Top Red Wings News

  • Red Wings' Jonatan Berggren: Lands on waivers

Berggren was placed on waivers Monday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Berggren's pending demotion to AHL Grand Rapids, assuming he clears, shouldn't come as a surprise considering he has served as a healthy scratch in nine of the Red Wings' last 10 outings. In his last 10 appearances, the winger generated two assists, 10 shots and five hits while averaging 11:52 of ice time.

  • Red Wings' Patrick Kane: Dealing with injury

Kane (upper body) will miss at least the next two games, according to Max Bultman of The Athletic on Monday.

Kane suffered the injury in Saturday's 4-0 win over Chicago. He won't play against the Islanders and Mammoth on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, and could miss additional action afterward. Kane has compiled six goals, 23 points and 70 shots on net across 24 appearances this season. After being recalled from AHL Grand Rapids on Sunday, John Leonard will replace Kane on Detroit's second line.

  • Red Wings' Erik Gustafsson: Sent back to minors

Gustafsson was assigned to AHL Grand Rapids on Sunday.

John Leonard was recalled by Detroit in a corresponding transaction. Gustafsson has gotten into just one game with the Red Wings this year. The left-shot blueliner will link back up with the Griffins, with whom he's notched one goal, 14 points and a plus-13 rating over 14 appearances in 2025-26.

  • Red Wings' John Leonard: Called up by Detroit

Leonard was recalled from AHL Grand Rapids on Sunday.

Leonard has had a stellar start to the season in the minors, as he leads the AHL with 19 goals to go with 10 assists, two PIM and a plus-14 rating. The 27-year-old hasn't appeared in an NHL game since the 2023-24 season, but he'll provide additional depth for the Red Wings after Mason Appleton (lower body) was placed on injured reserve Thursday.

  • Red Wings' Emmitt Finnie: Tallies in Saturday's win

Finnie scored a goal, blocked two shots and added two PIM in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Blackhawks.

Finnie snapped a three-game slump with his second-period tally. The 20-year-old has been back on the top line in recent weeks, which has helped to steady his offense after he slumped with a move to the bottom six. For the season, he's produced seven goals, 15 points, 59 shots on net, 59 hits, 23 blocked shots and a plus-5 rating in 33 appearances.

  • Red Wings' Patrick Kane: One of each in win

Kane scored a goal on five shots, dished an assist and went plus-3 in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Blackhawks.

Kane has three goals and six assists over seven outings in December. He earned both of his points within the first five minutes of this game, helping out on Alex DeBrincat's opening tally before adding a goal of his own. Kane is now at six goals, 23 points, 70 shots on net and a minus-2 rating through 24 contests this season. He continues to excel primarily as a playmaker on the Red Wings' second line and first power-play unit.

  • Red Wings' Alex DeBrincat: Racks up three points in win

DeBrincat scored twice on three sots, added an assist, logged two PIM, blocked two shots and went plus-3 in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Blackhawks.

DeBrincat has a pair of three-point efforts over the last three games. He's earned six goals and five assists across seven outings in December to continue being part of the engine of the Red Wings' offense. For the year, the winger is up to 18 goals, 19 helpers, 116 shots on net and a plus-4 rating through 33 appearances. He's well on his way to topping the 70-point mark for the fourth time in his career, and he could surpass his career highs of 41 goals and 78 points from the 2021-22 campaign with the Blackhawks.

  • Red Wings' John Gibson: Posts second shutout of season

Gibson recorded a 26-save shutout in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Blackhawks.

Gibson has all the momentum in the Red Wings' crease -- he's won five straight games, two via shutout. He's allowed 10 goals on 167 shots in that span. It took some time for Gibson to get on track, and he hasn't exactly faced juggernaut offenses during his heater, but the run is helping his confidence. The 32-year-old is up to 9-7-1 with a 3.13 GAA and an .890 save percentage over 18 starts this season. Gibson figures to start twice in the next week as the Red Wings have a pair of back-to-back sets coming up, beginning with a home sequence that sees them host the Islanders on Tuesday and the Mammoth on Wednesday.

