Top 49ers News

  • 49ers' Marques Sigle: San Fran adds speedy Round 5 safety

The 49ers selected Sigle in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 160th overall.

Sigle (5-foot-11, 199 pounds) was a backup for three years at North Dakota State before transferring to start at Kansas State in his fourth and fifth seasons. Sigle plays with a lot of motor and boasts excellent speed (4.37-second 40), so at the very least he can run and hit. What's less clear is whether Sigle has the coverage skills and wrap-up fundamentals necessary to play a starter's snap count. Although the 49ers will try to develop Sigle into a capable starter, there's a chance he more so makes a name for himself as a standout special teams player who doubles as a backup safety.

  • 49ers' Jordan James: Headed to Bay Area

The 49ers selected James in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 147th overall.

James initially saw work as a part-time contributor with the Oredon Ducks in 2023, when he racked up 107 carries for 759 yards and 11 touchdowns working in tandem with Bucky Irving, but the former took over the lead job last season and posted workhorse numbers, racking up 233 totes for 1,267 yards and 15 touchdowns to earn Second Team All-Big Ten honors. He didn't test particularly well at the combine and isn't viewed as a home-run threat, but he's quick to find the hole and get downhill. James joins a 49ers team that dealt Jordan Mason to the Vikings this offseason, leaving Christian McCaffrey and Isaac Guerendo (knee/ankle) at the top of the depth chart. Given McCaffrey's injury history, there's a non-zero chance James will see the field as a rookie if he can beat out Patrick Taylor for third-string duties.

  • 49ers' Jordan Watkins: Final pick of fourth round

The 49ers selected Watkins in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 138th overall.

Watkins was overshadowed by bigger names in the wide receiver corps at Ole Miss throughout his time in college, but he was still a significant contributor. He tied for the SEC lead in touchdown receptions with nine in 2024 and was also productive as a punt returner during his time with the Rebels. Watkins is likely to be buried on the depth chart even with the 49ers losing Deebo Samuel and potentially being without Brandon Aiyuk (knee) to begin the season, but he should have a chance to make the roster as a special-teams contributor.

  • 49ers' CJ West: More defensive line help in SF

The 49ers selected West in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 113th overall.

The 49ers have prioritized the defensive line in this draft and add another big body in West to go with Alfred Collins from the second round. West (6-foot-1, 316 pounds) has good quickness for his size and can collapse a pocket with his violent hands. Starting out at Kent State, West finished at Indiana and showed he could move up a weight class and still produce, as he was a big part of a Hoosier team that made an amazing run to the College Football Playoff.

  • 49ers' Upton Stout: Bay Area bound

The 49ers selected Stout in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 100th overall.

The 49ers needed to address secondary in this draft and Stout is an interesting play by them. The Western Kentucky product stands in at just 5-foot-8 and 181 pounds but he has 4.44 speed. He was productive with 21 pass breakups and six picks over five seasons (34 starts). Despite the size, Stout is a willing tackler who had 52 stops this past season. His 21 reps on the bench press at the combine back up that play strength. Stout has plenty of experience at nickel and that's his best path to playing time in San Francisco.

  • 49ers' Nick Martin: Niners draft undersized linebacker

The 49ers selected Martin in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 75th overall.

Martin was a highly productive starter during his third and fourth seasons at Oklahoma State, but at just 6-feet tall and 221 pounds Martin simply does not look like a linebacker. Martin does have the wheels to run like a safety (4.53-second 40-yard dash, 38-inch vertical jump), but it's not clear whether his skill set would translate there. Meanwhile, it's not clear if his lack of size will allow Martin to stick at linebacker in the NFL. If Martin can prove an exception to the rule then his skill set should shine through otherwise, because he was a big-time linebacker for Oklahoma State the last two years.

  • 49ers' Alfred Collins: Heads west to Niners in Round 2

The 49ers selected Collins in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 43rd overall.

Collins (6-foot-6, 332 pounds) is an enormous defensive tackle from Texas who boasts both extreme mass and reach (34 and 5/8-inch arms), giving him the ability to occupy blockers and disrupt passing lanes with his hands. Collins might lack the range necessary to play a three-down role, however, and he could end up a rotational run-stopping specialist instead of a true starter. Collins is unlikely to emerge as an IDP option in most formats.

  • 49ers' Mykel Williams: Niners add edge rusher 11th overall

The 49ers selected Williams in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 11th overall.

Although Williams (6-foot-5, 260 pounds) is likely capable of starting Week 1, especially for a San Francisco defensive line in the midst of a rebuild, he's still early in his development and probably has more long-term upside than his Georgia box score might lead someone to believe. Williams will turn 21 on June 29, meaning he's at least a year ahead of schedule after otherwise serving as Georgia's lead edge rusher the past three years. If Williams trends toward his higher-range outcomes, he and Nick Bosa would likely prove a dominant duo.
