Nate Sudfeld: Released by Detroit
The Lions are releasing Sudfeld, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Sudfeld worked ahead of Hendon Hooker in Detroit's first two preseason games and was then rested for the final contest, but the Lions apparently prefer the second-year pro over his 30-year-old counterpart. While Sudfeld could still end up back with the team in some capacity, the willingness to make him available to other teams suggests Hooker is now the preferred backup to Jared Goff.

Lions' Nate Sudfeld: Draws another preseason start
Sudfeld completed 14 of 27 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown while also throwing an interception in Saturday's 24-23 win over Kansas City.
Sudfeld drew the start for the second straight contest at quarterback, playing 37 snaps in the victory. The 30-year-old and Hendon Hooker are vying for the top backup spot behind Jared Goff this season, and, as of right now, Sudfeld feels like he may have the slightest edge. Hooker played 40 snaps, recording 150 passing yards, 11 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown versus Kansas City. The two quarterbacks will have one more chance to prove themselves in Detroit's final preseason game Saturday at home against the Steelers.

Lions' Nate Sudfeld: Struggles in preseason start
Sudfeld completed 13 of 24 passes for 96 yards with one interception in Thursday's 14-3 preseason loss to the Giants. He added three rushing attempts for 14 yards.
Sudfeld got the start in the preseason opener but didn't lead Detroit's offense to a first down until the second quarter. Hendon Hooker subbed in after halftime but played only two drives before leaving the game due to a concussion. While Sudfeld's performance wasn't very encouraging, he appears to be the frontrunner for the second spot on Detroit's quarterback depth chart behind Jared Goff. With Hooker in concussion protocol, the Lions may add more competition to the quarterback room before their second preseason game in Kansas City next Saturday.

Lions' Nate Sudfeld: Taking part in training camp
Sudfeld (knee) participated in Wednesday's training camp session, Paul Sancya of The Herald Journal reports.
Sudfeld was photographed on the practice field Wednesday, and it looks like he's been medically cleared after having missed the entire 2023 season due to a torn ACL. He figures to spend training camp competing with second-year quarterback Hendon Hooker for the top backup gig behind Jared Goff.

Lions' Nate Sudfeld: Remains in Detroit
Sudfeld (knee) re-signed with the Lions on Wednesday.
Sudfeld missed all of last season after suffering a torn ACL in a preseason game against the Panthers. Though Jared Goff's top backup from 2023, Teddy Bridgewater, has since retired, Sudfeld may still find himself as the No. 3 option on the depth chart in 2024 behind Goff and 2023 third-round draft pick Hendon Hooker.

Lions' Nate Sudfeld: Shifts to IR
The Lions placed Sudfeld (knee) on injured reserve Tuesday.
Sudfeld suffered a torn ACL during Detroit's preseason finale, so it was already known that he would miss the entire 2023 season. The 29-year-old will turn his focus toward making a recovery for the 2024 campaign.

Lions' Nate Sudfeld: Torn ACL confirmed
Sudfeld (knee) will miss the 2023 season due to a torn ACL, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Sudfeld received a second opinion Monday, confirming the season-ending severity of the knee injury he suffered in Friday's preseason finale against the Panthers. With Sudfeld done for the year and Hendon Hooker (knee) still on the active/non-football injury list, Detroit becomes a strong candidate to add another healthy body to a quarterback room that currently only has undrafted rookie Adrian Martinez behind Jared Goff and Teddy Bridgewater

Lions' Nate Sudfeld: Injury may be serious
Coach Dan Campbell declined to confirm Monday whether Sudfeld (knee) is dealing with a torn ACL and said the quarterback will receive a second opinion, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
Sudfeld was forced to depart Friday's preseason game early, and it appears that he may be dealing with a significant knee injury. More details about Sudfeld's recovery timetable should be made available after he receives a second opinion, but with Hendon Hooker (knee) still on the active/non-football injury list, UDFA Adrian Martinez is currently the Lions' only healthy option behind Jared Goff and Teddy Bridgewater.
