Player Outlook
Hunter Goodman was picked up across a number of leagues amidst stretches of semi-regular playing time in Colorado, but his batting average ultimately settled at just .190. He hit .160/.189/.270 away from Coors Field. After being drafted in the fourth round in 2021, Goodman shot through the farm system, taking advantage of the favorable hitting conditions throughout the Rockies organization. That success has not yet translated to the highest level. Even with 14 home runs in 93 MLB games to date, Goodman has a career 59 wRC+ as he enters his age-25 season. The selling point here is catcher eligibility (23 appearances in 2024), but there is no track record in the majors to stand on. It's possible Goodman is not even on the big-league roster to begin the season given that he has multiple minor-league options remaining and no clear defensive home between catcher, outfield and first base.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Accounts for team's only run

Goodman went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a double in Wednesday's loss to the Phillies. Goodman collected half of Colorado's four hits in the contest, including both of the team's extra-base knocks. He also prevented the Rockies from being shut out with his seventh-inning solo shot off Phillies ace Zack Wheeler. Goodman started at catcher for the fourth time this season, and he has also logged one start at DH. The Rockies appear determined to get his bat into the lineup on a near-everyday basis, as he's slashing .386/.400/.842 with two homers, three doubles, three RBI and three runs through 20 plate appearances.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Consecutive starts behind plate

Goodman went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored Saturday against the Rays. Goodman played his way onto the Colorado roster during spring training, though it appears he also wrestled the starting catcher role away from Jacob Stallings. Goodman has started each of the Rockies' first two games, hitting sixth both times. He's gone 3-for-8 with a pair of doubles.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Draws Opening Day start

Goodman is starting at catcher and batting sixth in Friday's opener against the Rays. Goodman had a fantastic Cactus League, finishing with a 1.322 OPS, three home runs and a 4:4 K:BB, and the Rockies are rewarding him with a start behind the plate over Jacob Stallings. The two catchers will likely split reps at catcher fairly evenly, but Goodman could see some action elsewhere on the diamond as well, and his fantasy ceiling is much higher.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Inside track for roster spot

Goodman has moved ahead of Drew Romo for a roster spot to begin the regular season, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Goodman began spring training competing for a roster spot and was reportedly only in line to play a few times per week behind the plate. However, Harding relays that Goodman has focused on his defense and improved with the help of veteran Jacob Stallings, particularly in his game calling and framing. Goodman has also gone 7-for-19 at the plate in Cactus League action, including three extra-base hits, which helps his case for an expanded role.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: On bench again Wednesday

Goodman is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals. Goodman had appeared to take control of the Rockies' No. 1 catcher job after producing an .861 OPS through the first three weeks of September, but he'll end up hitting the bench for a second straight game Wednesday. Jacob Stallings will receive another start behind the plate with Goodman out of the lineup.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Not in lineup

Goodman isn't in the Rockies' lineup Saturday against the Dodgers. Goodman went 0-for-4 with an RBI and two strikeouts during Friday's series opener. He'll now get a chance to rest Saturday while Jacob Stallings starts behind the plate and bats ninth.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Homers in consecutive games

Goodman went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 8-2 win over the Diamondbacks. Goodman's power surge continues -- he's homered in back-to-back games and has swatted five long balls over his last seven contests. He's also gone 7-for-24 (.292) in that span, a significant improvement over his .192 batting average for the year. Goodman is up to 13 homers, 34 RBI, 23 runs scored and a .663 OPS through 206 plate appearances.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Career-high seven RBI in win

Goodman went 3-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBI in Friday's 9-5 win over the Cubs. The 24-year-old took Javier Assad deep in the second inning for a two-run blast before breaking open a 5-5 tie with a grand slam off Nate Pearson in the eighth. Per Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com, Goodman is the second-youngest player in Rockies history to record seven or more RBI in a game -- Troy Tulowitzki was about a month younger in 2009 when he accomplished the feat. Goodman has been seeing consistent playing time in September, mainly behind the plate, and he's gone 7-for-25 (.280) with three of his 11 homers and eight of his 32 RBI on the season.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Retreating to bench Wednesday

Goodman is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers. Goodman will hit the bench after he started both of the previous two games at catcher, going 1-for-6 with a solo home run and a walk. Drew Romo will get a turn behind the dish Wednesday, and the Rockies also have a third catcher on the 28-man active roster in Jacob Stallings. With that in mind, the Rockies could treat the catcher spot as a three-man committee rather than relying heavily on Goodman down the stretch.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Another start at catcher

