The future of the Raiders took a big hit that could force a step back on Friday night. Rookie quarterback Derek Carr suffered a concussion and bruised (or worse?) ribs after getting turned into the deli meat of a Larry Webster-and-turf sandwich.

With just 5:40 to play in the game, the Lions defensive end blew past backup tackle Jack Cornell, walked down Carr from his blindside and smothered him into the ground

Carr was slow to get up and routinely pointed to his midsection as if he sustained a rib injury.

“He’s got sore ribs,” coach Dennis Allen said. “I don’t know exactly what his ribs are but the concussion was why he was out of the game."

So that's good news! Carr looked fairly sharp, completing 9 of 16 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown before the injury.

It certainly begs a question as to what Carr was still doing in the game: it's the preseason, the game was over, he's a rookie quarterback -- albeit one who could fight Matt Schaub for the starting job -- and he's being protected by backups.

You want the kid to get action and you can't play or coach to avoid injury in the NFL. But Cornell was doing his best turnstile imitation on the play where Carr got hurt; there's got to be some recognition that Carr had seen enough action to call it a day.

Schaub securing the Week 1 starting job looks pretty secure at this point.
