College football scores, NCAA top 25 rankings, Week 6: No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 8 UNC hold off feisty opponents

Though No. 1 Clemson's game against No. 7 Miami was the national headliner on Saturday, a pair of other top-10 ACC teams were in action, and both overcame tests before holding on to win as No. 5 Notre Dame beat Florida State 42-26 and No. 8 North Carolina outlasted No. 19 Virginia Tech 56-45. Both the Fighting Irish and Tar Heels will be candidates to move up in the polls after No. 4 Florida lost to No. 21 Texas A&M.

After two weeks off due to a game wiped out by a COVID-19 outbreak followed by a scheduled bye, Notre Dame hoped to pick up where it left off in a 52-0 throttling of South Florida on Sept. 19. But a Florida State team starting its third quarterback of the season in Jordan Travis provided some resistance. Ultimately, Notre Dame's offense was too much for the Seminoles as the Fighting Irish racked up 554 yards, including 353 on the ground.

The Tar Heels also found their stride offensively as they finished with 656 total yards, including 399 on the ground. It remains to be seen whether either team can hang with Clemson, but the Fighting Irish and Tar Heels are now alone with the Tigers as the last unbeaten teams in the ACC after another wild day of college football.

End 3Q: No. 1 Clemson 35, No. 7 Miami 10

All things considered, you feel pretty good entering the fourth quarter if you're a Clemson fan. Miami's managed to muck it up decently well and take the shine off, but the Tigers are on track to cover comfortably. And, thankfully for the sake of college football, Trevor Lawrence appears to be fine after taking a shot to the…midsection.

End 3Q: No. 5 Notre Dame 42, Florida State 26

FSU went 75 yards on seven plays to score to open the half and cut it to 35-26. Notre Dame struck back to keep a nice cushion heading to the fourth. Probably a moral victory to take away here if you're FSU.

End 3Q: No. 2 Alabama 42, Ole Miss 35

Nick Saban is quite displeased with his defense. But his offense has punted just once all game. Rebels have the football as we head to the fourth in what is easily the best game of the night. Already over 1,000 yards of total offense.

Half: No. 5 Notre Dame 35, Florida State 20

The Irish offense is rolling. Kyren Williams has 130 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Chris Tyree has 64 yards rushing and a TD on three carries. Meanwhile, Ian Book is 11-of-16 for 125 yards and two TDs through the air. 365 total yards and just one penalty for Notre Dame.

The only reason FSU is in it is because of an ND fumble and muffed punt that led to the Seminoles' first two scores. But give FSU QB Jordan Travis some credit. He is 7-of-15 for 114 yards and a TD in his first start. Has also run 10 times for 50 yards and a TD.

Half: No. 1 Clemson 21, No. 7 Miami 10

Bizarre ending to the first half as Miami blocks a last-second FG attempt from Clemson, scoops and scores to make it a ballgame after Clemson dominated most of the half. Dabo Swinney took responsibility for trying to kick it in the first place considering it was a 60-yarder. The Tigers are clearly the better team, but that play will at least make the third quarter worth watching.

Half: Ole Miss 21, No. 2 Alabama 21

644 total yards in the first half. Most surprising is Ole Miss running the football so well. Averaging 6.7 yards per rush.

END 1Q: Florida State 17, Notre Dame 14

Notre Dame gifted the Seminoles their first 10 points with turnovers that set up FSU in great position. But FSU and its third starting quarterback of the season, Jordan Travis, earned the latest touchdown at the end of the first quarter. The bad news for FSU is that the Fighting Irish posted 210 yards in the first quarter.

Early 2Q: No. 1 Clemson 14, No. 7 Miami 0

The Tigers are clicking offensively. Trevor Lawrence goes 11-of-13 for 112 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter, and Travis Etienne punches one in on the first play of the second quarter.

END 1Q: No. 2 Alabama 7, Ole Miss 7

Najee Harris was about to give Bama a 14-7 lead when Ole Miss stripped the football out in a scrum at the goal-line. Looked like his forward progress may have been stopped. But that's not what the officials ruled. So the second quarter will begin with Ole Miss driving in a tie game.

Final: No. 13 Auburn 30, Arkansas 28

Anders Carlson gets redemption. After missing a 34-yarder that would have given the Tigers the lead with 2:45 left, Auburn's defense stands and gives him another shot. Carlson drills it from 39.

But it wasn't without controversy. Bo Nix spiked the ball backwards, which should have been a fumble. However, it was ruled an incomplete pass (and intentional grounding) which allowed Auburn to retain possession and kick the game winner.

Still a tremendous effort from Arkansas, which trailed 17-0 and roared back in sloppy conditions. This call will be discussed for a while, though.

Final: Kansas State 21, TCU 14

The Wildcats have now won three in a row, including two as underdogs, since dropping their first game of the year against Arkansas State. K-State's defense was everywhere against TCU and was able to win without injured QB Skylar Thompson. Watch out: Chris Klieman is getting the absolute most out of his team.

Final: No. 3 Georgia 44, No. 14 Tennessee 21

Sheer domination from the Bulldogs in the second half after they trailed 21-17 at the break. This defense is legit. Georgia's victory sets up a huge showdown with Alabama next week. Winner will be the last unbeaten team in the SEC, assuming the Crimson Tide handles Ole Miss tonight.

Final: No. 15 BYU 27, UTSA 20

The Cougars survive a gamely effort from UTSA by recovering an onside kick with 1:15 remaining. Looked like the Roadrunners might have come up with it, but BYU emerged from the scrum with the football and improves to 4-0.

Final: No. 24 Iowa State 31, Texas Tech 15

Iowa State's defense holds Texas Tech to just 270 total yards. The Red Raiders got things going a bit with backup QB Henry Colombi in the second half. But they couldn't overcome a slow start. Three straight quality Big 12 wins for Iowa State after the Cyclones lost to Louisiana in the opener. Brock Purdy completes 32-of-43 passes for 302 yards and 2 TDs for Iowa State. Breece Halls runs for 135 yards and two touchdowns 27 attempts. Next up after a bye week for ISU is a game with Oklahoma State that could have serious Big 12 title implications.

End 3Q: No. 13 Auburn 20, Arkansas 18

The Razorbacks trailed 17-0 early but have scored three TDs since (with a missed PAT and two failed 2-point attempts) to make this a good one. But the Tigers are driving and will have a chance to make it a two-possession game to begin the fourth.

Kansas State is up 21-7 over TCU after a pick-six in the third quarter. Remember: the Wildcats are playing without quarterback Skylar Thompson, who is out today with an injury. Chris Klieman gets the absolute most out of his team. This is an impressive stretch for K-State after the opening week loss to Arkansas State.
