  • Penguins' Erik Karlsson: Nets goal for Tre Kronor

Karlsson scored a goal for Sweden in Saturday's 4-3 overtime loss to Finland at the 4 Nations Face-Off in Montreal.

Karlsson put Sweden up 3-2 in the second on a 3-on-2 rush. He had three shots and one block. Karlsson was one of the best Swedish players on the ice, ultimately earning the game's third star for his work.

  • Penguins' Mathias Laferriere: Involved in AHL swap

Laferriere was dealt from St. Louis to Pittsburgh on Thursday in exchange for Corey Andonovski.

Laferriere has two goals and 10 points in 33 outings with AHL Springfield in 2024-25. The 24-year-old hasn't made his NHL debut and is likely to remain in the minors for the remainder of the campaign.

  • Penguins' Sidney Crosby: Magical night in Canadian win

Crosby led Canada with three assists in a 4-3 overtime win over Sweden in the opening game of the 4 Nations Face-off on Wednesday.

It was Crosby's night. He was named the Player-of-the-Game as the crowd in the Bell Centre chanted his name. This was one of those never-forget nights for Sid -- the Habs drafted his dad in 1984 (240th), making them Crosby's favorite childhood team. His first assist was a blind backhand spin-a-rama that went cross-crease from the corner to Nathan MacKinnon early in the first frame. The second was a brilliant setup for Mark Stone, and the third was a smart drop pass from the offensive zone into the neutral zone to Mitch Marner, who entered the zone and wired a shot after Crosby was already on the bench. In his last 26 games with Team Canada, Crosby has 10 goals and 29 assists, and Canada has a plus-85 goal differential with him on the team. Pure leadership.

  • Penguins' Sidney Crosby: Playing Wednesday

Crosby confirmed he will be in the lineup against Sweden on Wednesday, Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports.

Crosby was already expected to suit up with Team Canada for Wednesday's 4 Nations Face-Off matchup with Sweden. Prior to suffering his upper-body injury with Pittsburgh, the world-class center racked up five goals and five assists in his previous eight outings and will look to bring that offensive firepower to Canada's lineup.

  • Penguins' Harrison Brunicke: Impressing in juniors

Brunicke has managed 19 points in 23 games with WHL Kamloops this season.

Brunicke was in the mix for a spot on the Penguins' roster coming out of training camp but was sent back to juniors to continue his development. The 18-year-old blueliner needs just two more points to match his total from last season (21) and has achieved those numbers in less than half as many contests. While far from a lock, Brunicke could be in contention for a roster spot heading into the 2025-26 campaign.

  • Penguins' Rutger McGroarty: Performing well in minors

McGroarty has registered six goals and 16 helpers in 39 games with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, including five points in his last 10 outings.

McGroarty struggled at the start of the 2024-25 campaign, managing just one helper in his first eight AHL contests but has seemingly found his game with the Baby Pens. With Pittsburgh likely headed for a third straight season without a postseason appearance, McGroarty could be one of a handful of youngsters to see minutes with the NHL club in the final few weeks of the year.

  • Penguins' Sidney Crosby: Available against Sweden

Crosby (upper body) will be in the lineup when Team Canada faces Sweden on Wednesday, Chris Johnston of The Athletic reports.

Crosby missed the Penguins' last two games due to his upper-body issue but appears to be ready to play again. With Team Canada, the veteran center is slated to play on the second line with Nathan MacKinnon and Mark Stone while also suiting up with the No. 1 power-play unit. Barring any sort of setback, Crosby should be available for Pittsburgh's meeting with Washington on Feb. 22.

  • Penguins' Sidney Crosby: En route to Montreal

Crosby (upper body) is traveling to Montreal and will skate Monday as part of Team Canada's ongoing evaluation for the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, Darren Dreger of TSN reports Sunday.

Canada's roster needs to be finalized by 5 p.m. EST on Monday, and according to Dreger, Team Canada's hoping Crosby has shown enough progress by then to be kept on the roster and evaluated on a game-by-game basis. The 37-year-old skated Saturday but missed Pittsburgh's last two games. Canada's first game will be against Team Sweden on Wednesday.

  • Penguins' Danton Heinen: First point since trade

Heinen notched an assist and three shots on goal in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Flyers.

Heinen ended his eight-game point drought. This was also his first helper in four appearances since the Canucks traded him to the Penguins in the Marcus Pettersson deal. Heinen is at 19 points, 55 shots on net, 57 hits, 28 blocked shots, 31 PIM and a minus-1 rating through 55 appearances this season. The 29-year-old forward is likely to continue filling a middle-six role for the Penguins, but he's unlikely to score enough to be a strong fantasy option.

