Cowboys' Jack Sanborn: Inks deal with Dallas
The Cowboys signed Sanborn to a one-year deal Wednesday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
The 24-year-old linebacker from Wisconsin will reunite with Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, who served as the Bears' head coach for most of Sanborn's three-year tenure in Chicago. Sanborn had the worst year of his career in 2024, tallying a career-low 35 total tackles, including 1.5 sacks, along with three passes defended over 17 regular-season appearances and 228 defensive snaps. Expect the fourth-year pro to compete for one of Dallas' starting inside linebacker roles throughout the summer.

Bears' Jack Sanborn: Headed for free agency
Chicago will not tender Sanborn a contract, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Sanborn's per-snap production in 2024 was actually comparable to what it was the season before, when he logged 65 tackles. However, his playing time declined last year, resulting in a relatively disappointing tackle total (35). The Bears could still re-sign him, but he might look elsewhere for a larger opportunity.

Bears' Jack Sanborn: Worst season of career
Sanborn recorded one solo tackle in the Bears' 24-22 win over the Packers on Sunday.
Sanborn had posted 64 and 65 tackles during his first two seasons in the league. In 2024, the veteran ended the season with 35 tackles (17 solo), including 1.5 sacks, and three defensed passes in 17 games. The biggest issue was that the Bears followed a trend in the league in which teams often use two linebackers on the field, instead of the traditional three or four. The defensive scheme resulted in Sanborn playing just 22 percent of the snaps. He'll be a restricted free agent this offseason.

Bears' Jack Sanborn: Notches sack
Sanborn posted two tackles (one solo), including a sack, in the Bears' 19-13 loss to the Texans on Sunday.
With the Bears often playing with two linebackers on the field, Sanborn is often the odd man out. In this game, he played just 18 percent of the snaps, and Sanborn now has just two tackles on the season. The lack of playing time makes him difficult to count on in IDP leagues.

After last year's Week 13 bye, Sanborn played fewer than 20 percent of the snaps in each contest. Prior to that time, the linebacker had a number of games in which he played elevated snaps when Chicago dealt with linebacker injuries. Since 2022, when Sanborn has been called upon to start, he has compiled high tackle totals, making him an excellent IDP in those cases. If the veteran can hold off Sewell for the starting role, Sanborn could be a sneaky IDP option.

Sanborn completed his second year with the Bears, playing in 17 games, resulting in 66 tackles, 1.0 sacks and an interception.
After the Week 13 bye, Sanborn played between 12 and 20 percent of the snaps in each game, which represented his lowest snap totals of the season. The only time the linebacker played in a full-time role was in Weeks 9 and 10, when the Bears had injuries to starters. Since 2022, when Sanborn has called upon to start, he compiles high tackle totals, making him an excellent IDP in those cases. However, he'll likely remain a rotational player as he enters the last year of his contact with Chicago in 2024.

Bears' Jack Sanborn: Posts first sack of 2023
Sanborn tallied five stops and a sack in the Bears' 31-26 loss to the Lions on Sunday.
With Tremaine Edmunds returning from a knee injury, Sanborn immediately saw a drop in his tackle totals. It's unlikely he'll put up the strong numbers he recorded in Weeks 8 to 10 unless one of the Bears' other top linebackers misses time. For now, Sanborn will be a solid floor option in IDP leagues.

Sanborn started in place of Tremaine Edmunds (knee). Going back to last year, whenever Sanborn is pressed into a starting role, he is a top IDP at linebacker. There's no word as to whether Edmunds will miss additional time, but if he does, Sanborn should be rostered in most league formats.

Sanborn saw an elevated snap count when Tremaine Edmunds (knee) left the contest early. As became evident when Chicago traded away Roquan Smith last year, if Sanborn has to step in for Edmunds for any period of time, he'll be an instant starting IDP capable of churning out double-digit tackles in any given start.

Sanborn is typically a part-time player, and this was the first game he recorded more than five tackles in a game. If his role begins to increase, his IDP value could rise quickly after we saw him post strong numbers near the end of the 2022 season.
