  • Avalanche's Cooper Gay: Inks entry-level contract

Gay signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Avalanche on Wednesday. The deal will start in 2025-26.

Gay scored 19 goals and 30 points as a junior with the University of St. Thomas in 2024-25. He has size at 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, but he shouldn't be expected to make the Avalanche's Opening Night roster next year. It's more likely that he'll get a chance to show what he can do with AHL Colorado before the Avalanche consider utilizing him at the top level.

  • Avalanche's Isak Posch: Signs entry-level deal

Posch inked a two-year, entry-level contract with the Avalanche on Wednesday. His contract will begin in 2025-26.

Posch had a 2.40 GAA and a .923 save percentage in 22 appearances as a sophomore with St. Cloud State in 2024-25. Although the 23-year-old excelled in college, he should be expected to open next season in the minors, especially with goaltenders Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood already signed for 2025-26.

  • Avalanche's Brock Nelson: Nabs power-play helper

Nelson logged a power-play assist in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Red Wings.

Nelson has three goals and three assists over his last five contests. The 33-year-old has been fairly steady in a second-line role since joining the Avalanche in a trade from the Islanders. For the season, the center is up to 23 goals, 27 helpers, 175 shots on net and a plus-7 rating over 70 appearances. He's reached the 50-point mark four years in a row and a total of six times in his career.

  • Avalanche's Jonathan Drouin: Two more assists in win

Drouin logged two assists, two shots on goal and a plus-2 rating in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Red Wings.

Drouin set up a Valeri Nichushkin goal in the first period and a Nathan MacKinnon power-play tally in the third. This was Drouin's third multi-point effort in the last five games, a span in which he has a goal and six assists. He's played on the top line in the last two contests, so more opportunity should lead to strong scoring numbers. The 29-year-old is at 10 goals, 25 helpers, 53 shots on net and a plus-5 rating across 39 appearances this season. This would be his best points-per-game pace (0.90) in his career.

  • Avalanche's Martin Necas: Earns two power-play helpers

Necas recorded a pair of power-play assists and two shots on goal in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Red Wings.

This was Necas' first multi-point effort since March 6. He has nine points over 10 games in that span, with seven of those points coming on the power play. The even-strength struggles have led to him switching places with Valeri Nichushkin in recent games, though Necas remains a productive player even in a second-line role. For the season, Necas is at 24 goals, 53 assists, 183 shots on net, 59 hits and a plus-8 rating over 72 outings between the Avalanche and the Hurricanes.

  • Avalanche's Logan O'Connor: Fills empty net

O'Connor scored an empty-net goal on three shots in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Red Wings.

O'Connor has been a scratch a couple of times in March as the Avalanche try to keep their depth players fresh. He sat out Saturday's game versus the Canadiens but checked back in Tuesday and delivered a goal to cut off the Red Wings' comeback attempt. O'Connor had been limited to one assist over his last nine outings. For the season, the 28-year-old has eight goals, 17 points, 77 shots on net, 60 hits, 42 blocked shots and a minus-7 rating across 70 appearances. He'll continue to see bottom-six minutes unless the Avalanche suffer a rash of injuries.

  • Avalanche's Valeri Nichushkin: Pots goal Tuesday

Nichushkin scored a goal on two shots, added two hits and went plus-2 in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Red Wings.

Nichushkin was originally credited with both of the Avalanche's first-period tallies, but the first one was later changed to Cale Makar. The 30-year-old Nichushkin still has the go-ahead goal to his name, which extended his point streak to six games (four goals, three assists). He's up to 19 tallies, 30 points, 89 shots on net, 37 hits and a plus-11 rating over 34 appearances in a top-six role.

  • Avalanche's Cale Makar: Finds twine Tuesday

Makar scored a goal on five shots and went plus-3 in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Red Wings.

Makar wasn't initially credited for the Avalanche's first goal, but it was later ruled his shot got through without hitting another Colorado player in front of the net. The quest for 30 goals remains too close to call -- Makar is up to 27 on the year, and he's scored three of them over his last five games while adding four assists in that span. For the season, he's at 82 points, 224 shots on net, 110 blocked shots and a plus-27 rating through 72 outings. He's guaranteed to finish at or above a point-per-game pace for the fifth year in a row, and his career-high 90 points from 2023-24 is still within reach.

