Blue Jays designate reliever Joel Carreno for assignment

To make room for the now-official blockbuster trade with the Marlins, the Blue Jays designated Joel Carreno for assignment.

The Blue Jays have designated relief pitcher Joel Carreno for assignment, Shi Davidi of SportsNet reported Monday.

With the official announcement of the 12-player megadeal between the Blue Jays and Marlins, the Blue Jays needed to clear a 40-man roster spot. Carreno, 25, was the casualty. The righty threw 22 innings for the Blue Jays this past season with a 6.14 ERA thanks to 14 walks and seven home runs allowed. In 37 2/3 career major league innings, Carreno owns a 4.06 ERA and a 1.67 K/BB.
