Diamondbacks' Josh Naylor: Hits in three straight
Naylor went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Cubs.
Naylor hit safely for a third straight game to begin the regular season, but his most memorable play Saturday was getting thrown out at third base for the final out of the fourth inning. He'd doubled to lead off the bottom of the frame and eventually was thrown out by Pete Crow-Armstrong, as he tried to tag up. It was the first of two baserunning blunders by the Diamondbacks. Naylor later singled in the ninth and trotted in on Eugenio Suarez's home run.

Diamondbacks' Justin Martinez: Makes season debut
Martinez pitched a scoreless ninth inning in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Cubs.
Martinez made his season debut, entering the top of the ninth inning with Arizona down 4-1. None of the four batted balls left the infield, and only a fielding error by Martinez extended what could have been a 1-2-3 frame. The right-hander, who inked a five-year extension late in spring training, is expected to pitch in late-game situations, including save opportunities, along with A.J. Puk, who has yet to make his season debut.

Diamondbacks' Garrett Hampson: Ignominious Arizona debut
Hampson entered as a pinch runner and was responsible for the final out of the game on the basepaths in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Cubs.
Hampson prevailed over Ildemaro Vargas for the final roster spot partially due to his speed. Unfortunately for Hampson, who made his regular-season debut for his new team, an over-aggressive play on the basepaths led to the game-ending out. Hampson, who entered the bottom of the ninth as a pinch runner, took a wide turn at third base on Corbin Carroll's slow chopper to short. Chicago shortstop Dansby Swanson, knowing he wasn't going to get the speedy Carroll, faked to first and caught Hampson too far off the bag to get back in time. Not the best way to introduce yourself to a new city.

Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Continues scorching start to season
Suarez went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk Saturday in a 4-3 loss to the Cubs.
Suarez set off an Arizona rally in the ninth inning with a two-run blast off Cubs closer Ryan Pressly. The veteran third baseman has now homered in each of Arizona's first three games of the campaign, belting four long balls and racking up seven RBI in that span. Suarez's red-hot start is a stark contrast to his early-season struggles last year -- he had just six homers and a .196 batting average through the end of June in his first campaign with the Diamondbacks in 2024.

Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Takes loss despite quality start
Pfaadt (0-1) took the loss against the Cubs on Saturday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five batters over six innings.
Pfaadt held Chicago scoreless for three frames before giving up a run in the fourth inning. The Cubs tagged him for two more runs on a Kyle Tucker homer in the fifth, and Arizona was never able to catch up. Pfaadt was pretty efficient in completing six frames on 78 pitches, and he gave his fantasy managers a boost with a quality start despite the loss. His second start of the campaign is expected to come against Washington next week.

Diamondbacks' Rene Pinto: Outrighted to Triple-A
Pinto cleared waivers Saturday and was sent outright to Triple-A Reno, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Pinto lost the spring battle against Jose Herrera for the backup catcher spot and was dropped from Arizona's 40-man roster Wednesday. Now that he's cleared waivers, Pinto will likely assume the starting catcher role at Reno and would presumably be selected to the active roster if Herrera or Gabriel Moreno were to miss time.

Diamondbacks' Adrian Del Castillo: Placed on IL
Del Castillo (shoulder) was placed on Triple-A Reno's 7-day injured list Saturday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Del Castillo was diagnosed with a right shoulder strain, and he's expected to be out of action for at least a month, per Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Del Castillo was unable to crack the Diamondbacks' Opening Day roster after losing to Jose Herrera for backup duties behind Gabriel Moreno during spring training.

Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Sitting versus LHP
Smith isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game versus the Cubs.
Left-hander Shota Imanaga will toe the slab to begin Saturday's contest, so Smith and his career .600 OPS against lefties will remain on the bench. Randal Grichuk will serve as Arizona's designated hitter instead and bat fourth.

Diamondbacks' Alek Thomas: Three hits in season debut
Thomas went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and one run scored in Friday's 8-1 win over the Cubs.
Thomas, who was on the bench against a lefty Thursday, was in the lineup Friday against a right-hander. Jake McCarthy started in center field Thursday, but the situation will not be a strict platoon since both are lefty batters. One thing for certain is Thomas' poor track record against southpaws.

Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Makes first start
Smith started at designated hitter and batted fifth in Friday's 8-1 win over the Cubs, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, one RBI and two runs scored.
Smith was on the bench for Thursday's season opener against a lefty but made his first start Friday with a righty on the mound. The lefty hitter is coming off an encouraging season in which he achieved career highs in slugging, hard-hit and barrel rates. Smith will be given the chance to hold down the strong side of a platoon at DH, while Randal Grichuk should be in the lineup against lefties.

Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Moves up order
Carroll batted leadoff and went 0-for-4 in Friday's 8-1 win over the Cubs.
Carroll was moved to leadoff against a righty after batting second against lefty Justin Steele on Thursday. Carroll and Ketel Marte -- who batted leadoff Thursday -- are expected to serve at the top of the order for Arizona. Through two games, Carroll is 1-for-7 with a double, a walk and one strikeout.

Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Drops to second against righty
Marte batted second and went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored in Friday's 8-1 win over the Cubs.
Marte, who logged a second straight two-hit game to start the season, was dropped from leadoff Thursday to second in the order, as he and Corbin Carroll switched places against right-hander Jameson Taillon. Marte is expected to lead off against lefties, as was the case Thursday, and he is 4-for-10 with two doubles and three runs scored to begin the new season.

Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Powers rout with two homers
Suarez went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in Friday's 8-1 win over the Cubs.
Both long balls came off Jameson Taillon, as Suarez belted a two-run homer to left-center field in the second inning and then did it again to almost the exact same spot in the fourth, with the total distance of the blasts coming in at 854 feet. Suarez has gone yard three times in Arizona's first two games, giving him an early jump on putting together his sixth career 30-homer campaign.

Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly: Picks up win despite shaky control
Kelly (1-0) recorded the win in Friday's 8-1 rout of the Cubs, allowing one run on three hits and four walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out one.
It was far from a dominant outing for the 36-year-old righty to kick off the season, but Kelly minimized the damage from his free passes and got more than enough offensive support. He left the mound after 85 pitches (51 strikes). Kelly will likely need to be sharper in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come on the road next week against the Yankees.

Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Inks five-year extension
Pfaadt signed a five-year, $45 million contract extension with the Diamondbacks on Friday that includes a club option for 2031 and a mutual option for 2032, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.
Pfaadt's extension won't kick in until 2026, but it will buy out all three of his arbitration years and possibly his first three years of free agency if all options are exercised. The 26-year-old finished last season with a 4.71 ERA and 1.24 WHIP alongside a 185:42 K:BB in 181.2 innings (32 starts); however, his 3.60 FIP is much more indicative of how well he performed on the mound. His first start of the new year is slated to come Saturday versus the Cubs, against whom he allowed two earned runs over 14 innings with a 13:1 K:BB in two appearances last season.

Diamondbacks' Alek Thomas: Draws start Friday
Thomas is starting in center field and batting seventh in Friday's contest against the Cubs.
Thomas was on the bench in favor of Jake McCarthy for Thursday's opener versus lefty Justin Steele, but he'll get the call against right-hander Jameson Taillon on Friday as the Diamondbacks look to even the series. There will be some instances when both McCarthy and Thomas are in the lineup, with Lourdes Gurriel a candidate to shift to designated hitter those days.
