Top Joseph Woll News

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Strong effort not enough in loss

Woll stopped 35 of 37 shots in Sunday's 2-0 loss to the Panthers in Game 4.

Woll was excellent between the pipes, but the Maple Leafs' offense fell flat. The 26-year-old had his best outing of the postseason Sunday, but he's still given up 13 goals on 121 shots over four appearances since Anthony Stolarz (upper body) was injured. As of Saturday, Stolarz was not yet skating, but there's two full days off between Games 4 and 5, which gives him some time to get back up to speed. If Stolarz isn't ready, Woll would take the net in that pivotal contest Wednesday.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Tending twine Sunday

Woll will guard the road goal against Florida on Sunday in Game 4, per Mark Masters of TSN.

Woll made 31 saves in Friday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Panthers in Game 3, ending his modest two-game winning streak. He has a 2-1 record with a 3.99 GAA and an .869 save percentage across three appearances this postseason. Florida has registered 3.88 goals per game this playoffs.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Gives up five in OT loss

Woll stopped 31 of 36 shots in Friday's 5-4 overtime loss against the Panthers in Game 3.

Due to the absence of Anthony Stolarz (upper body), Woll has played in Toronto's last three games, and he's given up at least three goals in each of his starts. The Maple Leafs hold a 2-1 in the series, but Woll's numbers haven't delivered much confidence. He's gone 2-1 with a 3.99 GAA and an .869 save percentage this postseason.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Expected to start Friday

Woll is slated to start on the road against Florida in Game 3 on Friday.

Woll is 2-0 with a 4.01 GAA and an .875 save percentage across two playoff appearances against the Panthers. The Maple Leafs have turned to him because Anthony Stolarz is unavailable due to an upper-body injury. Florida ranks fourth in the postseason with 3.71 goals per game.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Does enough for win Wednesday

Woll stopped 25 shots Wednesday in the Maple Leafs' 4-3 victory over the Panthers in Game 2 of their second-round series.

Making his first start of the playoffs in place of Anthony Stolarz (upper body), Woll didn't make any glaring errors and got enough offense from Toronto's skaters to get into the win column. The 26-year-old netminder has given up six goals on 48 shots since replacing Stolarz between the pipes midway through Game 1, and Woll might need to be a little bit sharper Friday when the series shifts to Florida for Game 3. The Leafs have yet to rule out Stolarz for Game 4 on Sunday, however.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Drawing start in Game 2

Woll will defend the home crease during Wednesday's Game 2 against the Panthers, David Alter of The Hockey News reports.

Woll entered Monday's Game 1 in relief after Anthony Stolarz sustained an upper-body injury. Woll guided the Maple Leafs to a win and will draw the start Wednesday since Stolarz will be unavailable. Woll has picked up wins in each of his last three outings, posting a 2.82 GAA and .912 save percentage during that time. Matt Murray will serve as the backup in Game 2.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Nabs win in relief Monday

Woll picked up the win Monday in the Maple Leafs' 5-4 victory over the Panthers in Game 1 of their second-round series. He stopped 17 of 20 shots after replacing Anthony Stolarz (upper body) midway through the second period.

Woll entered the game with Toronto ahead 4-1 for his first action this postseason, but he had to withstand a furious third-period comeback attempt from Florida before Matthew Knies potted the winner with four minutes left in regulation. Stolarz was hospitalized after the game and could be facing a lengthy absence, so the Leafs' playoff hopes may rest on Woll's shoulders from here on out. The 26-year-old netminder finished the regular season with a 27-14-1 record, 2.73 GAA and .909 save percentage in 42 outings.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Rejoins practice

Woll (illness) was back on the ice ahead of Tuesday's Game 5 matchup with Ottawa, Mark Masters of TSN reports.

Woll has yet to appear in a postseason game and is unlikely to do so Tuesday, given how well Anthony Stolarz has performed as the starter. As such, Woll figures to serve as the No. 2 option for Game 5. Still, if called upon, Woll would be a decent option, having gone 27-14-1 in 42 regular-season appearances this year with a 2.73 GAA.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Missing from practice

Woll is dealing with an illness that kept him out of Monday's practice session, Luke Fox of Sportsnet reports.

Woll has been stuck behind Anthony Stolarz during the postseason -- a situation that is unlikely to change any time soon, considering Stolarz is 3-1 in four postseason outings with a 2.29 GAA. If Woll isn't healthy enough to serve as the backup for Game 5 on Tuesday, Artur Akhtyamov could be tasked with being the No. 2 behind Stolarz.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Three wins in last four games

Woll made 31 saves in a 4-3 overtime win over Detroit on Thursday.

The Leafs tied the game late in the third with Woll pulled for the 6-on-5 advantage, and they clinched the victory 56 seconds into OT. Woll finished the regular season with three wins in his last four games, and he's 7-3-1 since the beginning of March. He'll likely be on the bench to begin Toronto's first-round series against Ottawa, but it's clear he can perform if his team needs him.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Protecting net Thursday

Woll will play in goal at home versus the Red Wings on Thursday, Terry Koshan of The Toronto Sun reports.

