Avalanche's Givani Smith: Back in bigs
Smith was called up from AHL Colorado on Saturday.
Smith has played the last pair of games with the Avalanche after he was dealt with Mackenzie Blackwood from San Jose on Monday. Smith has yet to pick up a point in eight NHL games this season with Colorado and San Jose. Look for Smith to see fourth-line action alongside Ivan Ivan and Chris Wagner versus Nashville on Saturday.

Middleton was recalled from AHL Colorado on Saturday.
Middleton is without a point in four NHL games this season. The 26-year-old could join the lineup as the sixth defenseman, or could be a healthy scratch versus Nashville.

Avalanche's Givani Smith: Drops to AHL
Smith was reassigned to AHL Colorado following Thursday's game versus Utah.
Smith logged 6:30 of ice time with two hits and two PIM in Thursday's 4-1 loss. The 26-year-old cleared waivers while he was a member of the Sharks prior to getting traded to the Avalanche. He's played in two games with his new team, so he can play in a maximum of eight more -- or spend a total of 30 days on the NHL roster -- before he'd require waivers again.

Avalanche's Keaton Middleton: Sent back down
Middleton was reassigned to AHL Colorado following Thursday's game versus Utah.
It's the usual cap gymnastics for the Avalanche, so Middleton may be recalled prior to Saturday's game versus the Predators. He will continue to compete with John Ludvig for the last spot in the lineup.

Avalanche's Devon Toews: Contributes helper
Toews logged an assist and three shots on goal in Thursday's 4-1 loss to Utah.
Toews has five helpers over six games in December. He continues to offer steady but not explosive offense in a top-pairing role, and he also maintains a spot on the second power-play unit. Toews is up to 12 points, 39 shots on net, 34 blocked shots and a minus-3 rating over 27 outings this season. He's been better -- the blueliner has reached the 50-point mark in each of the last three years, but he'll have to pick up the pace to do so in 2024-25.

Avalanche's Mikko Rantanen: Nabs helper in loss
Rantanen registered an assist, four shots on goal and a minus-2 rating in Thursday's 4-1 loss to Utah.
Rantanen has three goals and five helpers during his four-game point streak, propped up by a five-point game in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. The winger helped out on Nathan MacKinnon's tally in the third period to break up Karel Vejmelka's shutout bid. Rantanen is up to 43 points (18 goals, 25 assists), 89 shots on net, 20 PIM and a plus-1 rating over 31 outings in a top-line role.

Avalanche's Nathan MacKinnon: Breaks up shutout
MacKinnon scored a goal on four shots, blocked two shots and added two PIM in Thursday's 4-1 loss to Utah.
MacKinnon has four goals and seven assists over six games in December. His third-period tally kept the Avalanche from getting shut out Thursday, but it took pulling Scott Wedgewood for an extra attacker to get the team on the board. MacKinnon is now at 11 goals, 47 points, 123 shots on net, 25 blocked shots, 20 PIM and a plus-3 rating over 31 outings this season. He'll likely remain among the league-leaders on offense all season.

Avalanche's Scott Wedgewood: Falls to Utah
Wedgewood stopped 19 of 22 shots in Thursday's 4-1 loss to Utah. The fourth goal was an empty-netter.
The Avalanche didn't get on the board until Nathan MacKinnon scored with 4:34 left in the third period while Wedgewood was pulled for an extra attacker. Colorado's rally ended with a Kevin Stenlund empty-netter 23 seconds later. Wedgewood is now 3-2-0 with nine goals allowed over five appearances since he was traded from the Predators to the Avalanche. Overall, he's at a 4-4-1 record with a 2.77 GAA and a .904 save percentage over 10 games this season. Mackenzie Blackwood was healthy enough to back up Thursday, though the Avalanche have not yet named a starting goalie for Saturday's contest versus the Predators.

Avalanche's Mackenzie Blackwood: Joins new teammates on ice
Blackwood (illness) was in attendance for Thursday's game-day skate.
Blackwood looks set to serve as the backup behind Scott Wedgewood in Thursday's matchup with Utah. Once the 28-year-old Blackwood is up to speed, he should be in line to split the workload. During his stint with San Jose, the Thunder Bay native went 6-9-3 with a 3.00 GAA and one shutout in 19 contests.

Wedgewood will patrol the home crease versus Utah on Thursday, Adrian Hernandez of Mile High Hockey reports.
Wedgewood will make his third straight start as the Avalanche return home from a five-game road trip. Wedgewood has allowed only two goals on 52 shots in wins over Pittsburgh and New Jersey, raising his record to 4-3-1 across nine appearances this season. He will face Utah, who are averaging 2.96 goals in 2024-25.

Middleton was sent down Tuesday for salary cap purposes. The defenseman has played the last three games in a row for Colorado, picking up three hits and two blocked shots while averaging 12:17 of ice time. Look for Middleton to partner with Calvin de Haan on the third unit while John Ludvig is a healthy scratch.

Ivan was sent to AHL Colorado on Tuesday, but the move was apparently just a paper transaction, as he'll rejoin the NHL club ahead of Thursday's home game against Utah. Over five appearances with the Avalanche this month, he's logged two hits, a blocked shot and a plus-2 rating while averaging 9:08 of ice time.

Nichushkin scored a goal on two shots in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Penguins.
Nichushkin has four goals and one assist during his four-game point streak. For the season, the winger has seven tallies, 11 points, 26 shots on net, eight hits and a plus-3 rating over 13 appearances. Nichushkin has fit right in on the second line, and he should be on most fantasy rosters as long as he's scoring at such an impressive rate.

Avalanche's Artturi Lehkonen: Scores again Tuesday
Lehkonen scored a goal on two shots and went plus-5 in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Penguins.
Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon each had five points, helping Lehkonen to a strong plus-minus rating despite a lack of other stats. This was Lehkonen's fifth goal and sixth point over his last seven games. The winger is up to eight tallies, five assists, 38 shots on net and a plus-5 rating through 18 appearances, and he'll carry excellent fantasy value as long as he remains on the top line.

Toews had two assists in a 6-2 win over the Penguins on Tuesday.
The offensive defender has put up 157 points in 228 games over the last three seasons. However, this year has been a slog for Toews, who has just 11 points in 26 games. It's not uncommon for players with big new contracts to struggle with the weight of performance in the first year of a new deal. But Toews has four assists in his last five games, so he may be turning a corner.

Wedgewood made 24 saves in a 6-2 win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday.
Wedgewood is now 3-1-0 in four starts with the Avs, and his 1.59 GAA and .944 save percentage across those appearances make him look like a star. Unfortunately for him, Mackenzie Blackwood's arrival via trade from San Jose might push Wedgewood into the backup role despite his recent success. Still, this team is powerful, so Wedgewood needs to be in your blue paint whenever he's in theirs.
