Is Aaron Rodgers Worth the Wait for the Steelers?

Player Outlook
The 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers will spend 2025 with the run-heavy Steelers. He is coming off a disappointing 5-12 season with the Jets and he is not worth drafting in anything other than a Superflex or two-QB league. While 2024 was a down year for Rodgers, he did average a respectable 18.4 points per game in 6-point-per-passing-TD leagues and finished as QB17 per game. Unfortunately, Rodgers did that with the second-most pass attempts in the NFL, and he won't come close to that pass volume in Pittsburgh. Rodgers can still be useful in Superflex leagues but is nothing more than a streamer in a one-QB league, although if you're into "revenge games," Steelers at Jets in Week 1 is as good as it gets for Rodgers.

  • Steelers' Aaron Rodgers: Anticipates retiring after 2025

Rodgers said Tuesday on The Pat McAfee Show he's "pretty sure" the 2025 season will be his last in the NFL, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. "I'm pretty sure this is my last season and that's why we did the one-year deal," Rodgers said, referring to the contract he inked with Pittsburgh in early June. The deal includes $10 million in guaranteed money and carries a maximum value of $19.5 million, with no cap hit lingering beyond the 2025 campaign. Rodgers, who turns 42 in December, said there's "no better way" to finish his career than with the Steelers, a team that earned a 10-7 record and a playoff berth last season with a combination of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields under center. With improved quarterback play from Rodgers and DK Metcalf as the new No. 1 wideout, Pittsburgh appears well-positioned to make some noise in the AFC North.

  • Aaron Rodgers: Informs Steelers he will sign

Rodgers informed Pittsburgh on Thursday that he plans to sign a contract with the team and attend mandatory minicamp, which kicks off June 10, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Rodgers' decision has been the largest domino waiting to fall of the Steelers' offseason, and the 41-year-old signal-caller now provides the team some much-desired clarity. With Rodgers planning to sign before the start of minicamp, the veteran will get the benefit of a mostly complete offseason to build chemistry with new top wideout DK Metcalf, and to adapt to offensive coordinator Arthur Smith's scheme. While suiting up for all 17 regular-season games with the Jets in 2024, Rodgers completed 368 of 584 pass attempts (63 percent) for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Despite looking less mobile than usual while coming off the Achilles tear that derailed his 2023 campaign, plus dealing with a lingering hamstring injury, Rodgers displayed competence under center and provides the Steelers with a substantial upgrade over Mason Rudolph. The days of Rodgers being a high-end fantasy option at quarterback seem well in the distance, but his arrival bodes well for the value of Metcalf and the rest of Pittsburgh's skill-position players, including TE Pat Freiermuth and RBs Jaylen Warren and Kaleb Johnson.

  • Aaron Rodgers: Willing to play on $10M contract

Rodgers said Thursday on the Pat McAfee Show his decision whether or not to play this season is not "about the money" and that he would "play for $10 million," Brooke Pryorand Rich Cimini of ESPN report. "I never once said I needed a multi-year deal," Rodgers said, doubling down on the notion that if he does opt to suit up in 2025, the decision will be made solely based upon team circumstance and fit. The 41-year-old QB also made clear that his "focus" currently is "and will continue to be" his personal life, noting that "retirement still could be a possibility." Rodgers has been oft linked to the Steelers since being released by the Jets, especially in the wake of the Giants signing both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, but Pittsburgh is now only one week away from heading into the 2025 NFL Draft without a clear commitment from Rodgers, which could motivate the team to make other moves at the position.

  • Aaron Rodgers: Progress with Pittsburgh

Steelers owner Art Rooney said Tuesday that things are "pointing in that direction" regarding Rodgers potentially signing with Pittsburgh, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Rooney said the Steelers will wait "a little longer" but not "forever" for Rodgers to make a decision, per Dulac. The veteran quarterback met up with new Pittsburgh wideout DK Metcalf for a throwing session over the weekend, which Rooney called a "good sign," Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports. With the Giants, who were often linked to Rodgers following his release by the Jets, having signed both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, the Steelers' ready-to-compete roster appears to be the best remaining landing spot for the 41-year-old signal-caller, if he opts to continue his NFL career.

  • Aaron Rodgers: Meets up with DK Metcalf

Rodgers and Steelers wideout DK Metcalf had a throwing session over the weekend, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. Rodgers met with the Steelers on March 21, with subsequent reports suggesting he'll either join them or retire. Their roster looks strong apart from the quarterback room, where Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson are the players currently under contract. The throwing session with Metcalf, a recent trade acquisition, may be taken as a hint that Rodgers is leaning toward signing with Pittsburgh.