  • Avalanche's Nathan MacKinnon: One of each in Tuesday's win

MacKinnon scored a power-play goal, dished an assist, added two PIM and went plus-2 in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Red Wings.

MacKinnon wasn't as lively as usual in this contest, but he still put up a pair of points. His goal at 8:34 of the third period was his only shot of the game. This was MacKinnon's first multi-point effort in seven contests, though he's been superb with six goals and 10 helpers over 11 outings in March. The NHL's points leader is now at 29 goals, 78 assists, 290 shots on net, 55 blocked shots and a plus-27 rating across 72 appearances.

  • Avalanche's Devon Toews: Three-point effort Tuesday

Toews scored a power-play goal on two shots, added two assists and went plus-3 in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Red Wings.

Toews ended a 12-game goal drought in the second period, and his goal stood as the game-winner. This was also his first multi-point effort since Feb. 7 versus the Oilers. The 31-year-old defenseman has eight goals, 37 points (three on the power play), 127 shots on net, 89 blocked shots and a plus-27 rating over 68 appearances. His offense has been steady lately, helping him overcome a somewhat slower first half of the campaign.

  • Avalanche's Mackenzie Blackwood: Defeats Red Wings

Blackwood stopped 21 of 23 shots in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Red Wings.

Blackwood picked up his second win in a row and his fourth in six outings in March. He's allowed 16 goals over those six games, so he hasn't been at his best. The 28-year-old netminder improved to 26-17-6 with a 2.51 GAA and a .913 save percentage over a career-high 50-appearances. Assuming he sees a decent workload down the stretch, Blackwood is positioned to have a chance at his first 30-win season. The Avalanche's next game is at home versus the Kings on Thursday.

  • Avalanche's Jacob MacDonald: Sent back down

MacDonald was reassigned to AHL Colorado on Tuesday.

MacDonald was called up earlier in the day, but he was not needed to step into the lineup against the Red Wings. The 32-year-old defenseman could be called up again if Erik Johnson (lower body) remains sidelined for Thursday's game versus the Kings.

  • Avalanche's Mackenzie Blackwood: Slated to face Detroit

Blackwood is expected to start at home against Detroit on Tuesday, per Aarif Deen of Colorado Hockey Now.

Blackwood stopped 25 of 29 shots en route to a 5-4 shootout victory over Montreal in his last start Saturday. He's 25-17-6 with a 2.52 GAA and a .913 save percentage between San Jose and Colorado in 2024-25. The Red Wings rank 21st in goals per game with 2.86.

  • Avalanche's Erik Johnson: Won't suit up against Detroit

Johnson (lower body) won't play against Detroit on Tuesday, according to Evan Rawal of the Denver Gazette.

Johnson was injured Saturday in Montreal and didn't participate in Monday's practice. While Johnson won't play Tuesday, the Avalanche will have Samuel Girard (lower body) back in the lineup. Johnson's next chance to return to game action will come Thursday against the Kings.

  • Avalanche's Samuel Girard: Good to go

Girard (lower body) will play against Detroit on Tuesday, per Conor McGahey of Altitude TV.

Girard will return to action following a two-game absence and see time on the second power-play unit. He has contributed three goals, 22 points, 83 shots on net, 94 blocked shots and 53 hits in 66 appearances this season. Girard will replace Erik Johnson (lower body) in Tuesday's lineup.

  • Avalanche's Erik Johnson: Considered day-to-day

Head coach Jared Bednar said Monday that Johnson is considered day-to-day due to a minor lower-body injury, Meghan Angley of Guerilla Sports reports.

Johnson tweaked something during Saturday's win over Montreal, and he took a maintenance day Monday. While his injury doesn't sound particularly serious, it's not yet clear whether he'll be available for Tuesday's game against the Red Wings. The 37-year-old had appeared in Colorado's last five games, and he was held without a point while recording five hits and three blocked shots.

  • Avalanche's Devon Toews: Puts up helper in Saturday's win

Toews notched an assist, three shots on goal, two blocked shots and two PIM in Saturday's 5-4 shootout win over the Canadiens.

Toews has six helpers over his last 11 outings. He doesn't have a multi-point effort in that span, but he remains a consistent contributor on the Avalanche's top pairing. For the season, he's at 34 points, 125 shots on net, 89 blocked shots and a plus-24 rating through 67 appearances.
