashing .310/.379/.569 through 17 games in May for Double-A Harrisburg with one homer, four steals, eight runs and 16 RBI. The second overall pick in the 2023 Draft is finally showing a spark at the plate for Harrisburg after batting just .207 (25-for-121) through his first 32 games at Double-A dating back to last year. Crews has also gotten his strikeout rate under control, posting a 21.2 percent mark in May after flailing away at 37.0 percent in April. The 22-year-old outfielder still isn't tapping into his raw power consistently, but if James Wood gets promoted to the majors soon, Crews could get bumped up to Triple-A Rochester at the same time.

The team is being extra cautious with him, but he did run yesterday and appeared to have no issues. Crews' eighth-inning blast left the yard so quickly, it initially looked like a double when it hit above the fence in left field and bounced back onto the grass. The second overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft is beginning to find a groove at Double-A, going 8-for-20 (.400) over the last five games with a double, two homers, eight RBI and a 1:3 BB:K. James Wood is scorching hot at Triple-A right now, and if he forces his way onto the big-league roster, Crews could get an early promotion of his own to take Wood's place on the Rochester roster.

The long ball was the first of the year for Crews, and his first at Double-A after he struggled in 20 games at the level to close out last season. He's batting .278 (5-for-18) through four games for Harrisburg with a 1:7 BB:K, and a quick climb up the ladder to Triple-A remains a distinct possibility if he gets hot at the plate. A big-league debut late in the 2024 campaign is still plausible for Crews, but the Nationals will likely try to preserve his rookie eligibility for 2025.

There have been small blemishes on his line -- he's gone 1-for-3 on stolen-base attempts and has struck out 10 times against only three walks -- but nothing that raises any serious concerns about his future. The 21-year-old appears headed for a very quick ascent through the Nationals' system, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see Crews finish out the season at High-A if he continues to be unchallenged at his current level.
