  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Shoulder soreness crops up

Schmidt won't start Monday's spring game as scheduled due to shoulder soreness, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander has been having some issues in his recovery between outings, with manager Aaron Boone saying that Schmidt has not been "getting all the way back to how he normally would." According to Erik Boland of Newsday, Schmidt isn't headed for medical testing and is still expected to throw a bullpen session Monday, so it's possible he's ready to go for the start of the season.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Roughed up in spring debut

Schmidt tossed 1.2 innings in a Grapefruit League start against Baltimore on Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four batters.

Schmidt got a late start in camp due to a back injury, and Tuesday marked his first time appearing in a game this spring. He struggled from the get-go, giving up four hits -- including a Ryan Mountcastle three-run homer -- in the first inning. Schmidt was at least able to end his outing on a high note, striking out two of the three batters he faced in the second frame before being pulled. The right-hander threw 38 pitches (23 strikes) Tuesday, and he'll likely get into two more Grapefruit League games before the beginning of the regular season.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Making spring debut Tuesday

Schmidt (back) is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut Tuesday against the Orioles, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

Though he's been slowed in the spring by what has previously been referred to as a minor back issue, Schmidt has been able to move through his throwing program without any setbacks over the past few weeks and is now ready to test himself in a game setting. After Tuesday's outing, the right-hander will likely build up his pitch count over two more Grapefruit League or exhibition starts, which should put him on track to make the Opening Day roster and take the hill for his first turn through the rotation April 3 versus the Diamondbacks. Schmidt's status heading into the season has taken on greater importance over the past week with the New York rotation having lost Gerrit Cole (elbow) and Luis Gil (lat) to long-term injuries.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Lined up for April 3 season debut

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Schmidt (back) will remain at spring training when the team heads north and is slated to make his season debut April 3 against the Diamondbacks, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Schmidt has yet to pitch in a Grapefruit League game due to a back issue. While he seems to be past the injury now, the Yankees will hold him back for their sixth game of the regular season since he's behind schedule. Schmidt will throw a simulated game March 28 and is expected to have his pitch count built up to 75-to-80 before his regular-season debut.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Facing hitters this weekend

Schmidt (back) threw a "two-up" bullpen session Tuesday and expects to throw a live batting practice session by this weekend, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.

As long as Schmidt gets through his live batting practice session without any problems, he should be cleared for game action in short order, perhaps as soon as next week. The right-hander is working his way back from a minor back issue, but at this point there is no real concern about his Opening Day availability.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Slated for bullpen session Friday

Schmidt (back) will throw a bullpen session Friday and is unconcerned about his availability for Opening Day, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Schmidt has been slowed a bit early on in camp by a minor back issue, but he'll resume mound work Friday and expects to be ready to pitch in Grapefruit League games soon. Barring a setback, the right-hander should be ready to roll come Opening Day.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Battling minor back injury

Manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Schmidt is dealing with a "cranky" back, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

The skipper is not concerned, noting that Schmidt threw an "aggressive" flat-ground session Wednesday and is expected to throw off the mound Friday. It remains to be seen when Schmidt might be ready to play in a Grapefruit League contest, but at this juncture it does not appear to be an injury fantasy managers should be worried about.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Avoids arbitration with Yanks

Schmidt agreed to a one-year, $3.6 million contract with the Yankees on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Schmidt will get a $1.57 million raise after he produced a career-best 2.85 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 93 strikeouts over 85.1 innings in 16 regular-season starts with New York in 2024. The right-hander also garnered a start in Game 3 of the World Series versus the Dodgers, allowing three earned runs over 2.2 innings. Schmidt will likely enter the 2025 campaign as a back-end starter behind Gerrit Cole, Max Fried and Carlos Rodon.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Starting Game 3 of World Series

Schmidt will start Monday against the Dodgers in Game 3 of the World Series, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Schmidt has allowed four earned runs over 9.1 innings across his two postseason appearances, and he'll have the challenging task of keeping quiet a Dodgers offense that's posted an impressive .785 OPS during the playoffs. The 28-year-old righty will follow Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon in New York's World Series rotation.