  • Penguins' Matt Grzelcyk: Adds assist Saturday

Grzelcyk notched an assist in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Flyers.

Grzelcyk has six assists over his last 11 outings. The 31-year-old blueliner continues to enjoy a career year, racking up 28 points, 69 shots on net, 71 blocked shots and a minus-12 rating over 57 appearances. He should maintain a top-four role the rest of the way, though he's on a one-year contract and could end up with a smaller role if he's dealt to a contender.

  • Penguins' Erik Karlsson: Collects goal Saturday

Karlsson tallied a goal, took four shots on net and blocked three shots in Saturday's 3-2 loss to Philadelphia.

Karlsson netted Pittsburgh's second goal just over four minutes into the second period. The 34-year-old blueliner has six goals, 40 points, 143 shots on target and 73 blocks in 57 appearances this season. While his goal total is slowly rising toward his total of 11 from a year ago, Karlsson ranks 11th among defenders with 32 assists. He is set to play for Team Sweden during the 4 Nations Face-Off.

  • Penguins' Anthony Beauvillier: Nets goal Saturday

Beauvillier scored a goal, took nine shots on net and provided four hits in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Flyers.

Beauvillier's tally was the last goal scored in Saturday's contest and came just one minute after Philadelphia's Travis Konecny momentarily gave the Flyers a two-goal lead. Beauvillier's nine shots on net marked his most in a game this season, besting his previous season high of seven from Pittsburgh's season opener. Overall, the 27-year-old winger has 11 goals, 18 points, 101 shots on net and 97 hits in 56 games this season. With Evgeni Malkin (lower body), Bryan Rust (lower body) and Sidney Crosby (upper body) missing Saturday's game, Beauvillier moved up to the top line and second power-play unit. He is likely to return to a middle-six role once the Penguins are fully healthy but can still make a small impact in fantasy by putting shots on net.

  • Penguins' Vladislav Kolyachonok: Claimed off waivers

Pittsburgh claimed Kolyachonok off waivers from Utah on Sunday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Kolyachonok recorded two goals, three assists, 12 shots on net, 19 blocked shots, and 14 hits in 23 appearances with Utah during the 2024-25 season. The team planned to assign him to AHL Tucson if he cleared waivers; however, he will now have the chance to play regularly with the Penguins.

  • Penguins' Emil Bemstrom: Returns to minor-league club

Bemstrom was reassigned to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Saturday.

Bemstrom failed to record a point over two NHL outings during this stint. If the Penguins are healthier following the 4 Nations Face-Off, they likely won't need to call up Bemstrom again.

  • Penguins' Vasily Ponomarev: Sent back down

Ponomarev was reassigned to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Saturday.

Ponomarev filled the third-line center role Saturday in a 3-2 loss to the Flyers, but he didn't get on the scoresheet. The 22-year-old will resume playing regularly for the farm team, and he may not come back up after the 4 Nations Face-Off if the Penguins are healthier at forward in two weeks.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Demoted after Saturday's start

Blomqvist was reassigned to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Saturday.

Blomqvist stopped 17 of 20 shots in a 3-2 loss to the Flyers on Saturday. He'll get to play regularly in the minors during the Penguins' break for the 4 Nations Face-Off. Tristan Jarry was called up to Pittsburgh to replace him on the NHL roster, further clearing the path for AHL playing time for Blomqvist.

  • Penguins' Tristan Jarry: Rejoins big club

Jarry was called up from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Saturday.

Jarry will swap places with Joel Blomqvist at the start of the break for the 4 Nations Face-Off. It's possible the Penguins want to see if he's made any progress in getting back on track after being waived in mid-January. Jarry won't exhaust his waivers exemption even if he's up for the whole break, so he could be sent down again before play resumes Feb. 22 versus the Capitals.

  • Penguins' Bokondji Imama: Not playing Saturday

Imama (upper body) won't play against the Flyers on Saturday, Penguins play-by-play announcer Josh Getzoff reports.

Imama will miss at least one game after getting hurt in Friday's 3-2 win over the Rangers. With Imama and Bryan Rust (lower body) joining Sidney Crosby (upper body) and Evgeni Malkin (lower body) on the sidelines, Matt Nieto and Vasily Ponomarev will be in Saturday's lineup.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Guarding goal Saturday

Blomqvist will defend the road net against Philadelphia on Saturday, per Penguins play-by-play announcer Josh Getzoff.

Blomqvist will get the second half of Pittsburgh's back-to-back after Alex Nedeljkovic played in Friday's 3-2 win over the Rangers. The 23-year-old Blomqvist has a 3-7-0 record with a 3.59 GAA and an .899 save percentage in 10 NHL appearances this season. Philadelphia sits 23rd in the league with 2.79 goals per game in 2024-25.
