  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Clear path to second-base job

Wetherholt has a clear path to the Cardinals' second-base job following the trade of Brendan Donovan, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Wetherholt had been slated to compete for the Cardinals' third-base job after they traded Nolan Arenado, but the top prospect should now focus mostly on second base. The 23-year-old will need to perform well during spring training, but the Cardinals have been signaling their intention to carry Wetherholt on their Opening Day roster. Wetherholt put together a .306/.421/.510 batting line with 17 home runs, 23 stolen bases and a 72:73 BB:K over 109 games between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis in 2025.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: 'Every opportunity' to make roster

The Cardinals plan to give Wetherholt "every opportunity" to make the Opening Day roster, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Manager Oliver Marmol confirmed as much over the weekend at the team's Winter Warm-Up fan event, saying Wetherholt "definitely has a chance" to make the team. What position he might play is not yet locked down. The Cardinals opened up third base by trading Nolan Arenado, and Wetherholt is currently set to compete for playing time there with Nolan Gorman and Thomas Saggese. However, if St. Louis winds up trading Brendan Donovan, Wetherholt would then likely focus on winning the second-base job. The Cardinals' top prospect and one of the better hitting prospects in all of baseball, Wetherholt slashed .306/.421/.510 with 17 home runs, 23 stolen bases and a 72:73 BB:K over 109 games between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis in 2025.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Returning to action Wednesday

Wetherholt will return to the lineup at Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday after missing five games with general soreness, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Woo writes that Wetherholt has been dealing with a "non-baseball ailment" but will be back in action at designated hitter Wednesday before returning to the field later this week. Wetherholt is slashing .309/.423/.519 with 16 home runs, 21 stolen bases and a 67:66 K:BB over 100 games this season between Double-A Springfield and Memphis. The top prospect is not expected to be promoted to the majors this month.