Woll will get the nod in the regular-season finale. He's gone just 2-2-1 with a 2.82 GAA and a .912 save percentage over his last five games. That run of play suggests Anthony Stolarz may get the first crack at the starting job during the playoffs.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Earns win Sunday

Woll stopped 25 of 26 shots in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Hurricanes.

Woll was solid between the pipes and got back to winning ways after dropping his previous start against the Panthers on April 8. Woll has made 10 appearances since the beginning of March, and while he's won six of those starts, his overall numbers aren't eye-popping by any means. He's gone 6-3-1 with a 3.01 GAA and a .906 save percentage in that span. It's unclear if he'll see action in Toronto's final two games of the regular season, but it's likely he'll start at least one of those contests.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Starting Sunday

Woll will patrol the road crease versus Carolina on Sunday, per Luke Fox of Sportsnet.

Woll will get the second half of Toronto's back-to-back after Anthony Stolarz plays in Saturday's home game versus Montreal. The 26-year-old Woll has been superb in his last two appearances, going 1-0-1 while allowing only four goals on 67 shots. He is 25-14-1 with a 2.76 GAA and a .907 save percentage in 40 appearances this season. Carolina has registered 3.22 goals per game in 2024-25, the ninth-best mark in the NHL.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Strong effort in loss

Woll made 34 saves in a 3-1 loss to Florida on Tuesday. He allowed two goals.

He played such a strong game. Woll didn't get a lot of help from his mates, and Morgan Rielly even made an uncharacteristic giveaway that gifted the Panthers their second goal. Woll allowed nine goals across two losses (0-1-1) from March 22-27, but those stinkers are bookended by five games in which he's surrendered just 10 goals and posted a 4-1-0 record. Woll and Anthony Stolarz head into toward the postseason with one of the best overall records in the NHL. We don't know which goalie will get the heavier load or if they'll continue to split games. The Leafs are in good hands either way.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Tending twine in Sunrise

Woll will protect the road crease against the Panthers on Tuesday, Luke Fox of Sportsnet reports.

Woll will make his first start since March 30, when he stopped 29 of 31 shots in a 3-2 win over Anaheim. The Missouri native had a solid 5-2-1 record over eight appearances in March, but he posted a subpar .894 save percentage and a 3.41 GAA during that time. Florida is getting a few players back from injury Tuesday, so Woll will have his hands full in this Atlantic Division matchup.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Holds on for win

Woll stopped 28 of 30 shots in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Ducks.

Woll blew a two-goal lead in this contest, but he made Steven Lorentz's tally at 11:35 of the third period stick as the game-winner for Toronto. Woll went 5-2-1 in March despite allowing three or more goals in five of his eight appearances. The 26-year-old netminder is up to 25-13-1 with a 2.78 GAA and a .906 save percentage over 39 appearances this season. He's been splitting the workload fairly evenly with Anthony Stolarz, though it's a risky matchup for either goalie when the Maple Leafs host the Panthers on Wednesday.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Expected to start against Anaheim

Woll is expected to start Sunday's road game against the Ducks, David Alter of The Hockey News reports.

Woll hasn't been very effective over his last two starts, going 0-1-1 with a 4.53 GAA and .864 save percentage during that time. He made an appearance against the Ducks at home earlier in the season, turning aside 19 of 20 shots to earn the win Dec. 12. The Ducks are averaging just 2.72 goals per game this season, which is tied for the seventh-worst mark in the league.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: In goal Thursday

Woll will protect the road goal versus the Sharks on Thursday, Max Miller of NHL.com reports.

Woll lost to the Predators in his last start, allowing four goals on 31 shots. The 26-year-old had won his previous three outings, and he'll have a good chance to get back on track Thursday. The Sharks have scored just 13 goals over their last six games, winning just two of those matchups.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Ugly outing in San Jose

Woll stopped 30 of 35 shots in Thursday's 6-5 shootout loss to the Sharks.

Both teams' top players were productive, though the Sharks' offense showed up earlier. It took a final-minute, two-goal comeback to get the game to overtime, but Woll was bested twice in the shootout to end up with the loss in the end. He is 4-2-1 with 23 goals allowed over seven contests in March, a jarring change compared to the steady play he showed between late January and the end of February. Woll is now 24-13-1 with a 2.80 GAA and a .905 save percentage over 38 appearances this season. He probably won't have to wait long for his next start, as the Maple Leafs wrap up their road trip with a back-to-back over the weekend. They visit the Kings on Saturday and the Ducks on Sunday, so Woll and Anthony Stolarz are likely to split the next two games.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Tough-luck loss to Preds

Woll made 27 saves on 31 shots in a 5-2 loss to Nashville on Saturday. The fifth goal was an empty-netter.

The Leafs got off to a hot start and went up 2-0 early, but the Predators rallied with five unanswered goals to claim the win. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Woll. Toronto remains tied with the Panthers for first place in the Atlantic Division with 87 points. Woll and Anthony Stolarz will probably continue to share time in the crease down the stretch, and Woll should be started by fantasy managers when it's his turn to play.