  • Aaron Rodgers: Meeting with Pittsburgh

Rodgers is meeting with the Steelers on Friday, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Rodgers is present at Pittsburgh's team facilities Friday, following a recent report that the veteran quarterback is no longer considered a strong contender to join the Vikings, who remain committed to second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy. The Steelers are currently without a clear starting option under center, with the team's largest splash at the position in free agency having been the signing of career journeyman Mason Rudolph to a two-year deal. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that no agreement between Rodgers and Pittsburgh is currently imminent, but along with the Giants, the Steelers seem like one of the best remaining potential fits for the 41-year-old signal-caller.

  • Aaron Rodgers: May not be option for Vikings

The Vikings aren't expected to pursue Rodgers in free agency, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Pelissero adds that the team has rejected trade calls on J.J. McCarthy and will move forward with the 22-year-old as their starting quarterback. The Vikings plan to add a veteran signal-caller, but they're aiming lower than Rodgers, likely targeting players that will be content with a backup role. Seemingly left with the Steelers and Giants as his options, Rodgers may make a decision soon on his next NFL home.

  • Aaron Rodgers: Released by Jets

The Jets released Rodgers on Wednesday, NFL.com's Nick Shook reports. The long-expected move became official shortly after the start of the league year. Rodgers is now said to be deciding between signing with the Giants, Steelers or Vikings, although it isn't clear Minnesota has the same level of interest as the other two teams. The Jets, meanwhile are designating Rodgers as a post-June 1 cut, which means they'll carry a $21 million cap hit until that date, at which point the number drops to $14 million. They'll then take a $35 million dead-cap charge in 2026. The Jets are signing QB Justin Fields to replace Rodgers, and they also have Tyrod Taylor under contract through 2025.

  • Jets' Aaron Rodgers: Closing in on decision

Rodgers is expected to reach a decision Wednesday on his next team, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports. Reports suggest Rodgers is deciding between signing with the Giants and Steelers, with some chance of the Vikings getting involved. He won't necessarily sign a contract Wednesday, but the Giants apparently should become aware soon whether he'll join them or not.

  • Jets' Aaron Rodgers: Emerging as option for Pittsburgh

Rodgers has emerged as an option for the Steelers, although they're still talking with fellow quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Schefter also mentions that the Jets are interested in signing Fields as a replacement for Rodgers, who is set to become a free agent and won't stay in New York unless it's to play for the Giants. The Steelers recently agreed to trade for WR DK Metcalf, giving them a dangerous pair of downfield targets with WR George Pickens still on the roster. It'd be a good situation for Rodgers, backed by a solid defense and throwing to talented wideouts, but the fit will also depend on Pittsburgh's level of interest and willingness to give the 41-year-old a desirable contract.

  • Jets' Aaron Rodgers: Could be swayed by good situation

Rodgers recently said he's more likely to continue his football career if he can find a good team that really wants him, NFL.com's Kevin Patra reports. That's more difficult than it sounds, especially after Rodgers' unsuccessful tenure in New York. The Jets have already informed him they're "moving in a different direction", and with minimal chance of trade interest it's only a matter of time until he's released. The teams most likely to consider signing the 41-year-old QB aren't the ones generally considered to be "good," and Rodgers may end up looking at a short list of suitors even if he's flexible on his stated criteria. A couple of the teams that theoretically might have interest would probably prefer to see what happens in free agency and the NFL Draft before settling for Rodgers as their Week 1 starter in 2025.

  • Jets' Aaron Rodgers: New York officially moving on

The Jets officially informed Rodgers on Thursday that the team will be "moving in a different direction at quarterback." Rodgers' tenure in New York comes to a conclusion after two years as a starter, with his first year having been limited to a mere handful of regular-season snaps before the storied veteran suffered an Achilles tear. The Jets' decision to move on was anticipated, but making the announcement official early in the offseason could make it easier for the 41-year-old quarterback to find an alternate opportunity. Rodgers has one season remaining on the three-year contract he signed with the Jets in July 2023, which positions New York for a cap hit of $49 million in dead money if he were to be released. If he were cut with a post-June 1 designation, the team could opt to more flexibly split up his $49 million in dead money over the next two seasons. Rodgers racked up a solid 3,897 passing yards, with a 28:11 TD:INT, across 17 regular-season appearances in 2024.

  • Jets' Aaron Rodgers: QBs to Sit

Rodgers had one of his better games this season in Week 14 at Miami when he passed for 339 yards and one touchdown for 19.6 Fantasy points, and that was his only 300-yard game of the year. But he's looked awful in the past two games against the Rams and Bills, and he combined for just 15.3 Fantasy points over that span. Rodgers needs one touchdown for 500 in his Hall of Fame career, and he could reach that milestone against the Dolphins. But it's hard to expect much more from Rodgers, who has scored more than 20 Fantasy points just twice since Week 9.