  • Red Wings' Sebastian Cossa: Logs third shutout

Cossa posted a 20-save shutout in AHL Grand Rapids' 1-0 win over Rockford on Saturday.

The Griffins' offense had a rare quiet game, but Cossa made sure that wasn't a problem. He earned his third shutout of the season in the process. Playing on a strong team has seen him post a 12-1-0 record with a 1.62 GAA and a .939 save percentage through 13 contests.

  • Red Wings' John Gibson: Starting Saturday

Gibson will protect the road crease against Chicago on Saturday, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Gibson has won his last four outings while stopping 131 of the 141 shots he has faced. He has posted a record of 8-7-1 this season with one shutout, a 3.32 GAA and an .884 save percentage through 17 appearances. Chicago ranks 20th in the league with 2.94 goals per game this campaign.

  • Red Wings' Elmer Soderblom: First point since return

Soderblom notched an assist, two shots on goal and two hits in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Oilers.

Soderblom snapped a 13-game point drought with the helper. The 24-year-old also missed seven games due to an undisclosed injury during his slump, and he was a healthy scratch once in that span. He's been a bottom-six regular when healthy this season, picking up two points, 24 shots on net, 32 hits and a minus-3 rating over 19 appearances.

  • Red Wings' Simon Edvinsson: Pots lone goal in loss

Edvinsson scored a goal in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Oilers.

Edvinsson dealt with a lower-body injury that took him out of Wednesday's game versus the Flames, but he was able to avoid missing a full contest. The 22-year-old had the Red Wings' lone goal Thursday, and it was his first tally since Oct. 25 versus the Blues. For the season, the defenseman is up to four goals, 10 points, 34 shots on net, 37 hits, 58 blocked shots, 44 PIM and a plus-5 rating over 29 appearances. Edvinsson saw 21:38 of ice time Thursday, so it doesn't look like fantasy managers should be concerned about his health for now.

  • Red Wings' Cam Talbot: Falls to Oilers

Talbot gave up three goals on 28 shots in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Oilers. The fourth goal was an empty-netter.

Talbot was fine in this outing, but he still took a fifth straight loss. The 38-year-old netminder has given up 19 goals in that span. For the season, he's at a 9-5-2 record with a 3.01 GAA and an .885 save percentage over 17 appearances. Neither Talbot nor John Gibson has run away with the starting job, but Gibson has the momentum currently. The Red Wings' next game is in Chicago on Saturday, but a back-to-back next week -- at home versus the Islanders on Tuesday and against the Mammoth on Wednesday -- should allow Talbot to get another start in short order.

  • Red Wings' Cam Talbot: Tending twine in Edmonton

Talbot will start on the road versus the Oilers on Thursday, Michael Russo of The Athletic reports.

Talbot is 0-2-2 with 16 goals allowed over his last four games. That skid has allowed John Gibson to claim a larger share of playing time recently. Talbot will have a tough time ending his skid against the Oilers, who have 18 goals over their last three games.

  • Red Wings' Simon Edvinsson: Slated to play Thursday

Edvinsson (lower body) is slated to be in the lineup against Edmonton on Thursday, per Michael Russo of The Athletic.

Edvinsson exited Wednesday's 4-3 win over Calgary due to the injury, but it seems he won't miss a full game. Edvinsson has three goals, nine points, 44 PIM, 37 hits and 57 blocks in 28 outings this year.

... See More ... See Less
  • Red Wings' Travis Hamonic: Still in part-time role

Hamonic played for the first time in five games in December when he logged three hits, two blocked shots and two PIM in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Flames.

Hamonic was in the lineup a majority of the time in November, but his role has shrunk in December. The 35-year-old has been sharing one spot in the lineup with Jacob Bernard-Docker, though both could play if Simon Edvinsson (lower body) misses any time after exiting Wednesday's contest. Hamonic has just one helper and a minus-11 rating through 17 appearances, though he's added 18 PIM, 18 hits and 24 blocked shots.