Goodman will start at catcher and bat eighth in Tuesday's game against the Tigers. It's his second straight start at catcher and his third start at the position over the last five contests. Seemingly, the Rockies want to find out if Goodman -- who has primarily been an outfielder during his time in the majors -- can be a legitimate option at catcher moving forward.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Back with big club

The Rockies recalled Goodman from Triple-A Albuquerque prior to Sunday's 6-1 loss to the Orioles. He came off the bench and struck out in his lone pinch-hit appearance. While he's up with the big club, Goodman will provide the Rockies with a third catcher as well as a potential platoon mate in the corner outfield or at designated hitter for left-handed-hitting regulars Nolan Jones and Charlie Blackmon. Goodman is batting just .176 with eight home runs and a 29.4 percent strikeout rate in the majors this season.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Headed back to Triple-A

The Rockies optioned Goodman to Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday. The move clears a spot on the 26-man active roster for outfielder Nolan Jones (back), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list. Goodman has been with the big club since late April, but he's seen his playing time decrease since the All-Star break. Over 169 total plate appearances in the big leagues on the season, Goodman has slashed .177/.219/.373 with eight home runs, 24 RBI and a 29 percent strikeout rate.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Moving back to bench Wednesday

Goodman is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. Goodman started each of the last four games -- two at designated hitter, two at catcher -- and went 6-for-17 with three home runs and one double, but he hasn't quite seized hold of an everyday role just yet. Jacob Stallings remains the Rockies' No. 1 catcher while Elias Diaz (calf) is on the shelf, and Charlie Blackmon and Elehuris Montero are also expected to factor into the mix at DH until Kris Bryant (oblique) returns from the injured list. Goodman may need to turn in a few more quality performances at the plate in his subsequent starts before the Rockies make him a fixture in the lineup.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Swats another homer

Goodman went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Monday in a loss to the Dodgers. Goodman made his second straight start at DH and belted a two-run blast in the ninth inning. The 24-year-old slugged two homers two days earlier while making a start at catcher. Goodman is still slashing just .195/.235/.455 of the season, but he's shown promising power with five long balls over 81 plate appearances. He'd become much more intriguing from a fantasy perspective if he logs enough games behind the plate to earn positional eligibility there.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Starting at catcher Saturday

Goodman will catch and bat eighth Saturday against Pittsburgh. Goodman will draw the start behind the plate Saturday in a role he's expected to split with Jacob Stallings for the duration of Elias Diaz's (calf) absence. Goodman is slashing .156/.206/.313 with two home runs in 68 plate appearances this season.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Sitting after three straight starts

Goodman is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds. With Kris Bryant day-to-day with a back injury, playing time has opened up of late for Goodman, but the latter hasn't been able to take advantage of the opportunity. While starting in each of the last three games, Goodman went 0-for-9 with three strikeouts and will now move to the bench for Wednesday's series finale even though Bryant remains out of the lineup.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Gaining foothold in lineup

Goodman will serve as the Rockies' designated hitter and No. 7 batter in Thursday's game against the Athletics. Goodman will make his fourth start in five games -- and his third at DH -- after going 4-for-12 with two doubles, an RBI, a run and a stolen base across his prior three contests. His inclusion in the lineup Thursday comes while the Rockies are resting four key regulars (Kris Bryant, Charlie Blackmon, Elias Diaz and Brendan Rodgers), but Goodman's recent usage suggests that he'll be a priority in the lineup over Elehuris Montero, who didn't start either of the past two days following Bryant's return from the injured list.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: First appearance as catcher

Goodman went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored Saturday against the Giants. Goodman has primarily been a bench bat for Colorado since being promoted April 24, though he made his first career start and appearance at catcher in Saturday's game. Elias Diaz (hand) remains out, which is giving Goodman the opportunity to back up Jacob Stallings. The injury to Diaz isn't projected to keep him out in the long term, so Goodman may not have enough time to gain catcher eligibility, though he would become an intriguing option behind the dish if Diaz remains sidelined longer than anticipated.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Sent to minor-league camp

The Rockies optioned Goodman to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday. The 24-year-old had a .633 OPS over 23 games in his first taste of the majors last season, and it appears he won't have a spot on the Opening Day roster this year. Goodman hit .371 with nine homers in 15 games after making his way to the Triple-A level last season, and he should receive another chance for Colorado before long if he gets off to a hot start in 2024.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Takes seat Thursday

Goodman is not in the lineup Thursday against the Dodgers. Goodman got off to a hot start when he initially joined the Rockies' major-league roster in late August, but he's gone 1-for-26 with 12 strikeouts over his last nine games. Sean Bouchard is in right field Thursday.
