SmackDown started with the "Trial of Roman Reigns" and concluded with Jey Uso anointing himself as judge, jury and executioner. Jey Uso is on the warpath after Jimmy Uso was stretchered out of the arena following a brutal assault by The Bloodline.

The Usos defeated Reigns and Solo Sikoa at Money in the Bank this past weekend. It marked the first time that Reigns had been pinned in three-and-a-half years. What was perceived as the fall of Reigns' empire instead spurred the most ruthless, vindictive version of Reigns to date.

Friday's show also featured Hall of Famer Edge's first match in nearly two months, a United States championship title defense and in-ring action featuring former world champion AJ Styles.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.

Jey Uso demands trial by combat after The Bloodline's vicious assault

Reigns was forced to endure chants of "you got pinned" by the MSG crowd. The Usos presented the audience with a video package highlighting Reigns' cruelest moments. Reigns took offense to the video, lamenting how Reigns carried the weight of the family on his back. He shunned Jey Uso for highlighting his lowest moments, saying that his daughter would see that footage without understanding the sacrifices that led to them. Reigns said he was done with The Bloodline and the responsibility that comes with it. Reigns removed the necklace from around his neck and -- after some hesitation -- placed it around Jey Uso's neck. Reigns tossed his undisputed WWE universal championship to the floor, dropped to his knees and bowed to Jey Uso while crying. Jey Uso stepped towards Reigns and was greeted with a low blow.

Jimmy Uso lunged at Reigns, attacking him until Sikoa tossed him aside. Sikoa stared at the necklace for a while before picking it up, alluding to his own desire to be "Tribal Chief." The crowd urged Sikoa to "put it on" but Reigns stared down his cousin. Sikoa and Reigns then laid out the twin brothers before trapping Jey Uso in between the ropes. Sikoa restrained Jey Uso, forcing him to watch Reigns violently beat Jimmy Uso. Jey Uso eventually broke free but was also brutally assaulted by Reigns and Sikoa.

Following a commercial break, Jimmy Uso was shown being stretchered into an ambulance with Jey Uso by his side.

Paul Heyman, after Friday's main event match, informed Reigns that Jey Uso had returned to the arena and was hunting down "The Head of the Table." Reigns told the world that he would be waiting for Jey Uso in the ring.

Jey Uso entered through the crowd, flung himself over a barricade and laid out Sikoa. Jey Uso cracked Reigns with a steel chair to the ribs and back. Sikoa snatched the chair from Jey Uso but ate a super kick for his efforts. Reigns fled to the stage, leaving Sikoa to absorb cathartic chair shots from a vengeful Jey Uso. SmackDown closed with Jey Uso -- holding Reigns' world title -- calling for a one-on-one match. Jey Uso promised to be Reigns' "judge, jury and executioner."

The Bloodline continues to age like a fine wine. WWE ran a rare, compelling 30-minute opening angle that never felt stale. Reigns spoke with conviction and you could almost sympathize with the pressure he felt to elevate his family. Almost, but not quite. He's a egomaniac, after all. The visual of Reigns passing the torch to Jey Uso sent the crowd into a frenzy and the ruse was well executed. The beatdown on Jimmy Uso was more severe than what WWE typically produces. It gave Jey Uso further motivation and further escalated "The Bloodline Civil War." Teasing Sikoa's ambitions to lead and Reigns abandoning him were great wrinkles. We appear to be on a collision course to Reigns vs. Jey Uso at SummerSlam. It's possible Reigns foreshadowed the result. If Reigns won't pass the torch, Jey Uso will take it. Rarely do we get a story with such depth and nuance. That was one of the best opening and closing segments of the year. Grade: A+