  • Jets' Aaron Rodgers: Fails to throw 500th TD

Rodgers completed 12 of 18 passes for 112 yards and two interceptions in Sunday's 40-14 loss to the Bills. The Jets' first two drives both got inside Buffalo's 25-yard line, but the first ended in a turnover on downs and the second ended in a Rodgers interception. Rodgers was then sacked for a safety on the following drive as the Jets took a 12-0 deficit into the locker room. Things got even worse in the second half, as Rodgers was picked off again in the third quarter, and the Jets turned to Tyrod Taylor after taking a 33-0 deficit into the fourth quarter. Rodgers remains stuck on 499 career regular-season touchdown passes, and he'll have one last chance to throw No. 500 this season against the Dolphins in Week 18.

  • Jets' Aaron Rodgers: Fizzles out after decent start

Rodgers completed 28 of 42 passes for 256 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 19-9 loss to the Rams. He also rushed once for six yards and lost a fumble. Rodgers connected with Davante Adams for an 11-yard touchdown in the first quarter, but the Jets added only three points the rest of the way, including a missed PAT after Adams' third touchdown catch in the past two games. The veteran quarterback still has multiple touchdown passes in five of his last eight starts despite failing to do so against the Rams, but his uptick in production hasn't led to much team success, as the Jets fell to 4-11 with Sunday's loss. New York's unlikely to get back in the win column in Week 17 against the Bills.

  • Jets' Aaron Rodgers: Week 16 Streamers (QB Preview)

Rodgers tops this list for the second week in a row, and we can only hope it goes as well as last week. He's a top-12 option in Week 16 partially because of recent play and partially because of the landscape of the position this week. Rodgers is QB14 with an average of 20.5 FPPG since Davante Adams joined the team, and he's averaged 26.8 in his last two.

  • Jets' Aaron Rodgers: Three TDs in rare Jets win

Rodgers completed 16 of 30 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns in Sunday's 32-25 win over the Jaguars. He also rushed five times for 45 yards and threw a two-point conversion. Rodgers posted his third-highest passing yardage total of the campaign while setting a new season high in rushing yards in this throwback performance. He answered an opening-drive Jaguars touchdown with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson, but the veteran quarterback finished the first half with just three completions and 55 passing yards. Rodgers bounced back in the third quarter with a go-ahead one-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams, whom Rodgers connected with for a 43-yard gain earlier on the drive. After the Jets fell behind 22-17 in the fourth quarter, Rodgers found Adams for a 71-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion to take a three-point lead with 3:24 remaining, then linked up with Adams for a 41-yard gain to set up Breece Hall's game-winning touchdown run. Adams accounted for 198 of Rodgers' 289 passing yards, and their chemistry will be tough for the Rams to stop in Week 16.

  • Jets' Aaron Rodgers: Sleeper QBs

Rodgers will be more of an option in Superflex and two-quarterback leagues in Week 15, but he does have the chance to play well against the Jaguars, who are No. 1 in most Fantasy points allowed to opposing quarterbacks. For the season, eight quarterbacks have scored at least 20 Fantasy points against Jacksonville, and the Jaguars allow 24.7 Fantasy points per game to the position. Rodgers has scored at least 18 Fantasy points in three games in a row and five of his past six outings, so hopefully he does well once again in Week 15.

  • Jets' Aaron Rodgers: Season-high 339 yards in OT loss

Rodgers completed 27 of 39 passes for 339 yards and one touchdown in Sunday's 32-26 overtime loss to the Dolphins. Rodgers not only surpassed 200 passing yards for the first time since Week 9, but he exceeded 300 for the first time as a member of the Jets. He found Garrett Wilson for a 35-yard gain to convert on fourth down in the second quarter, setting up Isaiah Davis' 17-yard touchdown run on the next play. Rodgers connected with Wilson again for a 42-yard pickup in the third quarter to set up Rodgers' only touchdown pass of the afternoon -- a three-yarder to Davante Adams. All told, Wilson and Adams combined for 223 of Rodgers' 339 passing yards, but the Jets never got a chance to possess the ball in overtime as Miami drove down the field to drop New York's record to 3-10. Barring an announcement to the contrary from the team, Rodgers will remain the starter in Week 15, when the Jets face the 3-10 Jaguars in a game with significant implications for the 2025 NFL Draft order.

  • Jets' Aaron Rodgers: Hoping to finish season

Not only are the Jets starting Rodgers this week against Miami, but they hope that he can play the rest of the season, Jay Glazer reported on Fox NFL Sunday. Glazer emphasized how much Rodgers was playing through injuries earlier in the season, including a Week 2 Grade 2 hamstring tear. This shoots down earlier speculation that the Jets might turn to Tyrod Taylor, at least for now -- each week's results can potentially change an organization's mindset.
